Vidyapati Memorial Day

The vibrant world of literature is truly unique and extraordinary. Today, we observe the memorial day of one of its brightest gems—the poet Vidyapati, whose literary work embodies love, devotion, and culture. He is also affectionately known as ‘Maithil Kokil’ (the Nightingale of Mithila).
Vidyapati was born into a Shaivite Brahmin family in the village of Bisphi (now spelled Bisphi), located in the Madhubani district of the Mithila region in northern Bihar. While serving in the courts of various kings from the Oinwar dynasty of Mithila, he composed love songs in the Sanskrit language. His verses profoundly influenced the Vaishnava saint Chaitanya Mahaprabhu, as well as many other medieval poets in Bengal.
Among Vidyapati’s significant literary contributions are ‘Kirtilata’, ‘Kirtipataka’, and ‘Padavali’. He also authored works such as ‘Vibhagsara’, ‘Purushapariksha’, and ‘Durgabhaktitarangini’. He composed hundreds of love songs centered on the romance of Radha and Krishna, alongside devotional songs dedicated to Shiva, Durga, Vishnu, and the river Ganga. His compositions—particularly those depicting Shiva and Parvati—continue to be sung to this day. His songs, rich in themes of romance (‘shringara’) and devotion (‘bhakti’), remain household favorites within the Maithili community.
On Vidyapati Memorial Day, the people of the Mithila region organize special events, including recitations of his poetry and cultural programs based on his life. This day is observed primarily in Bihar, Jharkhand, and the Mithila region of Nepal. It serves as an occasion to reflect upon his literary legacy and spiritual influence, both of which have left a profound mark on the culture and society of Mithila.
