यज्ञोपवीतं परमं पवित्रं प्रजापतेर्यत्सहजं पुरस्तात् ।
आयुष्यमग्रं प्रतिमुञ्च शुभ्रं यज्ञोपवीतं बलमस्तु तेजः।।
हिन्दू परम्परा में 16 उपनयन संस्कार होते हैं, जिसमें एक संस्कार होता है ‘उपनयन संस्कार’ या ‘यज्ञोपवीत संस्कार’. पूर्व काल में इस संस्कार के होने के बाद ही बालक को शिक्षा या पूजा-हवन करने का अधिकार मिलता था. जब किसी बालक की उम्र दस से बारह वर्ष की हो जाती है उसके बाद ही ‘उपनयन संस्कार’ या ‘यज्ञोपवीत संस्कार’ किया जाता है. ब्रहामण, क्षत्रिय और विषयों को ही ‘यज्ञोपवीत संस्कार’ किए जाते हैं. पौराणीक काल से ही हिन्दू समाज में जनेऊ धारण करने की परम्परा रही है.
कच्चे सूत से बना पवित्र धागा होता है जो तीन धागों वाला एक सूत्र होता है जिसे हिंदी में जनेऊ और संस्कृत भाषा में “यज्ञोपवीत” कहा जाता है. जनेऊ वास्तव में एक सफेद रंग का धागा होता है, जिसे यज्ञोपवीतधारी व्यक्ति बाएँ कंधे के ऊपर तथा दाईं भुजा के नीचे पहनता है. जनेऊ एक विशिष्ट सूत्र को विशेष विधि से ग्रन्थित करके बनाया जाता है. यह केवल धर्माज्ञा ही नहीं, बल्कि आरोग्य का पोषक भी है, अत: इसको सदैव धारण करना चाहिए. जनेऊ परंपरा निभाने के लिए एक यज्ञ होता है, जिसमें जनेऊ धारण करने वाला लड़का अपने संपूर्ण परिवार के साथ भाग लेता है.
यज्ञ द्वारा संस्कार किया गया उपवीत, यज्ञसूत्र या जनेऊ एक विशिष्ट सूत्र को विशेष विधि से ग्रन्थित करके बनाया जाता है. इसमें सात ग्रन्थियाँ लगायी जाती हैं. ब्राह्मणों के यज्ञोपवीत में ब्रह्मग्रंथि होती है. तीन सूत्रों वाले इस यज्ञोपवीत को गुरु दीक्षा के बाद हमेशा धारण किया जाता है. तीन सूत्र हिन्दू त्रिमूर्ति ब्रह्मा, विष्णु और महेश के प्रतीक होते हैं.

नोट:- यज्ञोपवीत संस्कार 96 ब्राम्हण के लिए है 92 क्षत्रिय लगभग 90/86 वैश्य और 84शूद्र की लंबाई.
तीन सूत्र क्यों :- जनेऊ में मुख्यरूप से तीन धागे होते हैं. यह तीन सूत्र देवऋण, पितृऋण और ऋषिऋण के प्रतीक होते हैं और यह सत्व, रज और तम का प्रतीक है. यह गायत्री मंत्र के तीन चरणों का प्रतीक है. यह तीन आश्रमों का भी प्रतीक होता है जबकि, संन्यास आश्रम में यज्ञोपवीत को उतार दिया जाता है.
नौ तार :- यज्ञोपवीत के एक-एक तार में तीन-तीन तार होते हैं. इस तरह कुल तारों की संख्या नौ होती है. एक मुख, दो नासिका, दो आंख, दो कान, मल और मूत्र के दो द्वारा मिलाकर कुल नौ होते हैं.
पांच गांठ :- यज्ञोपवीत में पांच गांठ लगाई जाती है जो ब्रह्म, धर्म, अर्थ, काम और मोक्ष का प्रतीक होता है. यह पांच यज्ञों, पांच ज्ञानेद्रियों और पंच कर्मों का भी प्रतीक होता है.
जनेऊ की लंबाई :- यज्ञोपवीत की लंबाई 96 अंगुल होती है. इसका अभिप्राय यह है कि जनेऊ धारण करने वाले को 64 कलाओं और 32 विद्याओं को सीखने का प्रयास करना चाहिए.
चार वेद, चार उपवेद, छह अंग, छह दर्शन, तीन सूत्रग्रंथ, नौ अरण्यक मिलाकर कुल 32 विद्याएं होती है. 64 कलाओं में जैसे- वास्तु निर्माण, व्यंजन कला, चित्रकारी, साहित्य कला, दस्तकारी, भाषा, यंत्र निर्माण, सिलाई, कढ़ाई, बुनाई, दस्तकारी, आभूषण निर्माण, कृषि ज्ञान आदि.
जनेऊ के नियम :-
- यज्ञोपवीत को मल-मूत्र विसर्जन के पूर्व दाहिने कान पर चढ़ा लेना चाहिए और हाथ स्वच्छ करके ही उतारना चाहिए. इसका स्थूल भाव यह है कि यज्ञोपवीत कमर से ऊंचा हो जाए और अपवित्र न हो. अपने व्रतशीलता के संकल्प का ध्यान इसी बहाने बार-बार किया जाए.
- यज्ञोपवीत का कोई तार टूट जाए या 06 माह से अधिक समय हो जाए, तो बदल देना चाहिए. खंडित यज्ञोपवीत को शरीर पर धारण नहीं किया जाता है. धागे कच्चे और गंदे होने लगें, तो उसे बदल देना ही उचित होता है.
- मर्यादा बनाये रखने के लिए उसमें चाबी के गुच्छे आदि नहीं बांधने चाहिए.
- चिकित्सा विज्ञान के अनुसार दाएं कान की नस अंडकोष और गुप्तेन्द्रियों से जुड़ी होती है. मूत्र विसर्जन के समय दाएं कान पर जनेऊ लपेटने से शुक्राणुओं की रक्षा होती है.
- कान में जनेऊ लपेटने से मनुष्य में सूर्य नाड़ी का जाग्रण होता है. कान पर जनेऊ लपेटने से पेट संबंधी रोग एवं रक्तचाप की समस्या से भी बचाव होता है. वैज्ञानिकों अनुसार बार-बार बुरे स्वप्न आने की स्थिति में जनेऊ धारण करने से इस समस्या से मुक्ति मिल जाती है.
- माना जाता है कि शरीर के पृष्ठभाग में पीठ पर जाने वाली एक प्राकृतिक रेखा है जो विद्युत प्रवाह की तरह काम करती है. यह रेखा दाएं कंधे से लेकर कमर तक स्थित होता है.
- जनेऊ धारण करने से विद्युत प्रवाह नियंत्रित रहता है जिससे काम-क्रोध पर नियंत्रण रखने में आसानी होती है.
- जनेऊ से पवित्रता का अहसास होता है, मन को बुरे कार्यों से बचाती है. कंधे पर जनेऊ है, इसका मात्र अहसास होने से ही मनुष्य भ्रष्टाचार से दूर रहने लगता है.

There are 16 Upanayana Sanskars in Hindu tradition, in which one Sanskar is ‘Upanayana Sanskar’ or ‘Yajnopavit Sanskar’. In the past, only after the completion of this Zanskar, the child used to get the right to education or to perform puja-havan. When a child turns ten to twelve years old, only after that ‘Upnayan Sanskar’ or ‘Yajnopaveet Sanskar’ is performed. ‘Yajnopaveet Sanskar’ is performed only for Brahmins, Kshatriyas, and subjects. Since ancient times, there has been a tradition of wearing sacred thread in Hindu society.
There is a sacred thread made of raw yarn which is a thread with three threads which is called Janeu in Hindi and “Yajnopaveet” in the Sanskrit language. Janeu is actually a white colored thread, which is worn by a person wearing Yagyopaveet over the left shoulder and under the right arm. Janeu is made by writing a specific formula with a special method. It is not only a religion, but it is also a source of health, so it should always be worn. There is a Yagya to follow the Janeu tradition, in which the boy who wears the Janeu takes part along with his entire family.
The Upveet, Yagyasutra, or Janeu performed during the Yagya is prepared by writing a specific formula with a special method. Seven knots are put in it. There is a Brahmagranthi in the sacrificial fire of Brahmins. This Yagyopaveet with three sutras is always worn after Guru Deeksha. The three threads are the symbols of the Hindu trinity Brahma, Vishnu, and Mahesh.

Note: – Yagyopaveet Sanskar is for 96 Brahmins, 92 Kshatriyas approximately 90/86 Vaishyas, and 84 Shudras in length.
Why three threads:- There are mainly three threads in Janeu. These three sutras are the symbols of Devrun, Pitrurun, and Rishirun and it is the symbol of Sattva, Raja, and Tama. It symbolizes the three steps of the Gayatri Mantra. It is also a symbol of the three ashrams, while in the Sannyasa ashram, the sacrificial fire is removed.
Nine strings: – There are three strings in each string of Yagyopaveet. In this way, the total number of stars is nine. One mouth, two nostrils, two eyes, two ears, two channels of excreta and urine, there are a total of nine.
Five knots:- Five knots are put in Yajnopaveet which is the symbol of Brahma, Dharma, Artha, Kama, and Moksha. It is also a symbol of five yagyas, five senses, and five actions.
Length of Janeu:- The length of Yajnopavit is 96 fingers. It means that the wearer of Janeu should try to learn 64 arts and 32 learnings.
There is a total of 32 Vidyas including four Vedas, four Upvedas, six Angas, six Darshanas, three Sutragranths, and nine Aranyakas. In 64 arts such as architecture, culinary art, painting, literary art, handicraft, language, instrument making, sewing, embroidery, weaving, handicraft, jewelry making, agricultural knowledge, etc.
Rules of Janeu: –
- Yajnopaveet should be offered on the right ear before excrement-urine immersion and should be removed only after cleaning the hands. Its gross sense is that the sacrificial fire should be higher than the waist and should not become impure. Meditate on your resolution of fasting on this pretext again and again.
- If any wire of Yajnopaveet is broken or it is more than 06 months, then it should be changed. The fragmented Yajnopavit is not worn on the body. If the thread starts getting raw and dirty, then it is better to change it.
- In order to maintain dignity, bunches of keys, etc. should not be tied in it.
- According to medical science, the vein of the right ear is connected to the testicles and the genitals. Wrapping sacred thread on the right ear at the time of urination protects the sperm.
- Wrapping the sacred thread in the ear awakens the solar pulse in a human being. Wrapping the sacred thread on the ear also protects against stomach-related diseases and blood pressure problems. According to scientists, in case of frequent bad dreams, wearing a sacred thread gets rid of this problem.
- It is believed that there is a natural line running down the back of the body which acts like an electric current. This line is located from the right shoulder to the waist.
- By wearing Janeu, the electric current is controlled, due to which it is easy to control anger and lust.
- Janeu gives a feeling of purity and protects the mind from bad deeds. Just by realizing that there is a sacred thread on the shoulder, a person starts staying away from corruption.
