1.      Kumaragupta ascended the imperial throne after Chandragupta Vikramaditya.

2.      However, the name of another ruler appears prior to Kumaragupta: Govindagupta, the son of Dhruvadevi (Ramagupta’s wife).

3.      Based on the Gupta genealogy, most historians agree that Kumaragupta became the ruler of the Gupta dynasty after Samudragupta.

4.      During Kumaragupta’s reign, a branch from Central Asia conquered Bactria, and subsequently, the threat of a Huna invasion via the Hindu Kush Mountains loomed; however, the Gupta Empire remained safe from the Huna threat during his rule.

5.      Skandagupta’s Bhitari inscription reveals that the Gupta Empire faced an invasion by the Pushyamitras during the final days of Kumaragupta’s reign; nevertheless, with the assistance of his son Skandagupta, he saved the empire from them.

6.      Kumaragupta’s coins indicate that he performed the Ashvamedha sacrifice. Details regarding his well-organized administration are found in the Mandsaur inscription.

7.      Kumaragupta assumed the titles of Mahendraditya, Shri-Mahendra, and Mahendra-kalpa.

8.      Following Kumaragupta’s death, his son Skandagupta became the ruler of the Gupta Empire.

9.      Skandagupta was the last significant ruler of the Gupta dynasty; he was a brave and mighty warrior.

10.  The Hunas (referred to as Mlechchhas) invaded during his reign, but he defeated them through his valor and upheld the prestige of the empire.

11.  The Junagadh inscription records Skandagupta’s success against the Hunas.

12.  Skandagupta’s empire extended across the entirety of Northern India, stretching from Kathiawar to Bengal. The western territories included Saurashtra, Cambay, Gujarat, and parts of Malwa.

13.  Skandagupta was not only a capable military commander but also an efficient administrator. He sent an ambassador to the Chinese emperor’s court in 466 CE, indicating friendly relations with distant China.

14.  He also assumed the title of ‘Lord of a Hundred Kings’.

15.  For administrative convenience, he shifted his capital to Ayodhya.

16.  Internal problems began to arise during his reign; feudal lords became conscious of their rights. Nevertheless, he succeeded in maintaining the power and prestige of the Gupta Empire.

17.  Skandagupta is referred to as ‘Shakraditya’ in the Kahaum pillar inscription, ‘Devaraya’ in the Aryamanjushri-mulakalpa, and ‘Sri Parikshipruva’ in the Junagadh inscription.

18.  Skandagupta entrusted the task of restoring the Sudarshan Lake to Parnadatta’s son, Chakrapalita, the governor of Saurashtra.

19.  Skandagupta was the last significant ruler of the Gupta Empire. Although several rulers reigned after his death, Buddhagupta was the most powerful among them.

20.  Taking advantage of the weakness of later rulers, feudal lords began to assert themselves; simultaneously, Huna invasions so severely diminished Gupta power that the empire could not be sustained after Skandagupta.

1.    चन्द्रगुप्त विक्रमादित्य के बाद कुमारगुप्त साम्राज्य की गद्दी पर बैठा.

2.    परन्तु कुमारगुप्त से पूर्व एक और शासक का नाम आता है. वह शासक ध्रुवदेवी (रामगुप्त की पत्नी) का पुत्र गोविन्द गुप्त था.

3.    गुप्त वंशावली के आधार पर अधिकांश इतिहासकार इस मत से सहमत हैं की समुद्रगुप्त के उपरांत कुमारगुप्त की गुप्त वंश का शासक बना.

4.    कुमारगुप्त के शासनकाल में मध्य काल में मध्य एशिया के देशों की एक शाखा ने बैक्ट्रिया को जीत लिया और उसके बाद हिन्दुकुश के पहाड़ों से हूणों के आक्रमण का खतरा मंडराने लगा. लेकिन उसके शासन काल में गुप्त सम्राज्य हूणों के खतरे से दूर ही रहा.

5.    स्कंदगुप्त के भीतरी अभिलेखों से पता चलता है की कुमारगुप्त के अंतिम दिनों में गुप्त साम्राज्य पर पुश्य्मित्रों का आक्रमण हुआ. लेकिन उसने अपने पुत्र स्कंदगुप्त की सहायता से साम्राज्य को पुष्यमित्रों से बचा लिया.

6.    कुमारगुप्त के सिक्कों से पता चलता है कि उसने अश्वमेघ यज्ञ किया. सुव्यवस्थित शासन का वर्णन उसके मंदसौर अभिलेख से मिलता है.

7.    कुमारगुप्त ने महेंद्रादित्य, श्रीमहेन्द्र और महेंद्र कल्प की उपाधियाँ धारण की थी.

8.    कुमारगुप्त की मृत्यु के उपरांत उसका पुत्र स्कंदगुप्त गुप्त साम्राज्य का शासक बना.

9.    स्कंदगुप्त गुप्तवंश का अंतिम महत्वपूर्ण शासक था. वह एक वीर और पराक्रमी योद्धा था.

10. इसके शासनकाल में हूणों (मलेच्छों) का आक्रमण हुआ, लेकिन उसने अपने पराक्रम से हूणों को पराजित कर साम्राज्य की प्रतिष्ठा स्थापित की.

11. हूणों पर स्कंदगुप्त की सफलता का उल्लेख जूनागढ़ अभिलेख से मिलता है.

12. स्कंदगुप्त का साम्राज्य कठियावाड़ से बंगाल तक सम्पूर्ण उत्तरी भारत में फैला हुआ था। पश्चिम में सौराष्ट्र, कैम्बे, गुजरात तथा मालवा के भाग सम्मिलित थे.

13. स्कंदगुप्त एक योग्य सैन्य संचालक होने के साथ ही एक कुशल प्रशासक भी था. उसने 466 ई. में चीनी सम्राट के दरबार में एक राजदूत भेजा. इसके उसके सुदूर चीन के साथ मैत्रीपूर्ण संबंधों का भी पता चलता है.

14. इसने सौ राजाओं के स्वामी की भी उपाधि धारण की.

15. प्रशासनिक सुविधा को ध्यान में रखते हुए उसने अपनी राजधानी को अयोध्या स्थनान्तरित किया.

16. इसके शासन काल में आन्तरिक समस्याएं गठित होने लगीं. सामंत अपने अधिकारों के प्रति जागरूक हो गए थे. फिर भी वह गुप्त साम्राज्य की शक्ति और प्रतिष्ठा कायम रखने में सफल रहा.

17. स्कंदगुप्त को कहौम स्तंभ लेख में ‘शक्रादित्य’ आर्यगंजु श्री मूल कल्प में ‘देवरॉय’ तथा जूनागढ़ अभिलेख में ‘श्री परिक्षिपृवआ’ कहा गया है.

18. स्कंदगुप्त ने सुदर्श झील के पुनरुद्धार का कार्य सौराष्ट्र के गवर्नर पर्यदत्त के पुत्र पत्रपालित को सौंपा था.

19. स्कंदगुप्त गुप्त साम्राज्य का अंतिम महत्वपूर्ण शासक था. इसकी मृत्यु के बाद अनेक शासकों ने शासन किया लेकिन उसमे सबसे अधिक शक्तिशाली शासक बुद्धगुप्त हुआ.

20. परवर्ती शासकों की कमजोरी का लाभ उठाकर एक ओर सामंतों ने सर उठाना शुरू किया, दूसरी ओर हूणों के आक्रमण ने गुप्तों की शक्ति को इतना कम कर दिया की स्कंदगुप्त के बाद गुप्त साम्राज्य को कायम नहीं रखा जा सका.
