World Alzheimer’s Day

Today, the world is celebrating a disease often referred to as a disease of old age. In many places, this disease is also seen as a stigma. It is a disease that causes a person’s memory, thinking, reasoning, and ultimately the ability to perform daily tasks. This is a serious neurological disease called Alzheimer’s. World Alzheimer’s Day is celebrated every year on September 21st.

Alzheimer’s is a neurodegenerative disorder that gradually destroys brain cells. It is the most common form of dementia. In this disease, two abnormal proteins—amyloid-beta plaques and tau tangles—deposit in the brain, leading to a decline in memory, thinking, behaviour, and daily activities. Simply put, Alzheimer’s damages the brain’s nerve cells and the connections between them. Due to which a person has difficulty in remembering new things, doing familiar tasks, finding the right words, understanding time and place and taking decisions.

Alzheimer’s Day was started in the year 1994. Alzheimer’s disease International declared this day on 21st September during its tenth anniversary celebrations in Edinburgh, Scotland. Alzheimer’s disease International was established in the year 1984. Its aim is to make people aware about this disease and provide information about its symptoms, effects, and ways to manage it.

With advancing age, cases of dementia are rapidly increasing. According to the World Health Organization, millions of people worldwide are affected by this disease. In India, the problem is even more complex. People here live in joint families, where families have long been the primary source of care for the elderly. However, over time, urbanization, smaller families, migration for employment, and changing lifestyles are putting increasing pressure on traditional care systems.

The biggest challenge with this disease is patient care. Over time, the impact of Alzheimer’s is not limited to the patient; the patient requires assistance with medications, meals, personal hygiene, movement, and other daily tasks.

Even in this modern and digital age, there is no cure for Alzheimer’s. However, some lifestyle changes can reduce the risk and slow the progression of symptoms. Reading, solving puzzles, or learning new languages and skills helps keep the brain functioning and healthy. Regular exercise and yoga improve blood circulation. A balanced diet, along with staying connected with family and friends, strengthens mental health.

The key message of World Alzheimer’s Day is that it is our society’s responsibility to understand, support, and provide support to those affected by Alzheimer’s and other dementias. Alzheimer’s also reminds us that the goal of modern healthcare is not just to prolong life, but also to preserve quality, dignity, and humanity.
