The chains of slavery…

In Indian history, the first freedom struggle of 1857 was an event that shook the foundation of British rule. Meerut was the center of this struggle, where on May 10, 1857, the Indian soldiers of the British-Indian Army openly rebelled against the British East India Company.

This rebellion was not limited to Meerut only but spread all over the country. The people and leaders who were martyred in this rebellion are considered the harbingers of India’s independence and their bravery is remembered. While the whole country still remembers people like Rani Lakshmibai of Jhansi, Nanasaheb Peshwa, Tatya Tope, and Begum Hazrat Mahal, on the other hand, there were some courageous heroes who have been forgotten by history. We think that the center of the rebellion was North India, but the truth is that the rebellion had also reached the remote tribal areas of Maharashtra and Chhattisgarh. This is the story of Baburao Shedmake, who led the rebellion of the Gond tribe in 1857. At present it is called Chandrapur and Gadchiroli district of Maharashtra.

During British rule, it was called the Chanda district. In the year 1854, the British took this area under their authority through Lord Dalhousie’s Doctrine of Lapse. According to the ‘Doctrine of Lapse’, if any state had no successor or its king had no son and his family line was not moving forward, then that state would come under British rule. The British took over Chanda in March 1854 and R.S. Ellis became the first district collector of Chanda. At that time there used to be many zamindaris in the district which were under Raj-Gond families. These zamindaris existed before the arrival of the Marathas in the 18th century. Obviously, these families opposed the British and the biggest reason for this was the British occupation of their lands.

In the year 1870, Chanda’s Pathanpura Gate (British Library) was one such zamindari in Molampalli (present-day Gadchiroli district) which had 24 villages. About 25 years old Baburao Shedmake was the landlord of Molampalli. He was born on March 12, 1833, in Kishtpur village of Aheri tehsil of Gadchiroli district. Apart from this, no information is available about his family or his early life. At the beginning of March 1858, Shedmake made an army of about 500 tribal youths from Gond, Madiya, and Rohilla and taught them to fight. With the help of this army, he captured the entire Rajgarh pargana of the Chanda district.

When this news reached Chandrapur, the District Collector Captain Christen sent a contingent of the British Army to quell the rebellion. On March 13, 1858, there was a war between the British and Shedmake’s army near Nandgaon-Ghosari, in which Shedmake’s army won. His army not only killed many British soldiers but also destroyed their arms and ammunition. TERMS AND CONDITIONS Meanwhile, Venkatrao, the Zamindar of Adapalli and Ghot joined hands with Shedmake and both of them made Gond and Rohilla tribals, with an army of 1200 soldiers, lose their teeth by declaring war against the British army. The joint army of these two marched towards the Garhi-Surla fort and took that area directly under its control.

When Christian came to know about this, he sent another detachment that surrounded the hill from all sides. But this did not make any difference to Shedmake’s army. His soldiers started pelting stones at the British army. Eventually, the British had to flee from there. A large number of British soldiers were also killed in this battle. After facing a crushing defeat twice, Captain Christen again sent troops from Nagpur under the leadership of Lieutenant John Nuttall. There was a fierce battle between the two armies first at Saganpur on 19th April 1858 and then at Bamanpet on 27th April 1858 and this time too Shedmake and his army won. Baburao Shedmake (Artist – Sudarshan Barapatre) Encouraged by this success, Shedmake attacked the telegraph camp at Chinchgundi on the Pranahita River in Aheri Zamindari on the night of 29 April 1858. In the eyes of the tribals of that area, it was such a device spread all over the country that bound them in the chains of slavery. Telegraph operators Hall and Gartland were killed in the attack, but Peter managed to escape.

Through the dense forests of Aheri, Peter reached Captain Christen. Peter gave eye-witness information of this attack to Captain Christen, enraged at this, Christen called an army contingent from Nagpur under the leadership of Captain Shakespeare. Captain Shakespeare along with his army attacked the Gond-Rohilla army of Baburao-Vyankatrao near Ghot village on May 10, 1857, as a result, the British army had to face a humiliating defeat for the third time. Sydney Morning Herald, Mon 11 October 1858 page 3 Amit Bhagat.

After three consecutive defeats, Captain Christen changed his strategy. He told Aheri’s zamindar Rani Lakshmibai that if she did not catch Shedmake, she would be prosecuted for giving shelter and helping the rebels and her zamindari would also be taken away. This threat had an effect, and Lakshmibai agreed to help. In July 1858, Lakshmibai’s soldiers managed to capture Shedmake at Bhopalpatnam but when he was being taken to Aheri, he escaped with the help of Rohilla guards. After this, Shedmake looted many areas under the control of the British. Letter from Nagpur Commissioner Plowden.

Amit Bhagat Till now he had become a big threat to the British. But finally, Lakshmibai’s soldiers caught Shedmake on September 18, 1858, and handed him over to Captain Christen. Shedmake was arrested and brought to Chandrapur and tried on serious charges. On October 21, 1858, the verdict was given in this case, it was something like this, on the basis of evidence, the prisoner (Baburao) was convicted for rebelling against the British rule, raising an armed force, Ghot on May 10, 1858, and Ghot on April 27, 1858. Resisting government forces in the villages of Bamanpeta, capturing two government soldiers for 12 days, looting them, and getting his soldiers to attack the camp of Mr. Gartland and Mr. Hall at Chinchgundi on 29 April 1858, their looted property is found guilty of the charges of snatching. The court, finding the prisoner guilty of the above charges and finding that he had no cause for causing a disturbance in the district, sentences him that you, Baburao, son of Poolaisur Bapu, shall be sent to jail at Chandrapur at four o’clock in the afternoon. Be hanged in front of you till you die.

All the property of the prisoner, the Deputy Commissioner of the District, and the District Magistrate Captain W. Sequestration are ordered by H. Kristen. Baburao Shedmake was hanged in Chandrapur Jail at 4 pm the same day. Some of his companions were also prosecuted and some were hanged and some were sentenced to life imprisonment. According to local folklore, Shedmake had magical powers, due to which he broke the noose four times when he was hanged. That’s why he was killed by putting him in lime. According to another legend, Shedmake was tortured and hanged from a Peepal tree outside Chandrapur Jail.

Khidrpur port in the nineteenth century Meanwhile Shedmake’s companion Venkatrao absconded and took refuge in Bastar. There he tried to form an army against the British. But the king of Bastar caught him and handed him over to the British. In the year 1860, there was a case against him in Chandrapur. Venkatrao’s mother Nagabai negotiated with the British and handed over all her property to them. For this reason, Venkatrao got life imprisonment instead of death. In this way, the rebellion in this area came to an end. Lakshmibai of Aheri was rewarded for her help. He was given the zamindari of Venkatrao’s Adapalli and Ghot which included 67 villages. Captain Christen received the title of ‘Companion of the Bath’ for his services.

Even today there is a small monument in Chandrapur at the place where Veer Baburao Shedmake was hanged. In the nineteenth century, the rebellion of 1857 in the Khidarpur port, Chandrapur, and its surrounding areas may have been forgotten by the country today, but tribal folklore and Because of the songs, of Shedmake are still alive in the hearts of the local people.
