विशाल नाम का एक युवक बहुत गरीब था, पर मेहनती और ईमानदार. उसे एक वृद्ध वणिक (व्यापारी) ने अपनी दुकान पर रख लिया. विशाल ने खूब मेहनत की और व्यापार के गुर सीखे. कुछ वर्षों बाद वणिक ने उसे कुछ पूंजी देकर अपना छोटा व्यवसाय शुरू करने को कहा. विशाल ने एक छोटी सी किराने की दुकान खोली. वह ग्राहकों के साथ ईमानदारी से पेश आता, सही तोलता और अच्छा सामान देता. धीरे-धीरे उसकी ख्याति फैली.
एक दिन, एक धनी व्यक्ति ने उसे बहुत बड़ा ऑर्डर दिया, लेकिन साथ ही घटिया सामान देकर अधिक मुनाफा कमाने का प्रलोभन भी दिया. विशाल ने साफ मना कर दिया. उसने कहा, “अर्थ (धन) जीवन के लिए आवश्यक है, पर उसे कमाने का तरीका भी धर्म के मार्ग पर होना चाहिए.” उसकी सत्यनिष्ठा ने धनी व्यक्ति को प्रभावित किया और वह उसका नियमित ग्राहक बन गया. धीरे-धीरे विशाल समृद्ध हो गया, पर उसकी ईमानदारी कभी नहीं डगमगाई.
अर्थ जीवन की भौतिक आवश्यकताओं (धन, संपत्ति, साधन) की पूर्ति है. पर यह धर्म के मार्ग से ही प्राप्त किया जाना चाहिए. बेईमानी से कमाया गया धन स्थायी सुख नहीं देता और अंततः दुख का कारण बनता है. (अर्थस्य पुरुषो दासः – धन मनुष्य का दास है [सही उपयोग करने पर]; स चेन्नियन्ता तदा दासः – और यदि वह नियंत्रित न हो, तो वह [मनुष्य को] दास बना देता है).

The Meaning of Artha…
A young man named Vishal was very poor, but hardworking and honest. An elderly merchant hired him to work at his shop. Vishal worked hard and learned the tricks of the trade. After a few years, the merchant gave him some capital and asked him to start his own small business. Vishal opened a small grocery store. He treated customers honestly, weighed correctly, and supplied quality goods. Gradually, his reputation spread.
One day, a wealthy man placed a large order with him, but also tempted him to make a higher profit by selling inferior goods. Vishal flatly refused. He said, “Artha (wealth) is essential for life, but the method of earning it must be along the path of righteousness.” His integrity impressed the wealthy man, and he became his regular customer. Gradually, Vishal became prosperous, but his honesty never wavered.
Artha is the fulfillment of life’s material needs (money, property, and resources). But it must be obtained only through the path of righteousness. Money earned dishonestly does not give lasting happiness and ultimately leads to unhappiness. (Arthasya purusho dasaḥ – wealth is the slave of man [when used properly]; SA chenniyanta tada dasaḥ – and if it is not controlled, it enslaves [man]).
