Essence and Greetings of Deepawali Dr. Prof. Jai Ram Jha, Editor The festival of lights, Deepawali, is a cross-cultural event that unites people from all walks of life to create a beautiful tapestry of happiness and light. During Deepawali, flickering oil lamps, known as diyas, dance in the darkness, symbolizing the victory of light over darkness, good over evil, and wisdom over ignorance. Known by many by another name, Diwali, this ancient Hindu festival has great importance that transcends religious boundaries and represents global ideals that are meaningful to people from all walks of life. Deepawali is fundamentally a period for meditation and contemplation, a chance to chase away the ghosts that linger in our hearts and thoughts. It encourages us to light our inner lamps of appreciation, forgiveness, and compassion in order to promote harmony and understanding. The event promotes a philosophy of love and peace by urging people to let go of negativity and appreciate life’s good things. Based on the Sanskrit terms “deepa” (lamp) and “avali” (row), the word “Deepawali” itself refers to the rows of lamps that cast light on the darkness. This symbolism is a metaphor for the inner light that each person possesses and goes beyond the actual lighting of lamps. Deepawali inspires deeds of kindness, charity, and compassion by urging us to cherish and spread this inner brilliance. Deepawali’s importance extends beyond religious celebrations to include broader cultural and societal ramifications. The celebration acts as a reminder of the power of wisdom and knowledge to drive off ignorance’s gloom. The myths that have been passed down through the ages are likewise closely related to Deepawali. The tale of Lord Rama’s return to Ayodhya following his victory over the demon king Ravan is one such tale. As they lit lamps to greet him, the people of Ayodhya celebrated his victory over the powers of evil. This story reaffirms the festival’s theme of good ultimately winning over evil and overcoming adversity. In addition to providing a breathtaking visual aspect to the celebrations, the usage of fireworks during Diwali has deeper symbolic value. The popping of fireworks represents the dismantling of ignorance and the realization of one’s own enlightenment. But in recent years, there have been calls for more environmentally friendly festivities as people have become more conscious of the effects that fireworks have on the environment. Deepawali is a time for pardoning and making amends. It inspires people to patch up strained bonds and close gaps with loved ones. Giving and receiving sweets and presents turns into a friendly act that strengthens bonds between people. The event imparts to us the importance of forgiving others and the transformational ability of love to mend broken relationships and mend wounds. The spirit of Deepawali is felt around the world, and its celebration is not just in India. People from different ethnic origins take part in the celebrations all around the world, acknowledging the message of light, love, and hope that unites all people. Lights are strung around the cities, and cultural gatherings highlight the diversity of Indian customs, promoting respect and understanding amongst different cultures. May the kaleidoscope of Deepawali, where lights, colors, and customs all come together harmoniously, serve as an inspiration for us to live compassionate, understanding, and thankful lives. Let our “Shubh Deepawali” (Happy Deepawali) greetings be more than simply a cliche; let them be sincere wishes for everyone’s success and well-being.
