Sikkim Foundation Day
Sikkim Foundation Day is celebrated every year on 16 May. This day marks the anniversary of Sikkim’s accession to the Republic of India. On 16 May 1975, Sikkim officially acceded to the Indian Union as the 22nd state of India. Before this, Sikkim was an independent state with its king (Chogyal).
The history of Sikkim and the process of its merger with India is quite complex, involving many political and social changes. Sikkim Foundation Day honours this special historical event and celebrates the diverse cultures and heritages of the people of Sikkim.
