विश्व चिंतन दिवस का इतिहास 1926 से शुरू होता है, जब वर्ल्ड एसोसिएशन ऑफ गर्ल गाइड्स एंड गर्ल स्काउट्स (WAGGGS), संयुक्त राज्य अमेरिका की गर्ल स्काउट्स और WAGGGS के अन्य सदस्य संगठनों ने इस दिन को मनाना शुरू किया. इस दिन को मनाने का उद्देश्य यह जताना है कि हम एक विविध और वैश्विक भाईचारे का हिस्सा हैं. इस दिन की स्थापना न्यूयॉर्क में हुए चौथे विश्व सम्मेलन में की गई थी, जहाँ प्रतिभागियों ने लॉर्ड बैडेन-पॉवेल और उनकी पत्नी ओलेव के साझा जन्मदिनों को मनाने का फैसला किया.

World Thinking Day is celebrated every year on 22 February and aims to promote sisterhood and women empowerment among Girl Guides and Girl Scouts.
