International E-Waste Day

International E-Waste Day is observed every year on October 14. The aim of this day is to raise awareness about the growing environmental and health risks associated with electronic waste (e-waste) and to highlight the importance of its proper disposal and recycling.

E-waste refers to electronic devices and materials that have become obsolete or are no longer in use, such as mobile phones, laptops, televisions, computers, and refrigerators. When these devices are discarded improperly, they can pose serious threats to the environment and human health. Raising public awareness about the importance of proper e-waste management and recycling is crucial. While most e-waste can be reused or recycled, improper disposal can lead to the release of toxic chemicals into the environment.

The objective of E-Waste Day is to encourage people to deposit their old electronic devices at recycling centers properly, enabling the recovery of precious metals and the mitigation of environmental damage. The volume of e-waste is rising rapidly due to the ever-increasing use of electronic devices. This day aims to draw attention to this crisis and inspire governments, companies, and the general public to work towards solutions.

E-waste contains various toxic substances—such as lead, mercury, cadmium, and brominated flame retardants—that can pollute soil, water, and air if not managed correctly. These pollutants can also have serious adverse effects on human health. The primary objective of E-Waste Day is to educate people that properly recycling discarded electronic devices not only helps protect the environment but also allows for the recovery and reuse of precious metals and other materials.

International E-Waste Day is organized by the WEEE Forum and other global organizations actively involved in e-waste management.
