वर्ष 1991 में आज ही के दिन भारत के पूर्व प्रधानमंत्री राजीव गांधी की हत्या हुई. श्रीलंका में शांति सेना भेजने से नाराज तमिल विद्रोहियों के संगठन लिट्टे ने तमिलनाडु के श्रीपेरम्बदूर में राजीव पर आत्मघाती हमला करवाया. श्रीपेरम्बदूर में लोकसभा चुनावों के लिए प्रचार कर रहे राजीव गांधी के पास एक महिला फूलों का हार लेकर आई. जैसे ही वो महिला हार पहनाने के लिए बेहद करीब पहुंची, धमाका हो गया. धमाका इतना जबरदस्त था कि उसकी चपेट में आने वाले ज्यादातर लोगों के मौके पर ही परखच्चे उड़ गए.
46 साल के युवा नेता को खोने का मातम पूरे देश में देखा जा सकता था. देश भर में ज्यादातर जगहों पर सुबह सुबह लोगों को रेडियो के जरिए राजीव गांधी की हत्या की खबर मिली. देखते ही देखते देश भर के सरकारी संस्थानों में तिरंगा झुक गया. स्कूलों में शोकसभाएं हुईं.
जवाहर लाल नेहरू के नाती और इंदिरा गांधी के बड़े बेटे राजीव ने ब्रिटेन में कॉलेज की पढ़ाई की. इसके बाद वर्ष 1966 में वो कर्मशियल पायलट बन गए. राजीव गांधी वर्ष 1980 तक इंडियन एयरलाइंस के पायलट थे. उनके छोटे भाई संजय गांधी राजनीति में थे. वर्ष 1980 में एक विमान हादसे में संजय गांधी की मौत हो गई. इसके बाद राजीव राजनीति में आए. उन्होंने संजय गांधी की मौत के बाद खाली हुई अमेठी लोकसभा सीट से चुनाव लड़ा और जीत हासिल की.
वर्ष 1984 में इंदिरा गांधी की हत्या के बाद राजीव गांधी प्रधानमंत्री बने. लोकसभा चुनावों में कांग्रेस तीन चौथाई बहुमत से संसद में दाखिल हुई. 533 में से पार्टी ने 414 सीटें जीतीं. राजीव गांधी जब प्रधानमंत्री बने तब उनकी उम्र महज 40 साल थी. युवा प्रधानमंत्री से देश को काफी उम्मीदें थीं. उन्होंने स्कूलों में कंप्यूटर लगाने की व्यापक योजना बनाई. देश भर में उन्होंने जवाहर नवोदय विद्यालय स्थापित किए, ताकि गांव के बच्चों को छठी से 12वीं तक अच्छी पढ़ाई करने का मौका मिले. राजीव ने गांव गांव तक टेलीफोन पहुंचाने के लिए पीसीओ कार्यक्रम शुरू किया. लाइसेंस राज को कम किया गया, लेकिन वक्त बीतने के साथ सरकार की छवि पर बड़े धब्बे भी लगने लगे. सिख दंगे, भोपाल गैस कांड, शाहबानो केस, बोफोर्स कांड, काला धन और श्रीलंका नीति को लेकर सरकार की बेहद आलोचना हुई.
इतिहासकार रामचंद्र गुहा के मुताबिक राजीव गांधी के कार्यकाल में कांग्रेस के नेताओं से पसीने की गंध की जगह आफ्टर शेव की बास आने लगी. गुहा मानते हैं कि उस दौर में राजनीति में बड़े भ्रष्टाचार की शुरुआत हुई. इसकी कीमत वर्ष 1989 के चुनाव में राजीव गांधी को चुकानी पड़ी. कांग्रेस की हार हुई और वीपी सिंह की सरकार बनी. वर्ष 1990 में सरकार गिरी और कांग्रेस के समर्थन से चंद्रशेखर की सरकार बनी. वर्ष 1991 में यह सरकार भी गिर गई और चुनाव का एलान हुआ. इन्हीं चुनावों के लिए प्रचार करने राजीव तमिलनाडु गए थे.

On this day in the year 1991, former Prime Minister of India Rajiv Gandhi was assassinated. Angered by the sending of peacekeeping forces to Sri Lanka, the LTTE, an organization of Tamil rebels, carried out a suicide attack on Rajiv in Sriperumbudur, Tamil Nadu. A woman brought a garland of flowers to Rajiv Gandhi, who was campaigning for the Lok Sabha elections in Sriperumbudur. As soon as the woman came too close to wear the necklace, a blast occurred. The explosion was so tremendous that most of the people who came in its grip were blown away on the spot.
The mourning of losing a 46-year-old young leader could be seen in the whole country. In most places across the country, early in the morning people got the news of Rajiv Gandhi’s assassination through radio. In no time, the tricolor bowed down in government institutions across the country. There were condolence meetings in the schools.
Grandson of Jawaharlal Nehru and elder son of Indira Gandhi, Rajiv studied college in Britain. After this, in the year 1966, he became a commercial pilot. Rajiv Gandhi was the pilot of Indian Airlines till the year 1980. His younger brother Sanjay Gandhi was in politics. Sanjay Gandhi died in a plane crash in the year 1980. After this Rajiv came into politics. He contested and won the Amethi Lok Sabha seat, which fell vacant after the death of Sanjay Gandhi.
After the assassination of Indira Gandhi in the year 1984, Rajiv Gandhi became the Prime Minister. In the Lok Sabha elections, the Congress entered the Parliament with a three-fourth majority. Out of 533, the party won 414 seats. When Rajiv Gandhi became the Prime Minister, he was only 40 years old. The country had high hopes for the young Prime Minister. He made a comprehensive plan to install computers in schools. He established Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalayas across the country so that the children of the village get a chance to study well from 6th to 12th standard. Rajeev started the PCO program to reach the telephone from village to village. The license raj was reduced, but with the passage of time, big spots started appearing in the image of the government. The government was severely criticized for the Sikh riots, the Bhopal gas tragedy, the Shah Bano case, the Bofors incident, black money, and the Sri Lanka policy.
According to historian Ramchandra Guha, during the tenure of Rajiv Gandhi, Congress leaders started smelling of aftershave instead of sweat. Guha believes that big corruption started in politics during that period. Rajiv Gandhi had to pay the price for this in the 1989 elections. Congress was defeated and VP Singh’s government was formed. The government fell in the year 1990 and Chandrashekhar’s government was formed with the support of the Congress. In the year 1991, this government also fell and elections were announced. Rajiv went to Tamil Nadu to campaign for these elections.
