Uttarakhand Day

Located in the northwestern part of India, this state is renowned worldwide for its natural beauty, rich cultural heritage, and a unique history of struggle. Known to us all as Uttarakhand or ‘Devbhoomi’ (the Land of the Gods), the state celebrates ‘Uttarakhand Day’ every year on November 9th. This date marks the state’s foundation day, as it was on this day in the year 2000 that Uttarakhand (then known as Uttaranchal) was granted the status of a separate state. Carved out of Uttar Pradesh, it became the 27th state of India.

The creation of Uttarakhand is the result of decades of struggle and sacrifice. By the 1990s, the demand for a separate state had evolved into a mass movement. The movement intensified following tragic incidents such as the Rampur Tiraha episode and the Mussoorie firing incident. Subsequently, the central government enacted the ‘Uttar Pradesh Reorganisation Act, 2000,’ leading to the formation of Uttarakhand (then Uttaranchal) on November 9, 2000.

Uttarakhand is celebrated for its natural splendor, the Himalayan mountain ranges, its rivers, and its sacred religious sites. The state comprises two primary regions: Garhwal and Kumaon. It is also referred to as ‘Devbhoomi’ because it is home to many renowned religious destinations, including Haridwar, Rishikesh, Kedarnath, Badrinath, Gangotri, and Yamunotri.

Uttarakhand Day is more than just a date on the calendar; it serves as a poignant reminder of the agitators who sacrificed everything for the sake of this state. On this occasion, various cultural programs, parades, and other activities are organized, showcasing the state’s culture, traditions, and development.
