What is Gandhism?

The thoughts of Mahatma Gandhi are called Gandhism. The first question regarding Gandhism is whether there is such a thing as Gandhism, then definitely there is no such thing as Gandhism. Because Gandhiji has not presented a systematic theory related to politics, nor has he established any theory. Gandhiji himself said. There is no such thing as Gandhism and neither do I want to leave any sect behind me. I do not even claim that I have invented any new theory. I have only tried to extract eternal truths from my daily life and on everyday questions in my own way. The followers of Gandhiji collected the disorganized thoughts of Gandhiji and gave them the name of Gandhism.

According to Pattami Sita Ramaiah- “Gandhism is not just a compilation of some rules and principles but a philosophy of life, it presents a new approach towards life and tries to solve the problems of modern life on the basis of ancient Indian philosophy”. ‘Gandhiji’s main ideas are found in his main book Hind Swarajya Atmakatha (My Experiments with Truth), Satyagraha Sarvodaya Shanti and Ahimsa in War, etc. Apart from this, weekly papers are found in South Africa, Indian Opinion, Harijan Navjeevan, Harijan Sevak, etc. in India.

God is the truth, the speech of the pure soul is the truth. Public service is an essential part of the means of attaining God. Gandhiji considered the human group as a great form of God and their service as God’s service. Gandhism is based on reality. Gandhiji was a Karmayogi. He believed in Karma. His philosophy is based on his personal experiences, experiments of truth, and non-violence. The basic basis of Gandhism is Satyagraha. The meaning of Satyagraha is to uphold the truth. In satyagraha one has to use the moral scriptures of love and truth by abandoning deceit and deceit. Satyagraha is the weapon of a strong and brave man.

Gandhiji was of the opinion that only on the basis of non-violence can a well-ordered society be established and the future progress of human life. The meaning of non-violence is not to hurt any other person in any form and it also means to resist the will of the oppressor on the basis of spiritual strength. Non-violence is the symbol of spiritual strength. Gandhiji wanted to build such a society based on non-violence. In which all human beings are virtuous and prudent, there should be no place for selfish interests. Everyone will live a happy, prosperous, and assured life. Gandhiji believed in the progress, rise, and welfare of all people. He believed that the progress of society and the nation is possible only with the upliftment of the neglected poor.

Untouchability has been a serious fault of society. Gandhiji wanted to establish social unity by eradicating untouchability prevailing in society. For the development and welfare of the untouchables in society, he named them “Harijan”. Along with economic decentralization in Gandhism, the principle of trusteeship has also been mentioned. His idea was that the capitalists should be made trustees of the property through a change of heart and the capitalists should use that property for the benefit of the entire society. Gandhism is purely a moral philosophy. Along with the end, special emphasis has been given in Gandhism that the means should also be ethical. His opinion was that if you do not get the holy means, then leave that end only. Gandhiji was a supporter of human welfare. He used to think about the welfare of all human beings. He opposed imperialism and supported world peace and internationalism.

Main principles of Gandhism...

The main principles of Gandhism can be presented in essence under the headings – The ideas of truth and non-violence In Gandhian philosophy, the ideas of truth and non-violence have the highest place, Truth and non-violence are essential for the development of religious sentiments of human beings. According to ‘Truth is God’. Violence is against the sanctity and unity of life. The sanctity of the end and means Gandhiji is of the opinion that if the end is pure, then the means to achieve it should also be pure, so Gandhiji adopted the pure means (truth and non-violence) to achieve the end (freedom). Politics and Religion Gandhiji believed in a deep connection between politics and religion. Gandhiji used to say that there can be no politics apart from religion. “Politics is a death trap because it kills the soul”. He used to say that religion provides the basis of morality for every work of human life. Decentralization of Power Gandhiji was in favor of decentralization of power in political and economic fields.

Decentralization of Political Powers- By decentralization of power, Gandhiji means that the Gram Panchayats should be given all rights to manage and administer their villages. Decentralization of Economic Powers- Gandhiji was in favor of decentralization in the economic field and used to favor the establishment of cottage industries in place of big industries. Gandhiji was in favor of removing the prevailing economic inequality in society in a non-violent way.

That’s why Gandhiji suggested the principle of trusteeship. According to Gandhiji, rich people should not consider their wealth as their own but consider it as the heritage of the society and use the wealth which is more than the requirement in the interest of the society. Gandhiji also opposed imperialism. According to Gandhiji, the imperialist country not only exploits the subordinate country economically and morally, but this is also the reason for the world wars. Gandhiji was of the opinion that disarmament and non-violent world society would lead to the end of imperialism itself. Although all people agree with the theoretical point of view of Gandhian ideology, from its practical point of view, many express disagreement on many grounds.

The main basis of criticism of Gandhism. The criticism against Gandhian philosophy is raised by the critics that it is a purely imaginary and emotional philosophy away from reality. In the present circumstances, it is beyond reality to establish an ideal state and a non-violent state. Because, in the absence of police and military force, neither the peace system can remain in the state nor the nation can remain stable. Critics have pointed out the lack of originality in Gandhism. Because, Gandhiji borrowed ideas from Geeta, Bible, Tolstoy, etc. Gandhiji has not propounded any new principles.

By giving excessive emphasis on non-violence, Gandhiji has made it impractical in modern times. Critics are of the opinion that it is always impossible to solve national and international problems with non-violence. Gandhiji wants to implement the principle of Satyagraha everywhere but Satyagraha cannot be successful everywhere. This non-violent method of Gandhiji is taking the form of violence and sabotage today. Political parties are misusing the Satyagraha by adopting unfair means to fulfill their selfish interests. Gandhi’s philosophy is contradictory philosophy, on the one hand, Gandhiji criticizes capitalism and on the other hand, he wants to maintain it under the guise of trusteeship. Gandhiji favored decentralization in the economic sector and supported cottage industries. Critics are of the opinion that it is impossible to meet the needs of the population of a vast country like India through cottage industries.

Humanistic Ideology- The aim of both Gandhism and Marxism is human development and public welfare. Establishment of a classless society – The ultimate goal of both ideologies is to establish a classless society. Paramountcy of labor – In both ideologies, labor has been said to be essential for all. Everyone should work hard and eat and no one should exploit anyone. Supporters of world peace – Both ideologies support the fact that no powerful country free from world wars should exploit a weak country. Difference between means and end – In Gandhism, along with the best end, the purity of the means has also been considered necessary, while Marxism does not believe in the purity of the means to achieve the sacred end.

Personal property rights – Gandhism is not against personal property while Marxism is against personal property. Differences on the question of class struggle- where there is no place for class struggle in Gandhism, while communism (Marxism) considers class struggle necessary to achieve the goal. Belief in democracy – Gandhiji had unwavering faith in democracy. He has told the democratic method necessary for the development of the personality of a person, but communism (Marxism) condemns democracy by calling it the rule of useless people.
