- सूरत के तट पर पहुंचा:- आज ही के दिन वर्ष 1608 में व्यापार के उद्देश्य से ईस्ट इंडिया कंपनी का हेक्टर नामक जहाज सूरत शहर के बन्दरगाह पहुंचा था. इस जहाज के कैप्टन का नाम विलियम हॉकिस था. बताते चलें कि, उस समय भारत में मुगल शासक जहाँगीर का साम्राज्य था और सूरत भारत का प्रमुख व्यापारिक केंद्र हुआ करता था.
- कलकत्ता शहर की आघारशिला रखी:- आज ही के दिन वर्ष 1690 में जॉब कार्नोक ने कलकत्ता (अब कोलकाता) शहर की आघारशिला रखी थी.
- ‘राधा स्वामी सत्संग’ के संस्थापक शिव दयाल साहब:- आज ही के दिन वर्ष 1818 में ‘राधा स्वामी सत्संग’ के संस्थापक शिव दयाल साहब का जन्म आगरा, उत्तर प्रदेश में जन्माष्टमी के दिन हुआ था. इनके माता-पिता हाथरस के परम संत तुलसी साहब के अनुयायी थे. पाँच वर्ष की आयु में शिव दयाल को पाठशाला भेजा गया, जहाँ उन्होंने हिन्दी, उर्दू, फ़ारसी और गुरुमुखी सीखी थी. छोटी आयु में ही शिव दयाल का विवाह फरीदाबाद के इज़्ज़त राय की पुत्री नारायनी देवी से हुआ था, जो स्वभाव की बहुत विशाल हृदयी और पतिव्रता थी. शिव दयाल जी स्कूल से ही बांदा में एक सरकारी कार्यालय के लिए फ़ारसी के विशेषज्ञ के तौर पर चुना गया परन्तु उन्हें नौकरी रास नहीं आई. वर्ष 1861 में उन्होंने संत सतगुरु के रूप में स्वयं को प्रस्तुत किया और अनुयायियों के एक समूह का निर्देश देने लगे.
- रचनाकार नर्मद:- आज ही के दिन वर्ष 1833 में गुजराती भाषा के युग प्रवर्तक माने जाने वाले रचनाकार नर्मद का जन्म सूरत के ब्राह्मण परिवार में हुआ था. उनका पूरा नाम नर्मदाशंकर लाल शंकर दवे था. नर्मद के पिता का नाम लालशंकर है. नर्मद की माध्यमिक शिक्षा वहीं के एल्फिंस्टन इन्स्टिट्यूट में संपन्न हुई थी. नर्मद ने 22 वर्ष की उम्र में पहली कविता लिखी थी. जिस प्रकार हिन्दी साहित्य में आधुनिक काल के आरंभिक अंश को ‘भारतेंदु युग’ संज्ञा दी जाती है, उसी प्रकार गुजराती में नवीन चेतना के प्रथम कालखंड को ‘नर्मद युग’ कहा जाता है.
- मराठी साहित्यकार नरसिंह चिन्तामन केलकर:- आज ही के दिन वर्ष 1872 में मराठी साहित्यकार नरसिंह चिन्तामन केलकर का जन्म महाराष्ट्र की मिरज रियासत में हुआ था. उन्होंने पूना से क़ानून की डिग्री लेने के बाद केलकर ने सतारा में वकालत आरम्भ की थी. जब उन्होंने पूना में वकालत करना आरम्भ किया था तो उसी समय लोकमान्य तिलक को अपने पत्रों ‘केसरी’ और ‘मराठा’ संपादन में एक सहायक की आवश्यकता थी. सूचना मिलते ही केलकर 1896 में पूना आकर लोकमान्य के पत्रों से जुड़ गए. नरसिंह चिन्तामन केलकर, लोकमान्य बालगंगाधर तिलक के अनन्य सहयोगी प्रसिद्ध पत्रकार और मराठी भाषा के प्रबुद्ध साहित्यकार थे.
- स्वतंत्रता सेनानी बाल गंगाधर खेर:- आज ही के दिन वर्ष 1888 में स्वतंत्रता सेनानी बाल गंगाधर खेर का जन्म रत्नागिरि में एक ब्राह्मण परिवार में हुआ था. बाल गंगाधर खेर ब्रिटिश कालीन बॉम्बे राज्य के प्रधानमंत्री तथा स्वतंत्रता के बाद बॉम्बे स्टेट के बनने वाले पहले मुख्यमंत्री थे.
- अमर शहीद शिवराम राजगुरु:- आज ही के दिन वर्ष 1908 में स्वतन्त्रता सेनानी शिवराम राजगुरु का जन्म पुणे जिला के खेडा गाँव में हुआ था. महज 06 वर्ष की आयु में पिता का निधन हो जाने से बहुत छोटी उम्र में ही ये वाराणसी विद्याध्ययन करने एवं संस्कृत सीखने आ गये थे. राजगुरु को कसरत (व्यायाम) का बेहद शौक था और छत्रपति शिवाजी की छापामार युद्ध-शैली के बड़े प्रशंसक थे. विद्याध्ययन के दौरान राजगुरु का का सम्पर्क अनेक क्रान्तिकारियों से हुआ था. चन्द्रशेखर आजाद से इतने अधिक प्रभावित हुए कि उनकी पार्टी हिन्दुस्तान सोशलिस्ट रिपब्लिकन आर्मी से तत्काल जुड़ गये. पण्डित चन्द्रशेखर आज़ाद, सरदार भगत सिंह और यतीन्द्रनाथ दास आदि क्रान्तिकारी इनके अभिन्न मित्र थे. साण्डर्स का वध करने में इन्होंने भगत सिंह तथा सुखदेव का पूरा साथ दिया था जबकि चन्द्रशेखर आज़ाद ने छाया की भाँति इन तीनों को सामरिक सुरक्षा प्रदान की थी.
- इंपीरियल टोबैको कंपनी ऑफ इंडिया लिमिटेड:- आज ही के दिन वर्ष 1910 में अंग्रेजी तंबाकू कंपनी इम्पीरियल ने इंपीरियल टोबैको कंपनी ऑफ इंडिया लिमिटेड का गठन किया था. आई. टी.सी. इंडिया लिमिटेड का पूरा नाम – वर्ष 1910 में इम्पीरियल टोबैको ऑफ इंडिया लिमिटेड था. उसके बाद वर्ष 1970 में इंडियन टोबैको कंपनी लिमिटेड, वर्ष 1974 में आईटीसी लिमिटेड व वर्ष 2001 से आईटीसी एलटीडी है. आई. टी.सी भारत में लगभग 80% सिगरेट का निर्माण व बिक्री करती हैं. यह भारत की निजी कंपनियों में कर-पूर्व लाभ की दृष्टि से दूसरे स्थान पर आती है.
- महिला क्रांतिकारी बीना दास:- आज ही के दिन वर्ष 1911 में महिला क्रांतिकारी बीना दास का जन्म कृष्णानगर, बंगाल प्रान्त, ब्रितानी भारत में हुआ था. बीना के पिता का नाम बेनी माधव दास जो कि ब्रह्म समाजी शिक्षक थे जबकि उनकी माता का नाम सरला देवी था वो एक सामाजिक कार्यकर्त्ता थी. बीणा दास कोलकाता में महिलाओं के संचालित अर्ध-क्रान्तिकारी संगठन छात्री संघ की सदस्या थीं जिसके लिए उन्हें नौ वर्षों के लिए सख़्त कारावास की सजा दी गई थी. वर्ष 1932 में कलकत्ता विश्वविद्यालय में समावर्तन उत्सव मनाया जा रहा था. और मंच पर कुमारी वीणादास जो उपाधि लेने आई थीं लेकिन, तत्कालीन गवर्नर और मुख्य अतिथि स्टैनले जैकसन पर गोली चला दी जो गवर्नर के कान से छू कर निकल गई और वह तत्काल मंच पर लेट गया. अदालत में वीणादास ने एक साहसपूर्ण बयान दिया था परन्तु अखबारों पर रोक लगा दिये जाने के कारण वह बयान प्रकाशित न हो सका. वीणादास को दस साल कारावास का दण्ड मिला था. वर्ष 1947 में वीणादास का युगान्तर समूह के भारतीय स्वतन्त्रता कार्यकर्ता जतीश चन्द्र भौमिक से विवाह हो गया.
- समाज सुधारक रामकृष्ण गोपाल भंडारकर:- आज ही के दिन वर्ष 1925 में समाज सुधारक रामकृष्ण गोपाल भंडारकर का निधन हुआ था.
- अभिनेत्री एवं फिल्म निर्माता अंजलि देवी:- आज ही के दिन वर्ष 1927 को अभिनेत्री एवं फिल्म निर्माता अंजलि देवी का जन्म पेद्दापुरम, पूर्व गोदावरी जिला, मद्रास प्रेसीडेंसी, ब्रिटिश भारत में हुआ था. अंजलि देवी ने फिल्मी कैरियर की शुरुआत वर्ष 1936 में बाल कलाकार के तौर पर शुरू किया था. वर्ष 1947 में तेलुगू भाषा की पारिवारिक फिल्म ‘बालाराजू’ में अंजलि ने पहली बार मुख्य भूमिका निभाई थी. उन्होंने 20 से अधिक सफल फिल्मों का निर्माण किया था.
- विद्वान राधाकमल मुखर्जी:- आज ही के दिन वर्ष 1968 को आधुनिक भारतीय संस्कृति और समाजशास्त्र के विद्वान राधाकमल मुखर्जी का निधन हुआ था.
- वी.वी. गिरी:- आज ही के दिन वर्ष 1969 को भारत के चौथे राष्ट्रपति वी.वी. गिरी बने थे. उनका कार्यकाल 24 अगस्त, 1969 से 24 अगस्त, 1974 तक था.
- फखरूद्दीन अली अहमद:- आज ही के दिन वर्ष 1974 में फखरूद्दीन अली अहमद भारत के पांचवे राष्ट्रपति बने थी. उनका कार्यकाल 24 अगस्त 1974 से लेकर 11 फरवरी 1977 तक था.
- अभिनेत्री अदिति शर्मा:- आज ही के दिन वर्ष 1983 में अभिनेत्री अदिति शर्मा का जन्म लखनऊ, उत्तर प्रदेश में हुआ था. अदिति के पिता का नाम डॉ देविंदर शर्मा और माता का नाम अनिला शर्मा है. उन्होंने अपने कैरियर की शुरुआत वर्ष 2004 में जी टीवी के टैलेंट-हंट शो इंडियाज बेस्ट सिनेस्टार की खोज से की थी और वह उस शो की विजेता रही थीं. उसके बाद अदिति कई टीवी सीरियल में दिखाई दी थी. अदिति ने अपने फिल्मी कैरियर की शुरुआत वर्ष 2007 फिल्म खन्ना वर्सेज अय्यर से की थी.
- युद्धबंदी मानने से इंकार किया:- आज ही के दिन वर्ष 1999 में पाकिस्तान ने कारगिल ऑपरेशन के दौरान भारत द्वारा पकड़े गये 8 युद्धबंदियों को युद्धबंदी मानने से इंकार किया था.
- संगीतकर कल्याणजी:- आज ही के दिन वर्ष 2000 में संगीतकर कल्याणजी का निधन हुआ था.
- अनुरोध किया:- आज ही के दिन वर्ष 2002 में संयुक्त राज्य अमेरिका के उप-विदेशमंत्री रिचर्ड आर्मिटेज ने भारत-पाकिस्तान से बातचीत शुरू करने का अनुरोध किया था.
- चिंकारा शिकार के मामले में:- आज ही के दिन वर्ष 2007 में जोधपुर सत्र न्यायालय ने चिंकारा शिकार के मामले में सलमान खान को वर्ष 2006 में सुनाई गई 05 वर्ष की कैद के निर्णय के खिलाफ दायर याचिका को अस्वीकार कर दिया गया था.
- भूतपूर्व राज्यपाल ए. आर. किदवई:- आज ही के दिन वर्ष 2016 में बिहार, पश्चिम बंगाल, राजस्थान और हरियाणा के भूतपूर्व राज्यपाल का निधन हुआ था.

- Shiv Dayal Saheb, the founder of ‘Radha Swami Satsang’:- On this day in the year 1818, Shiv Dayal Saheb, the founder of ‘Radha Swami Satsang’, was born on the day of Janmashtami in Agra, Uttar Pradesh. His parents were followers of the supreme saint Tulsi Sahib of Hathras. At the age of five, Shiv Dayal was sent to school, where he learned Hindi, Urdu, Farsi, and Gurmukhi. At a young age, Shiv Dayal was married to Narayani Devi, daughter of Izzat Rai of Faridabad, who was very big-hearted and devoted to nature. Shiv Dayal Ji was selected from school as an expert in Persian for a government office in Banda but he did not like the job. In the year 1861, he presented himself as Saint Satguru and started instructing a group of followers.
- Creator Narmad:- On this day in the year 1833, the creator Narmad, who is considered to be the originator of the Gujarati language, was born in a Brahmin family in Surat. His full name was Narmadashankar Lal Shankar Dave. Narmad’s father’s name is Lalshankar. Narmad’s secondary education was completed at the same Elphinstone Institute. Narmad wrote his first poem at the age of 22. Just as the early part of the modern period in Hindi literature is called ‘Bharatendu Yug’, in the same way, the first period of a new consciousness in Gujarati is called ‘Narmad Yug’.
- Marathi writer Narsingh Chintaman Kelkar: – On this day in the year 1872, Marathi writer Narsingh Chintaman Kelkar was born in Miraj princely state of Maharashtra. After completing his law degree from Poona, Kelkar started practicing law in Satara. When he started practicing law in Poona, at the same time Lokmanya Tilak needed an assistant in editing his letters ‘Kesari’ and ‘Maratha’. As soon as the information was received, Kelkar came to Poona in 1896 and joined the letters of Lokmanya. Narsingh Chintaman Kelkar, an exclusive associate of Lokmanya Balgangadhar Tilak, was a famous journalist and an enlightened writer of the Marathi language.
- Freedom Fighter Bal Gangadhar Kher:- On this day in the year 1888, freedom fighter Bal Gangadhar Kher was born in a Brahmin family in Ratnagiri. Bal Gangadhar Kher was the Prime Minister of British-era Bombay State and the first Chief Minister of Bombay State after independence.
- Immortal Martyr Shivram Rajguru:- On this day in the year 1908, freedom fighter Shivram Rajguru was born in Kheda village of Pune district. Due to the death of his father at the age of just 06, he had come to Varanasi at a very young age to study and learn Sanskrit. Rajguru was very fond of the gymnasium (exercise) and was a great admirer of Chhatrapati Shivaji’s guerilla warfare style. Rajguru had contact with many revolutionaries during his studies. Chandrashekhar was so impressed with Azad that he immediately joined his party Hindustan Socialist Republican Army. Revolutionaries like Pandit Chandrashekhar Azad, Sardar Bhagat Singh, and Yatindranath Das were his inseparable friends. He gave full support to Bhagat Singh and Sukhdev in killing Saunders while Chandrashekhar Azad provided strategic security to these three like a shadow.

- Female revolutionary Bina Das:- On this day in the year 1911, female revolutionary Bina Das was born in Krishnanagar, Bengal province, British India. Bina’s father’s name was Beni Madhav Das who was a Brahmo Samaj teacher while her mother’s name was Sarla Devi, and she was a social worker. Bina Das was a member of Chhatri Sangh, a semi-revolutionary organization run by women in Kolkata, for which she was sentenced to rigorous imprisonment for nine years. In the year 1932, Samavartan Utsav was being celebrated at Calcutta University. And Kumari Veenadas who had come on the stage to receive the title, shot at the then governor and chief guest Stanley Jackson, which touched the ear of the governor and he immediately lay down on the stage. Veena Das had given a bold statement in court, but due to the ban on newspapers, that statement could not be published. Veenadas was sentenced to ten years imprisonment. In the year 1947, Veena Das got married to Jatish Chandra Bhowmick, an Indian independence activist of the Yugantar group.
