Krishnashtami or Gokulashtami…

According to the Hindu calendar, “Janmashtami” is celebrated on the eighth day of the full moon of the month of Shravan, or the eighth day after Rakshabandhan. Lord Vishnu took numerous incarnations to establish righteousness and destroy unrighteousness in the world. One of these incarnations was in the Dwapar Yuga, when Lord Vishnu appeared as Lord Krishna. Lord Krishna was born on the eighth night of the Krishna Paksha (dark fortnight) of the month of Bhadrapada. According to scriptures, Lord Krishna was born on the eighth day of the month of Rohini, with the Moon in Taurus and the Sun in Leo. Since Lord Krishna was born under the Rohini Nakshatra, the Rohini Nakshatra is considered very important in determining Janmashtami. Therefore, this auspicious date is celebrated every year with great pomp and devotion throughout India and abroad as the birth anniversary of Lord Krishna. Lord Krishna’s entire life has been an inspiration, revealing numerous principles of life, and these invaluable principles also show direction and the path to liberation. Janmashtami is of two types: the first is called Janmashtami and the second is called Jayanti. According to the Skanda Purana, the Krishna Janmashtami fast is a very important fast. “If there is not even a single moment of Rohini in the day or night,” then this fast should be observed, especially on a night with the moon.

If there is even a single moment of Rohini Nakshatra on Janmashtami during the Krishna Paksha (dark fortnight), it should be called Jayanti and the fast should be observed. According to the Vishnu Purana, if the Ashtami of the Krishna Paksha (dark fortnight) falls in the month of Bhadrapada, along with the Rohini Nakshatra, it is called Jayanti. According to the Vasishtha Samhita, even if the conjunction of Ashtami and Rohini does not occur completely during the day and night, one should observe the fast even for a single moment during the conjunction of day and night. According to the Skanda Purana, those who observe the Janmashtami fast are blessed with Goddess Lakshmi. According to the Vishnu Purana, worshipping Krishna at midnight on the Krishnashtami in Rohini on this day absolves the sins of many births. According to the Bhrigu Samhita, Janmashtami, Rohini, and Shivratri should be observed only in the Purvavidha.

Krishna Janmashtami is also known by many other names, such as Krishnashtami, Satam Aatham, Gokulashtami, and Ashtami Rohini. According to the scriptures, Lord Krishna was born at midnight in a prison where Kansa had imprisoned his parents. Immediately after his birth, his father Vasudeva placed him in a basket and took him to the home of his friends Nanda and Yashoda. By observing the Janmashtami fast, devotees attain relief from all troubles. According to the Brahma Purana, in the Kali Yuga, on the eighth day of the dark fortnight of the Bhadrapada month, in the twenty-eighth era, Devaki’s son, Shri Krishna, was born. The night of Shri Krishna Janmashtami is also known as Mohratri. Staying awake on this night while meditating on Lord Krishna, chanting his name, or chanting mantras, liberates one from worldly attachments. Fasting on Janmashtami brings virtue. Shri Krishna’s birth anniversary brings a message of joy and well-being to the entire world. Milk and milk-based dishes are consumed on this day. Lord Krishna loved milk and butter, so sweet dishes like kheer, pedas, butter, and mishri are prepared on Janmashtami. The Janmashtami fast concludes with the consumption of Lord Krishna’s Prasad at midnight, after the birth of Lord Krishna.

During this festival, bhajans and kirtans are sung, dances, and Raas Leelas are organized. Dahi-Handi is also celebrated, in which curd, butter, and other items are placed in an earthen pot, suspended high enough to be broken. This is known as the Dahi Handi ceremony. It is said that if a devotee rocks the Lord in a cradle, all their wishes are fulfilled. In the scriptures, this fast is also called “Vratraj.” Fasting on this day brings the benefits of many fasts. Worshiping Lord Krishna on this day is believed to bestow children, longevity, and happiness and prosperity. Celebrating Shri Krishna Janmashtami can fulfill every wish. Especially, those with a weak Moon should perform special prayers on Shri Krishna Janmashtami.
