पूरी दुनिया में भारतीय संस्कृति सबसे अनोखी और अनुपम है. आज 26 जून है और हिंदी पंचांग के अनुसार ज्येष्ठ मास के शुक्ल पक्ष की दशमी तिथि है. इस दिन को गंगा दशमी या गंगावतरण के नाम से भी जाना जाता है. गंगा दशहरा का पर्व केवल एक धार्मिक अनुष्ठान मात्र नहीं है, बल्कि यह भारत की जीवनदायिनी नदी गंगा के प्रति कृतज्ञता प्रकट करने, पर्यावरण संरक्षण का संकल्प लेने के साथ-साथ मानवीय चेतना को शुद्ध करने का भी पावन अवसर है.
दशहरा – दशहरा शब्द दो शब्दों से मिलकर बना है. जिसमें दस और हरा है. दश को दस (संख्या) के रूप में जानते हैं और हरा का अर्थ होता है नष्ट करने वाला. पौराणिक मान्यताओं के अनुसार गंगा दशहरा के दिन गंगा नदी में पवित्र स्नान करने से मनुष्य के दस प्रकार के पाप (कायिक,वाचिक, मानसिक) नष्ट हो जाते हैं.
कथा: –
पौराणिक ग्रंथों के अनुसार, इक्ष्वाकु वंश के राजा सगर के 60,000 पुत्रों को कपिल मुनि के श्राप से मुक्ति दिलाने और उनकी आत्मा की शांति के लिए उनके वंशज राजा भगीरथ ने कठोर तपस्या की. भगीरथ की तपस्या से प्रसन्न होकर माता गंगा पृथ्वी पर आने के लिए तैयार हुईं। परन्तु, माँ गंगा का वेग इतना तीव्र था कि यदि वे सीधे पृथ्वी पर गिरतीं, तो सृष्टि का विनाश हो जाता। इस वेग को नियंत्रित करने के लिए भगीरथ ने पुन: भगवान शिव की आराधना की. भगवान शिव ने अपनी जटाओं में गंगा को धारण किया और फिर धीरे-धीरे उन्हें धरती पर प्रवाहित किया ताकि उनकी शक्ति नियंत्रित रहे.
भारतीय संस्कृति में नदियाँ केवल जल श्रोत नहीं होती है बल्कि ये संस्कृति की संवाहक भी होती है. गंगा दशहरा के दिन गंगा नदी में स्नान करने से सभी पापों का नाश होता है और मनुष्य को मोक्ष की प्राप्ति होती है. इस दिन गंगा नदी के किनारे विशेष पूजा और अनुष्ठान किए जाते हैं. गंगा जल को पवित्र माना जाता है और इसे जीवन के महत्वपूर्ण संस्कारों में प्रयोग किया जाता है.
गंगा दशहरा के दिन गंगा नदी के तट पर दीप दान किया जाता है, जिसमें दीपकों को जलाकर गंगा में प्रवाहित किया जाता है. इस दिन को दान करने का विशेष महत्त्व है और इसे अत्यंत पुण्यदायी माना जाता है. वर्तमान समय में नदी तटों पर महाआरती और दीपदान किया जाता है. इस अवसर पर लाखों श्रद्धालु नदी तटों या घाटों पर आरती व दीपदान किया जाता है. यह दृश्य अनुपम और अलौकिक होता है.
गंगा दशहरा एक ऐसा त्योहार है जो न केवल धार्मिक बल्कि सांस्कृतिक दृष्टि से भी अत्यंत महत्वपूर्ण है. यह पर्व हमें सिखाता है कि भगीरथ जैसी दृढ़ इच्छाशक्ति (भगीरथ प्रयास) से असंभव कार्य को भी संभव किया जा सकता है. यह त्योहार हमें माँ गंगा की पवित्रता और उनके महत्व को स्मरण करने का अवसर प्रदान करता है.

Dussehra – The word Dussehra is made up of two words: Das and Hara. Dash means ten (the number) and Hara means destroyer. According to mythological beliefs, taking a holy bath in the River Ganga on the day of Ganga Dussehra destroys ten types of sins (physical, verbal, and mental).
Story: –
According to mythological texts, King Bhagirathi, a descendant of King Sagar of the Ikshvaku dynasty, performed rigorous penance to free his 60,000 sons from the curse of Kapil Muni and to grant peace to their souls. Pleased with Bhagirathi’s penance, Mother Ganga agreed to descend to earth. However, Mother Ganga’s velocity was so strong that if she had fallen directly onto the earth, the universe would have been destroyed. To control this velocity, Bhagirathi again prayed to Lord Shiva. Lord Shiva held Ganga in his matted locks and then slowly released her onto the earth to control her power.
In Indian culture, rivers are not only sources of water but also carriers of culture. Bathing in the Ganga River on Ganga Dussehra is believed to cleanse all sins and grant salvation. Special prayers and rituals are performed on the banks of the Ganga River on this day. Ganga water is considered sacred and is used in important rites of passage.
On the day of Ganga Dussehra, lamps are lit and floated in the Ganges River. Donating lamps on this day holds special significance and is considered highly virtuous. A grand aarti and lamp donation are performed on the river banks. On this occasion, millions of devotees gather at the river banks or Ghats to perform aarti and lamp donation. This spectacle is unique and extraordinary.
Ganga Dussehra is a festival that holds immense significance not only from a religious but also from a cultural perspective. This festival teaches us that with a strong will like Bhagirathi’s (Bhagirathi’s efforts), even the impossible can become possible. This festival provides us with an opportunity to remember the sanctity and significance of Mother Ganga.
