जैज़ संगीत की शुरुआत 19वीं शताब्दी के अंत और 20वीं शताब्दी के प्रारंभ में अमेरिका के न्यू ऑरलियन्स शहर में हुई थी. यह संगीत अफ्रीकी, यूरोपीय और अमेरिकी संगीत परंपराओं का मिश्रण है. जैज़ की विशेषता उसकी स्पॉन्टेनेसिटी (आकस्मिकता), तात्कालिकता और जटिलता में होती है. इस शैली ने समय के साथ कई रूप अपनाए. जिनमें – स्विंग जैज़ (Swing Jazz), बीबॉप जैज़ (Bebop Jazz), कूल जैज़ (Cool Jazz) और फ्री जैज़ (Free Jazz).
अंतर्राष्ट्रीय जैज दिवस की स्थापना वर्ष 2011 में यूनेस्को में हुई थी. इस दिवस की पहल प्रसिद्ध जैज़ पियानिस्ट हर्बी हैनकॉक ने की थी. इस दिवस का मुख्य उद्देश्य शांति, संवाद और अंतरराष्ट्रीय सहयोग को बढ़ावा देना है.
