Which is also known as bone marrow. Such a soft and spongy part is present in the body’s bones in which blood is produced. The bone marrow keeps producing stem cells continuously and develops different types of cells as per the requirements of the body. Red blood cells are essential for the flow of oxygen into the body, white blood cells protect the body from infection and platelets form a blood clot to prevent bleeding from injury.
The bone marrow is a pulp-like soft tissue found in the recesses of the spongy part of all the bones, in the cavity of the long bone in the middle cavity, and in the large-sized Heversi tubules. The marrow is filled with stem cells that produce blood cells, which develop into white blood cells, red blood cells, or platelets. The bone marrow continuously produces stem cells and they develop different types of cells as per the requirement of our body. In adults, the marrow is helpful in making blood cells in large bones. It contains 4% of the total body weight, i.e. about 2.6 kg, in adults.
There are two types of marrow… yellow and red.
Yellow marrow = the base of the tissue is the tissue in which blood vessels and cells are found, which consists mostly of adiposity. In addition to fat and blood vessels in the yellow bone marrow, the reticular tissue remains in high quantity, so its color is yellow.
The base of the red marrow is the connective tissue whose structure consists of silver phloem (azerophilic) filaments and its associated bactericidal cells, and many types of hematology and their precursors, some adiposity and some lymph nodes. The red bone marrow produces red blood cells and the hemoglobin found in them. Due to the high amount of red blood cells in it, its color is red.
There are two types of stem cells in the bone marrow.
- Hemopoietic: – They make blood cells.
- Stromal: – They make fat, cartilage and bone.

अस्थि मज्जा…
अस्थिमज्जा (Bone-marrow) जिसे अस्थिमेरु भी कहा जाता है. शरीर की अस्थियों के बीच मौजूद ऐसा मुलायम और स्पंजी भाग होता है जिसमें रक्त (Blood) का निर्माण होता है. अस्थि मज्जा स्टेम सेल्स का उत्पादन लगातार करती रहती है और शरीर की आवश्यकता के अनुसार ही अलग-अलग प्रकार की सेल्स को विकसित करती है. रेड ब्लड सेल्स शरीर में ऑक्सीजन के प्रवाह के लिए जरुरी है, व्हाइट ब्लड सेल्स संक्रमण से शरीर की सुरक्षा करती है और प्लेटलेट्स चोट लगने पर होने वाले रक्तस्राव को रोकने के लिए रक्त का थक्का बनाती हैं.
अस्थिमज्जा, गूदे के समान मृदु ऊतक है जो सब अस्थियों के स्पंजी भाग के अवकाशों में, लंबी अस्थिओं की मध्यनलिका की गुहा में और बड़े आकार की हेवर्सी नलिकाओं में पाया जाता है. मज्जा रक्त कोशिकाओं का उत्पादन करने वाली स्टेम कोशिकाओं से भरी होती हैं, जो श्वेत रक्त कोशिकाओं, लाल रक्त कोशिकाओं या प्लेटलेट्स में विकसित होती हैं. अस्थिमज्जा स्टेम कोशिकाओं का लगातार उत्पादन करती रहती हैं और ये हमारे शरीर की आवश्यकता के अनुसार ही अलग-अलग प्रकार की कोशिकाओं को विकसित करती हैं. वयस्कों में बड़ी अस्थियों में मज्जा रक्त कोशिकाएं निर्माण करने में सहायक होता है. इसमें कुल शरीर भार का 4% समाहित रहता है, यानि लगभग 2.6 कि.ग्रा, वयस्कों में.
मज्जा दो प्रकार की होती है….पीली और लाल.
पीली मज्जा = का आधार तांतव ऊतक होता है जिसमें रक्तवाहिकाएँ और कोशिकाएँ पाई जाती हैं जिनमें अधिकांश वसाकोशिकाएँ होती हैं. पीली अस्थि मज्जा में वसा और रक्त वाहिकाओं के अलावा रैटिकुलर टिश्यू ज्यादा मात्रा में रहते हैं इसलिए इसका रंग पीला होता है.
लाल मज्जा = का आधार संयोजी ऊतक होता है जिसके ढाँचे के जाल में रजतरागी (अरजीरॉफिलिक) तंतु और उससे संबंधित जीवाणुभक्षी कोशिकाएँ तथा कई प्रकार की रक्तकणिकाएँ और उनके पूर्वगामी रूप, कुछ वसाकोशिकाएँ तथा कुछ लिंफ पर्व होते हैं. लाल अस्थि मज्जा में रेड ब्लड सेल्स और उनमें पाए जाने वाले हीमोग्लोबिन का निर्माण होता है। इसमें रेड ब्लड सेल्स की ज्यादा मात्रा होने के कारण इसका रंग लाल होता है.
अस्थि मज्जा में दो तरह की स्टेम सेल्स होती हैं
- हीमोपोएटिक :- ये ब्लड सेल्स का निर्माण करती हैं.
- स्ट्रोमल :- ये फैट, कार्टिलेज और बोन बनाती हैं.
