World Rhino Day

World Rhino Day is celebrated worldwide every year on September 22nd. The main purpose of this day is to raise awareness about the conservation of all five species of rhinos on Earth and to demonstrate global solidarity against the threats they face.
World Rhino Day was initiated in 2010 by the World Wildlife Fund South Africa. Subsequently, in 2011, it became a global campaign through the efforts of Lisa Jane Campbell of Zimbabwe and Rishja Kota-Larson of the United States. Currently, only five major rhino species remain, most of which are facing serious threats. According to the 2024-25 census, there are approximately 26,700 rhinos left worldwide. Of the five rhino species, four are threatened with extinction. Numerous efforts are being made by conservation organizations and government agencies to preserve these species.
Rhino horns are known to be used in traditional Asian medicine and for making decorative items, which drives indiscriminate poaching. Although the horns have no scientifically proven medicinal properties, their demand in the black market remains high. Meanwhile, due to the growing human population, urbanization, and deforestation, the natural habitats of rhinos are constantly shrinking, leading to the problem of inbreeding.
In India, unprecedented efforts are being made to conserve the one-horned rhinoceros. Rhinos are granted the highest legal protection under Schedule I of the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972. More than 90% of the country’s rhino population resides in Kaziranga National Park in Assam. Manas National Park, Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary (Assam), and Dudhwa Tiger Reserve in Uttar Pradesh are also major habitats for them.
Rhinos are not just wildlife, they are also key regulators of our ecosystems. They play a vital role in maintaining the balance of grasslands. World Rhino Day is an important occasion to unite collective efforts and raise public awareness for rhino conservation. It reminds us that we all have a duty to protect these amazing creatures and their habitats.
