दस महाविद्याओं में नौंवीं महाविद्या माँ मातंगी. जिन्हें संगीत, ज्ञान, और कलाओं की देवी माना जाता है साथ ही इन्हें माँ सरस्वती का तांत्रिक रूप भी कहा जाता है. मातंगी शब्द मतंग से लिया गया है. संस्कृत और पाली साहित्य में “मतंग” शब्द का अर्थ होता है मदमस्त हाथी. वहीं, रामायण काल के एक प्रसिद्ध ऋषि थे मतंग. वे शबरी के गुरु थे और उनका आश्रम ऋष्यमूक पर्वत पर था.
भगवान् भोलेनाथ का एक नाम मतंग भी है और इनकी शक्ति का नाम मातंगी है. वैसे तो मातंगी देवी तांत्रिक परंपरा की दस महाविद्याओं में से एक प्रमुख देवी हैं. मां मातंगी को अक्सर “उच्छिष्ट चांडाली” कहा जाता है. जिसका अर्थ है जूठन या बचा हुआ भोजन स्वीकार करने वाली देवी. वो उस शक्ति का प्रतिनिधित्व करती हैं जो अपवित्र कहे जाने वाले तत्वों को भी दिव्यता में बदल सकती है.
मातंगी देवी का वर्ण हरा है और चन्द्रमा को मस्तक पर धारण करती हैं. मां के तीन ओजपूर्ण नेत्र हैं. माता रत्नों से जड़े सिंहासन पर आसीन हैं. देवी मातंगी के संग तोता भी है जो वाणी और वाचन का प्रतीक माना जाता है. उनकी चार भुजा हैं जिनमें वीणा, खड़ग, और खप्पर को धारण करती हैं. वे आभूषणों से सजी होती हैं और उनके माथे पर चंद्रमा का मुकुट होता है. मातंगी ही एक ऐसी देवी है जिन्हें जूठन का भोग लगाया जाता है.
मातंगी देवी को विशेष रूप से ज्ञान, संगीत, और कला के क्षेत्रों में निपुणता प्राप्त करने के लिए पूजा जाता है. तांत्रिक साधक मातंगी देवी की पूजा करते हैं ताकि वे गूढ़ विद्या और शक्ति प्राप्त कर सकें. उनका ध्यान हरे रंग के वस्त्रों और हरे रंग की पूजा सामग्री के साथ किया जाता है. मातंगी देवी की पूजा विशेष रूप से तांत्रिक पर्वों और विद्या के विशेष अवसरों पर की जाती है.
मातंगी देवी का पूजा और साधना व्यक्ति को विद्या, वाणी, और कला में समृद्धि प्रदान करती है और साधक को दिव्य ज्ञान की प्राप्ति होती है.उनकी पूजा के समय हरे रंग का प्रयोग और हरे वस्त्र धारण करना शुभ माना जाता है.
दस महाविद्याओं में से एक तारा और मातंग देवी की आराधना बौद्ध धर्म में भी की जाती हैं. बौद्ध धर्म में मातंगी को मातागिरी कहते हैं. मातंगी देवी की उपासना से न केवल भौतिक सुखों की प्राप्ति होती है, बल्कि आध्यात्मिक उन्नति भी होती है, जिससे साधक जीवन के गूढ़ रहस्यों को समझ पाता है.

Maa Matangi is the ninth Mahavidya among the ten Mahavidyas. She is considered to be the goddess of music, knowledge, and the arts and is also called the Tantric form of Maa Saraswati. The word Matangi is derived from Matang. In Sanskrit and Pali literature, the word “Matang” means a drunken elephant. At the same time, Matang was a famous sage of the Ramayana period. He was the guru of Shabari, and his ashram was on Rishyamuk Mountain.
One of the names of Lord Bholenath is Matang, and the name of his power is Matangi. By the way, Matangi Devi is one of the main goddesses among the ten Mahavidyas of the Tantric tradition. Maa Matangi is often called “Uchchhishta Chandaali”, which means the goddess who accepts leftover food. She represents the power that can transform even the elements called impure into divinity.
Matangi Devi is of green colour and wears the moon on her forehead. The Goddess has three powerful eyes. The Goddess sits on a throne studded with gems. Goddess Matangi is accompanied by a parrot, which is considered a symbol of speech and reading. She has four arms in which she holds a Veena, a sword and a skull. She is adorned with ornaments and has a crown of the moon on her forehead. Matangi is the only Goddess who is offered leftovers.
Matangi Devi is especially worshipped to attain proficiency in the fields of knowledge, music and art. Tantric practitioners worship Matangi Devi so that they can attain esoteric knowledge and power. She is meditating upon wearing green clothes and with green worship material. Matangi Devi is especially worshipped on Tantric festivals and special occasions of knowledge. Worship and meditation of Matangi Devi provide prosperity in knowledge, speech and art to a person, and the seeker attains divine knowledge. It is considered auspicious to use green colour and wear green clothes while worshipping her.
Tara and Matang Devi, one of the ten Mahavidyas, are worshipped in Buddhism as well. Matangi is called Matagiri in Buddhism. Worship of Matangi Devi not only brings material happiness but also spiritual progress, which enables the seeker to understand the deep mysteries of life.
