हिन्दू संस्कृति के किसी भी धार्मिक अनुष्ठान या यज्ञ में मौली बाँधने की परम्परा है आखिर मौली क्यों बांधा जाता है. मौली का तात्पर्य सिर से होता है चुकिं मौली को हाथ में बाँधने के कारण इसे कलावा भी कहते हैं. इसका वैदिक उपनाम मणिबंध भी है. पुरानों के अनुसार भगवान शिव का एक नाम चंद्रमौली भी है चुकिं पुरानों में वर्णन मिलता है कि भगवान शंकर अपने सिर पर चन्द्रमा को धारण करते हैं इसीलिए उन्हें चंद्रमौली भी कहा जाता है.
मौली बांधना वैदिक परम्परा का हिस्सा है. चुकि यज्ञ क्या धार्मिक अनुष्ठान के दौरान इसे बांधे जाने की परम्परा तो युगों से चली आ रही है. बताते चलें कि, इसका प्रयोग संकल्प सूत्र के साथ-साथ रक्षा सूत्र में भी प्रयोग किया जाता है. पुरानों के अनुसार, असुरों के राजा बलि की अमरता के लिए भगवान वामन ने उनकी कलाई पर रक्षा सूत्र बाँधा था. वहीं दूसरी तरफ यह भी माना जाता है कि, देवी लक्ष्मी ने राजा बलि के हाथों में अपने पति की रक्षा के लिए यह बंधन बांधा था. देखा जाय तो मौली या कलावा एक प्रकार का रक्षा सूत्र होता है.
मौली कच्चे धागे से बनाई जाती है जिसमें प्राय: तीन रंग (लाल, पीला व हरा) होते हैं. इसे त्रिदेव के नाम से जाना जाता है. कभी-कभी यह पांच धागों की भी बनाई जाती है जिसमें लाल, पीला, हरा, नीला और सफेद रंगों का प्रयोग होता है इसे पंचदेव के नाम से जानते हैं. मौली का प्रयोग अक्सर हाथों की कलाइयों, गले या कमर में की जाती है. इसके अलावा देवी-देवताओं के स्थानों पर, किसी नई वस्तु या जानवरों को बांधा जाता है.
मंत्र:-
।। येन बद्धों बली राजा दानवेन्द्रों महाबल:। त्रेन त्वामप्रतिबन्धने रक्षे मा चल मा चल ।।
शास्त्रों के अनुसार पुरुषों एवं अविवाहित कन्याओं को दाएं हाथ में कलावा बांधा जाता है जबकि, विवाहित स्त्रियों को बाएं हाथ में बाँधने का नियम है. कलावा बंधवाते समय कुछ नियमों का पालन करना आवश्यक होता है जैसे जिस हाथ में कलावा बांधा जा रहा हो उस हाथ की मुट्ठी बंधी होनी चाहिए साथ ही दूसरा हाथ सिर पर होना चाहिए. मौली कहीं भी बांधें परन्तु एक बात का हमेशा ध्यान रखे कि, इस रक्षा सूत्र को बांधते समय इसे तीन बार ही लपेटना चाहिए और बाँधने के समय वैदिक मन्त्रों का प्रयोग जरुर करना चाहिए. पर्व त्योहारों के अलावा किसी अन्य दिन अगर मौली या कलावा बंधवाना हो तो मंगलवार या शनिवार के दिन का प्रयोग करना शुभ माना जाता है. उतारी हुई मौली या कलावा को पीपल के पेड़ के नीचे या बहते हुए जल में डाल देना चाहिए.
मौली या कलावा बंधने के तीन कारण होते है – 1.आध्यात्मिक, 2.चिकित्सीय एवं 3. मनोवैज्ञानिक.
किसी भी शुभ कार्य की शुरुआत के समय या नई वस्तु खरीदने पर मौली बाँधने की परम्परा चली आ रही है इसका अर्थ यह है कि, मौली हमारे जीवन में शुभता प्रदान करें. चुकिं, मौली या कलावा को मणिबन्ध के उपर बांधते हैं. बताते चलें कि, हाथ के मूल में तीन रेखाएं होती है जिसे मणिबंध कहा जाता है. यह किसी व्यक्ति के भाग्य व जीवनरेखा का उद्गम स्थल भी माना जाता है. इन तीन रेखाओं में दैहिक, दैविक और भौतिक जैसे त्रिविध तापों को देने व मुक्त करने की शक्ति होती है. इन मणिबंधों को ब्रह्मा, विष्णु और महेश के नाम से भी जानते है या यूँ कहें कि, दुर्गा, लक्ष्मी और सरस्वती का भी वास इन मणिबंधों पर ही होता है.
जब भी हमलोग कलावा या मौली को कलाई पर रक्षा सूत्र पढ़ते हुए बंधवाते हैं तो ये तीन धागों का सूत्र त्रिदेवियों को समर्पित हो जाता है . इस रक्षा सूत्र को संकल्प पूर्वक बाँधने से व्यक्ति पर मारण, मोहन, विद्वेष्ण, उच्चाटन, भुत-प्रेत और जादू टोन का असर नहीं होता है. मौली बाँधने का आध्यात्मिक पक्ष यह है कि, मौली बाँधने से त्रिदेव (ब्रह्मा, विष्णु और महेश) तथा त्रिदेवियाँ (दुर्गा, लक्ष्मी और सरस्वती) की कृपा प्राप्त होती है. ज्ञात है कि, ब्रह्मा की कृपा से कीर्ति, विष्णु कि कृपा से रक्षा और महेश की कृपा से दुर्गुणों का नाश होता है ठीक उसी प्रकार लक्षी से धन, दुर्गा से शक्ति और सरस्वती की कृपा से बुद्धि प्राप्त होती है.
मौली या कलावा किसी भी देवी-देवता के नाम पर बाँधी जाती है जिससे संकटों या यूँ कहें कि विपत्तियों से मानव की रक्षा होती है. इसमें संकल्प निहित होता है. मौली बांधकर किये गये संकल्प का उल्लघन करना संकट में डालने वाला सिद्ध हो सकता है. मौली बाँधने वाले व्यक्तियों को उसकी पवित्रता पर विशेष ध्यान देना चाहिए. कमर पर मौली बाँधने से कोई भी बुरी आत्मा शरीर में प्रवेश नहीं कर पाती है. अक्सर छोटे बच्चों के कमर पर मौली बाँधी जाती है जिससे बच्चों को पेट में किसी प्रकार का रोग नही होता है.
इसके चिकित्सीय पक्ष भी है. प्राचीनकाल से ही मानव अपने कलाइयों, कमर, पैर या गले में मौली बांधते हैं. इसके बांधने से त्रिदोष या यूँ कहें कि, वात, पित्त और कफ का संतुलन बना रहता है साथ ही ब्लड प्रेशर, हार्ट अटैक, डायबटीज और लकवा जैसे रोगों से भी बचाब होता है.
हाथ में बांधने से मानव स्वस्थ रहता है और उसकी ऊर्जा का क्षय नहीं होता है. शरीर विज्ञान के अनुसार शरीर के कई प्रमुख अंगों तक पहुंचने वाली नसें कलाइयों से होकर गुजरती है अत: कलाइयों पर कलावा बाँधने से इन नसों की क्रिया नियंत्रित रहती है.
मौली या कलावा बाँधने वके मनोवैज्ञानिक लाभ भी मिलते है. मौली या कलावा बाँधने से मन पवित्र और शक्तिशाली बंधन होने का अहसास होता रहता है और मन में शांति और पवित्रता बनी रहती है. मानव के मन मस्तिष्क में बुरे विचार नहीं आते है और वह गालात रास्तों पर भी नहीं भटकता है. शर्माजी यहां तक कहते हैं कि अगर नियम से मौली या कलावा बांधा जाय और पवित्रता बनाई रखी जाय तो मानव के उप्पर होने वाली विपत्तियों को कम किया जा सकता है.

Its Vedic name is also Manibandh. According to the Puranas, one name of Lord Shiva is Chandramouli as it is described in the Puranas that Lord Shankar wears the moon on his head, which is why he is also called Chandramouli.
Tying Molly is a part of Vedic tradition. Since the tradition of tying it during Yagya or religious rituals is going on for ages. Let us tell you that, it is used in Sankalp Sutra as well as in Raksha Sutra. According to the Puranas, for the immortality of Bali, the king of the Asuras, Lord Vamana tied a thread of protection on his wrist. On the other hand, it is also believed that Goddess Lakshmi tied this bond in the hands of King Bali to protect her husband. If seen, Molly or Kalava is a kind of defense formula.
Molly is made from raw thread which usually has three colors (red, yellow, and green). This is known as Tridev. Sometimes it is also made of five threads in which red, yellow, green, blue, and white colors are used, it is known as Panchdev. Molly is often used on the wrists of the hands, neck, or waist. Apart from this, some new things or animals are tied to the places of deities.

According to the scriptures, Kalava is tied on the right hand of men and unmarried girls, while there is a rule to tie it on the left hand of married women. While tying kalava, it is necessary to follow some rules like the hand in which kalava is being tied should have a clenched fist and the other hand should be on the head. Tie molly anywhere, but always keep one thing in mind that, while tying this thread, it should be wrapped only three times and Vedic mantras must be used while tying it. If Mauli or Kalava is to be tied on any day other than festivals, then it is considered auspicious to use Tuesday or Saturday. The removed Molly or Kalava should be put under the Peepal tree or in the flowing water.
There are three reasons for tying Mauli or Kalava… 1. Spiritual, 2. Medical and 3. Psychological.
The tradition of tying Molly at the beginning of any auspicious work or buying a new item is going on, which means that Molly should bring auspiciousness into our life. Chukin, Molly or Kalava is tied on the manibandha. Let us tell that there are three lines in the root of the hand which is called Manibandh. It is also considered to be the origin place of a person’s fate and lifeline. These three lines have the power to give and release the triple heat physical, divine and physical. These main bandhas are also known by the names of Brahma, Vishnu, and Mahesh or to say that Durga, Lakshmi, and Saraswati also reside on these mani-bandhas only.
Whenever we tie Kalava or Mauli on the wrist while reciting the Raksha Sutra, then this thread of three threads is dedicated to the Tridevis. By tying this Raksha Sutra with determination, the person does not get affected by Maran, Mohan, Videshna, Uchchatan, ghosts, and witchcraft. The spiritual aspect of tying Molly is that, by tying Molly, the blessings of the Tridev (Brahma, Vishnu, and Mahesh) and the Tridevi’s (Durga, Lakshmi, and Saraswati) are received. It is known that fame is attained by the grace of Brahma, protection by the grace of Vishnu, and evil qualities are destroyed by the grace of Mahesh, in the same way, wealth is attained by Lakshmi power by Durga and wisdom by the grace of Saraswati.
Molly or Kalava is tied in the name of any deity, which protects human beings from troubles or calamities. There is determination in it. Violating the resolution made by tying Molly can prove to be a troublemaker. People who tie Molly should pay special attention to its purity. Arvind Kumar Sharmaji says that by tying Molly to the waist, no evil spirit can enter the body. Molly is often tied around the waist of small children so that children do not get any kind of stomach disease.
It also has a medical side. Since ancient times, humans tie molly around their wrists, waist, feet, or neck. By tying it, the tri dosha, or in other words, the balance of Vata, Pitta, and Kapha is maintained, as well as it protects against diseases like blood pressure, heart attack, diabetes, and paralysis.
By tying it in the hand, a person remains healthy and his energy does not get depleted. According to physiology, the nerves that reach the major organs of the body pass through the wrists, therefore, by tying Kalava on the wrists, the function of these nerves is controlled.
There are also psychological benefits of tying Molly or Kalava. By tying Mauli or Kalava, the mind feels a pure and powerful bond, and peace and purity remain in the mind. Bad thoughts do not come into the mind of a human being and he does not go astray on the wrong paths. Sharmaji even says that if Molly or Kalava is tied according to rules and purity is maintained, then the calamities that befall human beings can be reduced.
