National Legal Services Day

Even today in India, when individuals find themselves in a dispute, they turn to the law, seeking justice and the courts. National Legal Services Day is observed annually on November 9th. The primary objective of this day is to raise awareness about providing legal aid to the weaker and underprivileged sections of society, ensuring that they, too, are empowered to seek justice.

National Legal Services Day was initiated by the Supreme Court of India in 1995—the same year the ‘Legal Services Authorities Act, 1987’ came into effect. Its core purpose was to establish an accessible and affordable justice system for the common citizens of the country.

In India, this day is organized by the National Legal Services Authority (NALSA), which works to provide free legal services and ensure access to legal assistance. On this day, legal awareness programs, workshops, and legal aid camps are conducted to ensure that every segment of society has the opportunity to access justice.

National Legal Services Day is more than just a date on the calendar; it serves as a reminder of the commitment to guarantee every citizen the right to equality and justice. A hallmark of a robust democracy is that even the person standing at the very margins of society can have full confidence that they will receive justice.
