International Animation Day
We are referring to an art form or technique in which still images, drawings, or objects are presented in a rapid, sequential manner, creating the illusion of movement or life before the viewer’s eyes. This art form is known as animation. International Animation Day is celebrated every year on October 28th. Today, animation plays a significant role in fields such as education, science, advertising, communication, and entertainment.
International Animation Day was initiated in 2002 by the International Animated Film Association (ASIFA). Its purpose is to foster appreciation for the diverse forms of animation and to promote its contributions. It is worth noting that on this very day in 1892, in Paris, France, Charles-Émile Reynaud publicly showcased moving images using his ‘Théâtre Optique.’
Animation is an art and technique that imparts the impression of motion to static images or objects. It has transformed the world of entertainment; for instance, cartoons, animated films, video games, and digital stories captivate audiences of all ages—from children to adults. Furthermore, it is also extensively utilized in the field of education.
In today’s digital era, the field of animation has seen rapid growth. It is widely employed in the film industry, television, advertising, mobile applications, and social media. Additionally, technologies such as Artificial Intelligence (AI), Virtual Reality (VR), and Augmented Reality (AR) have further expanded the possibilities within animation.
In India, too, the animation industry is making steady progress. Through their creativity and technical expertise, Indian artists are gaining recognition both domestically and internationally. Animation is a field that offers numerous opportunities for both employment and self-employment.
To mark International Animation Day, animated films are screened, and workshops as well as other educational programs are organized worldwide, with the aim of making this art form more popular and raising awareness about it.
