इस कहानी में एक पात्र है नैना. वह एक स्कूल टीचर थी. उसे बच्चे पढ़ाना पसंद था. पर अब स्कूल में भी बातें बदल गई थीं. कुछ बच्चे एक तरफ़ बैठते थे, कुछ दूसरी तरफ़. छुट्टी के समय भी वे एक-दूसरे के साथ नहीं खेलते थे.
नैना ने प्रिंसिपल से कहा, “मैम, बच्चों को एक साथ बिठाइए.”
प्रिंसिपल ने कहा, “नैना जी, अब समय बदल गया है. हमें सावधान रहना होगा.”
“सावधान? किससे?” नैना ने पूछा.
प्रिंसिपल ने कोई जवाब नहीं दिया.
एक दिन नैना ने क्लास में बच्चों से कहा कि”तुम सब भारतीय हो, एक ही देश के, याद रखना.”
एक बच्चे ने उठकर कहा, “मैम, मेरे पापा कहते हैं कि हम अलग हैं.”
नैना ने कहा, “तुम्हारे पापा गलत हैं.”
उस रात नैना को फोन आया, बच्चे के पिता का. उन्होंने शिकायत की कि नैना ने उनके बच्चे को गलत बातें सिखाईं. प्रिंसिपल ने नैना को चेतावनी देते हुए कहा कि “ऐसी बातें न करें.”
नैना ने सोचा क्या मैं चुप रहूँ? क्या मैं वही करूँ जो सब कर रहे हैं?
उसने फैसला किया नहीं -वह चुप नहीं रहेगी! पर अगले ही दिन उसे स्कूल से निकाल दिया गया. कारण – “अनुशासनहीनता.”
नैना ने स्कूल के बाहर खड़े होकर देखा, बच्चे खिड़कियों से झाँक रहे थे. उनकी आँखों में वही सवाल था जो वसंत के मन में था, जो श्यामलाल के मन में था, जो कैलाशनाथ के मन में था -हम ऐसा क्यों कर रहे हैं?

The Price of Silence
One of the characters in this story is Naina. She was a school teacher. She loved teaching children. But things had changed at school. Some children sat on one side, some on the other. Even during recess, they didn’t play with each other.
Naina said to the principal, “Ma’am, make the children sit together.”
The principal said, “Naina, times have changed. We have to be careful.”
“Be careful? From whom?” Naina asked.
The principal didn’t answer.
One day, Naina told the children in class, “You are all Indians, from the same country, remember that.”
A child stood up and said, “Ma’am, my father says we are different.”
Naina said, “Your father is wrong.”
That night, Naina received a call from the child’s father. He complained that Naina had taught his child wrong things. The principal warned Naina, “Don’t say such things.”
Naina wondered, “Should I keep quiet? Should I do what everyone else is doing?”
She decided no—she wouldn’t! But the very next day she was expelled from school. The reason—”indiscipline.”
Naina stood outside the school and watched the children peering through the windows. Their eyes held the same question that Vasant, Shyamlal, and Kailashnath had—why are we doing this?
