हर वर्ष जनवरी के तीसरे रविवार को वर्ल्ड रिलीजन डे है. वर्ष 2026 में यह 18 जनवरी को मनाया जा रहा है. इसका उद्देश्य विभिन्न धर्मों के बीच संवाद, सहिष्णुता और एकता को बढ़ावा देना है.
विश्व धर्म दिवस की शुरुआत वर्ष 1950 में संयुक्त राज्य अमेरिका की ‘नेशनल स्पिरिचुअल असेंबली ऑफ द बहाई’ द्वारा की गई थी. बहाई धर्म का मूल सिद्धांत है कि सभी धर्म एक ही सत्य की ओर अग्रसर हैं और समय-समय पर मानवता को मार्गदर्शन देते हैं. शुरुआत में इसे ‘विश्व शांति के माध्यम से विश्व धर्म’ के रूप में मनाया गया, जो बाद में ‘विश्व धर्म दिवस’ के रूप में वैश्विक स्तर पर लोकप्रिय हुआ.
वर्ल्ड रिलीजन डे का वैचारिक आधार ‘बहाई’ सिद्धांत है, जो मानता है कि सभी धर्मों का आध्यात्मिक स्रोत एक ही है. यह दर्शन भारतीय उपनिषदों के “एकं सद्विप्रा बहुधा वदन्ति” (सत्य एक है, विद्वान उसे अलग-अलग नामों से पुकारते हैं) के विचार से मेल खाता है. यह विचार कि ईश्वर ने समय-समय पर मानवता की जरूरतों के अनुसार अलग-अलग पैगंबरों और अवतारों के माध्यम से अपना संदेश भेजा है.
वर्तमान समय के दौर में जब वैश्विक स्तर पर धार्मिक कट्टरता और ध्रुवीकरण बढ़ रहा है, इस दिन का महत्व और भी गहरा हो जाता है. ऐसे समय में अधिकांश युद्धों और संघर्षों के मूल में धार्मिक गलतफहमियां होती हैं. यह दिन ‘संवाद’ को ‘विवाद’ का विकल्प बनाता है. यह दिन सिखाता है कि विविधता कमजोरी नहीं, बल्कि मानवता की सुंदरता है. सभी धर्मों का मूल तत्व है करुणा, अहिंसा, ईमानदारी और सेवा व सम्मान. यह दिन उन्हीं साझा मूल्यों पर ध्यान केंद्रित करता है.
इसकी सबसे बड़ी चुनौती है धर्म को राजनीति और सत्ता के हथियार के रूप में इस्तेमाल करना साथ ही सोशल मीडिया के दौर में दूसरे धर्मों के बारे में फैलने वाली गलत सूचनाएं.
वर्ल्ड रिलीजन डे हमें याद दिलाता है कि धर्म का वास्तविक अर्थ ‘जोड़ना’ है, ‘तोड़ना’ नहीं. जब हम विभिन्न धर्मों को अलग-अलग रास्तों से एक ही सत्य की ओर बढ़ते हुए देखते हैं, तब हम समझते हैं कि धर्म विभाजन नहीं, बल्कि एकता का सेतु है.

World Religion Day is observed every year on the third Sunday of January. In 2026, it will be celebrated on January 18th. Its purpose is to promote dialogue, tolerance, and unity among different religions.
World Religion Day was initiated in 1950 by the National Spiritual Assembly of the Baháʼís of the United States. The fundamental principle of the Baháʼí Faith is that all religions are progressing towards the same truth and provide guidance to humanity from time to time. Initially, it was celebrated as “World Religion through World Peace,” which later became popular globally as “World Religion Day.”
The ideological basis of World Religion Day is the Baháʼí principle, which believes that all religions have the same spiritual source. This philosophy resonates with the idea from the Indian Upanishads, “Ekam Sat Vipra Bahudha Vadanti” (Truth is one, the wise call it by different names). This idea suggests that God has sent His message through different prophets and avatars from time to time, according to the needs of humanity.
In the current era, when religious fundamentalism and polarization are increasing globally, the importance of this day becomes even more profound. At such times, religious misunderstandings are at the root of most wars and conflicts. This day makes ‘dialogue’ an alternative to ‘conflict’. This day teaches that diversity is not a weakness, but the beauty of humanity. The core elements of all religions are compassion, non-violence, honesty, service, and respect. This day focuses on these shared values.
The biggest challenge is the use of religion as a weapon of politics and power, as well as the spread of misinformation about other religions in the age of social media.
World Religion Day reminds us that the true meaning of religion is to ‘unite’, not to ‘divide’. When we see different religions moving towards the same truth through different paths, we understand that religion is not a source of division, but a bridge of unity.
