The Lamp for Yama…

In India—a land of rich traditions—the month of Kartika is currently underway. This month is described in various ancient scriptures (Puranic texts). According to the Padma Purana, those who bathe regularly before sunrise during the month of Kartika and worship Lord Vishnu—offering incense and lighting lamps—become dear to Him. Another legend suggests that it was through the merit earned from bathing and worship during the month of Kartika that Satyabhama was blessed with the good fortune of becoming the wife of Lord Shri Krishna.
The grand five-day festival of Diwali is also celebrated during this month of Kartika. The festivities commence with the lighting of the ‘Lamp for Yama’ (Yam ka Deepak) and Dhanteras, which begins on the thirteenth day (Trayodashi) of the waning phase of the moon (Krishna Paksha) in the month of Kartika. A lamp is not merely a source of light; it is considered a symbol of knowledge, faith, purity, auspiciousness, and spiritual consciousness. In India, a land steeped in tradition, the act of lighting a lamp holds special significance. While a lamp dispels darkness and spreads light—inspiring humanity to move from ignorance to knowledge, despair to hope, and negativity to positivity—the ‘Lamp for Yama’ serves a dual purpose: it expresses reverence toward the deity of death, while simultaneously symbolizing a prayer for the protection and well-being of life. This is significant because, in Hinduism, Yamraj (Yama) is regarded not only as the deity of death but also as the presiding authority over Dharma (righteousness) and justice.
According to ancient scriptures, the eldest son of Lord Shiva once asked why the month of Kartika is considered the most meritorious of all months. Lord Shiva (Bhole Nath) explained that just as the Ganga is the supreme among all rivers, Kartika is the supreme among all months. He further noted that Lord Vishnu resides in water; therefore, bathing in rivers or ponds during this month invites the blessings of Lord Vishnu. It is also worth mentioning that followers of Jainism refer to the thirteenth day of the waning moon in the month of Kartika as “Dhanya Teras” or “Dhyan Teras.” It is said that on this day, Lord Mahavira entered a state of deep meditative stillness (yoga nirodha) to attain the third and fourth stages of meditation. After three days of such meditation, he attained Nirvana on the day of Diwali. Since then, this day has come to be known as ‘Dhanteras’.
Katha: –
In ancient times, there lived a king named Hem, who was blessed with a son. When the royal astrologer cast the child’s horoscope, it was revealed that the prince would die exactly four days after his wedding. Distressed by this, King Hem sent the prince to a secluded place where not even the shadow of a woman could fall.
As fate would have it, a princess happened to pass by one day. The two were instantly drawn to each other and entered into a Gandharva marriage (a union based on mutual attraction). Following the marriage, destiny took its course; four days later, the messengers of Yama (Yamadutas) arrived to claim the prince’s life. As they were taking him away, the heart-wrenching lament of his newlywed wife moved them deeply. One of the messengers asked Lord Yama, “O Lord of Death, is there no way for a human to escape an untimely death?”
In response to this plea, Lord Yama explained, “An untimely death is a consequence of one’s past actions (karma). However, there is a simple way to avoid it. If a person performs a ritual in my name on the thirteenth day of the dark fortnight (Krishna Paksha) of the month of Kartika, and places a row of lamps facing the south, they shall no longer fear an untimely death.” This is the reason why, on the evening of the thirteenth day of the dark fortnight of Kartika, people light lamps outside their homes, facing the south.
