World Lake Day

Poets and filmmakers have written many songs about lakes, and some have even made films about them. The role of water resources is considered paramount in sustaining life on Earth. Along with rivers, oceans, and groundwater, lakes are among the most important and sensitive ecosystems on Earth. Lakes also play a crucial role in conserving biodiversity, mitigating floods, storing carbon, and balancing local climates. World Lake Day is celebrated every year on August 27th to conserve lakes, raise global awareness about them, and address the threats they face.
On August 27th, 1984, the first World Lake Environment Conference was held at Lake Biwa (located in Shiga Prefecture, Japan). International efforts related to the conservation of lakes paved the way for the establishment of World Lake Day. The United Nations General Assembly, through a resolution dated December 12, 2024, decided to celebrate World Lake Day annually on August 27th. It is known that the first official Lake Day was held in 2025.
The importance of lakes increases during times of water scarcity. A key feature of lakes is their ability to store water for a short period of time. By storing excess water during rains, they can mitigate the impact of floods, while also helping to maintain available water resources during droughts. They influence local temperatures and contribute to carbon storage. Lakes are complex and vibrant ecosystems, harboring fish, aquatic plants, birds, amphibians, microorganisms, and numerous other organisms. Damage to a lake not only results in the loss of a single unit of water, but also impacts the entire ecosystem, biodiversity, and associated human activities.
According to the United Nations, lakes contain approximately 90 percent of the world’s unfrozen surface freshwater. This importance is even more pronounced in a country like India, where many communities in both rural and urban areas depend on lakes or ponds for their water needs, agriculture, and livelihoods. If pollution increases or water levels steadily decline in these water sources, it directly impacts drinking water, food security, and employment.
Lakes are not just reservoirs of water, they are the living heartbeat of nature. A large portion of the Earth’s freshwater is contained in lakes, quenching the thirst of human settlements, agriculture, and wildlife. Lakes are the natural habitat of countless aquatic plants, fish, birds, and microorganisms. These water bodies help balance the local climate. By absorbing excess heat, they regulate temperatures and act as carbon sinks, helping mitigate the effects of global warming. During heavy rains, lakes absorb excess water, reducing the risk of severe flooding in downstream areas.
Currently, lakes around the world are facing severe threats due to both man-made and natural disasters. Garbage, plastic, and chemical waste from cities and industries are being dumped directly into lakes, poisoning their water. On the other hand, urbanization and the hunger for real estate are fueling construction along lake banks, steadily shrinking their surface. The mixing of sewage and fertilizers with water leads to an overabundance of nutrients, depleting the water of oxygen and killing aquatic life. Irregular rainfall, drought, and rising temperatures are rapidly depleting lake water levels, pushing many historic lakes to the brink of extinction.
From Kashmir’s Dal Lake to Odisha’s Chilika Lake and Manipur’s Loktak Lake, different lakes play distinct ecological, economic, and cultural roles. India’s biggest challenge is that lake conservation is not limited to beautification projects, the construction of concrete structures around the lake, or merely surface cleaning. Conserving a lake requires a comprehensive consideration of its entire catchment area, natural water flow, groundwater recharge, water quality, and biodiversity.
World Lake Day is truly a day dedicated to the conservation of water, life, and the future. Lakes are natural systems that simultaneously support water storage, biodiversity conservation, climate balance, livelihoods, and cultural heritage. If we do not take serious steps to conserve lakes in time, future generations will be at risk of a severe water crisis and environmental devastation.
