Silent Witness…

After the Silence

Three days later. The clashes stopped. The police erected barricades. People from both sides returned to their respective areas. The middle street remained deserted.

Shyam Lal reopened his shop. Glass was broken and goods were scattered. He tidied everything up. Abdul Rahman came in this time. He didn’t sit at another table. They sat at the same table.

Abdul Rahman said, “Shyam, forgive me, I was silent.”

Shyam Lal said, “I was silent too, I won’t be anymore.”

They hugged each other.

Firoz built a small hut in place of his shop. He started kneading clay again, but he no longer made statues. He made pots—simple, without any form. Zarina asked, “Abba, why don’t you make elephants?” Firoz said, “Son, now is not the time to make elephants. Now we just have to learn to live.”

Kailashnath told Rajiv, “You were wrong, son. But I didn’t stop you, so I’m wrong too.” Rajiv bowed his head. From the next day, the clinic was open to everyone, without any questions.

Naina was called back to school. The parents of the children who studied in her class raised their voices. Naina went and told the children, “From today, we will teach the lesson of unity, real unity.”

People started coming to Vasant’s shop again, and from both sides. Vasant didn’t put up any signs or write any slogans. He simply made tea and served everyone the same amount.

Rafiq wrote on the last page of his diary – “Sarpur was saved, but the wounds are deep. Now everyone has to decide whether they want to heal these wounds or deepen them further. The country is divided into pieces, but the people are still united, they just speak less. Perhaps one day they will speak, perhaps today itself. Because silence has cost a lot and now is the time when the people will have to get their voice back.”
