National Homemaker Day

The day we are discussing today relates to women. In our language, a home is referred to as ‘griha,’ from which the term ‘grihini’ (homemaker) is derived. It signifies a woman who manages and cares for a household. While in common parlance, a ‘grihini’ is simply described as someone who “takes care of the house,” this term fails to do justice to their true contribution and multifaceted personality. National Homemaker Day is observed every year on November 3rd. Its primary objective is to honor those women who work tirelessly, day and night, for their families and dedicate a significant portion of their lives to household responsibilities.

Homemakers skillfully manage their families, oversee household affairs, raise children, and handle a multitude of other tasks. In reality, a homemaker is not merely someone who cooks or cleans; she acts as a manager, financial advisor, educator, doctor, counselor, and a master architect who transforms scattered elements into a beautiful home. These women remain dedicated to the service of their families 24 hours a day, 365 days a year—without any holidays or wages. Homemakers contribute to the formation and development of a family in various ways, such as by caring for family members, managing finances, serving as a child’s first teacher, fostering family unity, and preserving culture and traditions.

In Indian society, the work of a homemaker is often taken for granted. Their daily routine—waking up before everyone else, preparing meals for the entire family, cleaning the house, getting children ready for school, caring for the elderly, and being the last to go to sleep at night—is carried out continuously, without a fixed salary, time off, or defined working hours. With the passage of time—or, in today’s digital age—there has been a significant increase in women’s education, social awareness, and self-reliance. In the present day, many women are balancing household responsibilities with careers, businesses, social service, and other creative pursuits. By leveraging modern technology, they are making domestic tasks more efficient, while also contributing to the family’s financial stability through online education, digital banking, household budget management, and the operation of small-scale businesses. This shift demonstrates that a homemaker is not merely confined to the home; rather, she possesses immense potential for leadership, management, entrepreneurship, and self-reliance.

Despite their significant contributions to their families and society, homemakers often face numerous challenges—such as an excessive workload, financial dependence, and mental stress, a lack of respect, a scarcity of personal time, and the struggle for a distinct social identity. In the journey of becoming a homemaker, women frequently set aside many of their own dreams and personal ambitions. Even in today’s digital age, societal attitudes have barely evolved; the contributions of a homemaker are still often dismissed as “doing nothing.” Such a perspective is deeply narrow-minded and disrespectful. (It is often wrongly assumed that the contribution of a professional and that of a homemaker cannot be equal.)

In reality, a house is merely a structure of bricks and stone; it is the homemaker who truly transforms it into a home. National Homemaker’s Day is more than just a celebration—it is an opportunity to recognize that a homemaker is one of the most vital pillars of any family. Through her hard work, she keeps the household organized; through her love, she nurtures relationships; through her values, she shapes the future of her children; and through her sacrifices, she ensures the well-being and happiness of her family. A homemaker’s impact extends far beyond the four walls of a house; she plays a crucial role in building the family, society, and the nation as a whole.
