Nag Panchami

According to the Hindu calendar, the fifth day of the bright fortnight of the month of Sawan is celebrated as Nag Panchami. On this day, the snake god, or rather, the serpent, is worshipped. The Vedas and Puranas state that gods use snakes as ornaments, and sometimes even dance on the hood of a serpent, and sometimes even rest on a serpent as a bed. The above verse is taken from the Bhavishyottar Purana, which means, “Vasuki, Takshaka, Kaliya, Manibhadraka, Airavata, Dhritarashtra, Kakortaka, and Dhananjaya provide protection to all living beings.”

In Hindu culture, every living creature has its own role, which is performed by that creature itself. For example, just as a bull (Varusha) is used in the fields or to pull carts, and a horse is used for riding, similarly, the serpent is called the protector of the area. It is known that India is an agricultural country, and most of its population depends on agriculture. There are many animals that harm crops, but snakes help keep our fields green by destroying these harmful creatures.

Many stories have been written in the Vedas and Puranas, or rather, in other scriptures, one of them is the story of the churning of the ocean. In the churning of the ocean, gods and demons churned the ocean using Vasuki as a rope. Many substances emerged from this churning, including nectar. It is known that during the months of Ashadha and Sawan, when it rains heavily, animals emerge from their burrows and wander around in search of safe places. During this time, many poisonous creatures can enter our homes and harm us. Therefore, we pray through their worship that they do not harm anyone.

The festival of Nag Panchami is celebrated with great pomp and show across the country on the fifth day of the bright fortnight of the month of Shravan. On this day, people feed milk to snakes. However, the Puranas clearly state that snakes should be bathed with milk on Nag Panchami. According to Hindu tradition, on Nag Panchami, images of the serpent god are drawn on walls or made of gold, silver, wood, or clay. They worship the serpent god with raw milk, yogurt, durva grass, kusha grass, turmeric, sandalwood, fragrance, unbroken rice grains, flowers, roli, and rice, and then offer kheer, sevai, and sweets. Afterward, their story or the Shiva Purana is recited and aarti is performed. It should be noted that Nag Panchami is also celebrated in some places on the fifth day of the dark fortnight of the month of Shravan, and a white lotus is also used in the worship of the serpent god on this day.
