नवरात्री के आठवें दिन साधक माँ गौरी या यूँ कहें कि महागौरी की अराधना की जाती है. दुर्गा पूजा के आठवें दिन को अष्टमी या दुर्गा अष्टमी के नाम से भी जाना जाता है. कहा जाता है कि, माँ महागौरी की शक्ति अमोघ और सद्यः फलदायिनी है, जिससे साधकों के सारे पाप नष्ट हो जाते है. माँ की उपासना से असंभव कार्य भी संभव हो जाते हैं और मनोवांछित फल प्राप्त होता है. माँ महागौरी का वर्ण पूर्णतः गौर है और इस गौरता की उपमा शंख, चन्द्र और कून्द के फूल की गयी है, साथ ही इनकी आयु आठ वर्ष बतायी गयी है. . माँ के समस्त आभूषण और वस्त्र श्वेत है. महागौरी की चार भुजाएँ हैं और इनका वाहन वृषभ है. माता के चारों हाथों में त्रिशूल और डमरू है साथ ही अभय मुद्रा या वर मुद्रा धारण करती है.
पुरानों के अनुसार, माता पर्वती ने भगवान भोलेनाथ को अपने पति के रूप में पाने के लिए कठोर तपस्या की थी, जिससे इनका शरीर काला पड़ गया था. भगवान भोले नाथ भी इनकी तपस्या से प्रसन्न होकर, जब शिव जी ने इनके शरीर को पवित्र गंगाजल से मलकर धोया तब वह विद्युत के समान अत्यन्त कांतिमान और गौर हो गया, तभी से इनका नाम गौरी पड़ा. अष्टमी के दिन महिलाएं अपने सुहाग के लिए देवी मां को चुनरी भेंट करती हैं. बताते चलें कि, स्त्री अगर माता महागौरी की पूजा भक्ति भाव के साथ करती हैं तो उनके सुहाग की रक्षा देवी स्वयं करती हैं. कुंवारी लड़की मां महागौरी की पूजा करती हैं तो उसे योग्य पति प्राप्त होता है, साथ ही जो पुरूष देवी गौरी की पूजा करते हैं उनका जीवन सुखमय हो जाता है, माता उनके पापों को जला देती हैं और अंत:करण शुद्ध हो जाता हैं, साथ ही मां अपने साधकों को अक्षय आनंद और तेज प्रदान करती हैं.

सेव्यामाना सदा भूयात सिद्धिदा सिद्धिदायिनी॥

श्वेते वृषे समरूढा श्वेताम्बराधरा शुचिः।
महागौरी शुभं दद्यान्महादेवप्रमोददा।।

पूजा के नियम: –
माँ महागौरी की उपासना करते समय पीले या लाल रंग के वस्त्र पहने और माँ को लाल-पीले, उजले व नील फूलों से चंदन, अक्षत, दूध, दही, शक्कर, फल, पंचमेवे और पंचामृत अर्पित करें. माता के समक्ष शुद्ध घी का दीपक जलाएं तथा धूप अगरबत्ती भी जलाएं और इत्र चढ़ाएं, माँ महागौरी के स्वरूप-विग्रह को अपने हृदय में अवस्थित करते हुए, उनके मन्त्रों का जाप करें. महागौरी की उपासना या दुर्गा अष्टमी करने वाले साधक को रात्री जागरण करना चाहिए.

On the eighth day of Navaratri, devotees worship Ma Gauri—or more precisely, Mahagauri. The eighth day of Durga Puja is also known as Ashtami or Durga Ashtami. It is said that the power of Ma Mahagauri is unfailing and yields immediate results, thereby destroying all the sins of her devotees. Through the worship of the Mother, even impossible tasks become possible, and one attains one’s heart’s desires. Ma Mahagauri possesses a complexion of absolute fairness; this radiance is likened to the whiteness of a conch shell, the moon, and the Kunda flower. Furthermore, she is described as being eight years of age. All of the Mother’s ornaments and garments are white. Mahagauri has four arms, and her mount is a bull (Vrishabha). In her four hands, the Ma holds a trident (Trishul) and a small drum (Damaru), while also displaying the Abhaya Mudra (gesture of fearlessness) and the Var Mudra (gesture of granting boons).
According to the Puranas, Ma Parvati undertook severe penance to attain Lord Bholenath (Lord Shiva) as her husband, a rigorous asceticism that caused her body to turn dark. Pleased by her devotion, Lord Bholenath cleansed her body by rubbing it with the sacred waters of the Ganges; upon this purification, her form became resplendent and fair—shining with the brilliance of lightning—and from that moment on, she came to be known as Gauri. On the day of Ashtami, married women offer a Chunari (sacred veil) to the Goddess to seek blessings for the longevity and well-being of their husbands. It is believed that if a woman worships Mother Mahagauri with true devotion, the Goddess herself safeguards her marital bliss. If an unmarried woman worships Ma Mahagauri, she is blessed with a worthy husband; similarly, men who worship Goddess Gauri find their lives filled with happiness. The Mother burns away their sins, purifying their inner selves, and bestows upon her devotees eternal bliss and spiritual radiance.

Rules of worship: –
While worshiping Ma Mahagauri, wear yellow or red colored clothes and offer sandalwood, Akshat, milk, curd, sugar, fruits, Panchmeva, and Panchamrit to the Mother along with red-yellow, white, and blue flowers. Light a lamp of pure ghee in front of the Mother Goddess and also burn incense sticks and offer perfume. Keep the idol of Mother Mahagauri in your heart and chant her mantras. A devotee who worships Mahagauri or does Durga Ashtami should do a night vigil.
