खारे पानी के विशाल क्षेत्र को महासागर कहते हैं. यह पृथ्वी का 71 प्रतिशत भाग अपने आप से ढांके रहता है, यह करीब 3000 मीटर गहरा होता है जबकि, सागर (समुद्र) महासागर की तुलना में बहुत ही छोटे होते हैं. समुद्र आमतौर पर वहीं स्थित होते है जहाँ भूमि और समुद्र मिलते है. महासागर ही ऐसा स्थान होता है जहाँ समुद्र अपने पानी को खाली करते है, जबकि महासागर अपने पानी की निकासी नहीं खोजते.
बताते चलें कि, समुद्र जो की भूमि के निकट होते है व महासागरो की तुलना में कम गहरे होते है. इस कारण पौधे और जीव जंतुओ के लिए यहाँ फलना फूलना संभव होता है चुकिं यहां आमतौर पर रोशनी से प्रकाशित होते है जबकि, महासागर जो की बहुत गहरे होते है यहाँ समुद्री जीवन का बचा रहना भी मुश्किल होता है क्योकि यहाँ प्रकाश (रौशनी) नहीं पहुँच पाती है साथ ही दबाव भी अधिक होता है. बताते चलें कि, सागर और महासागर दोनों में एक समान बात यह है की दोनों ही पानी की विशाल का भंडार होता है.
महासागर :- प्रशांत महासागर, अटलांटिक महासागर, हिन्द महासागर, आर्कटिक महासागर और दक्षिणी महासागर.
सागर :- दक्षिणी चीन सागर, भूमध्य सागर, बेरिंग सागर, कैरीबियन सागर, ओखोटस्क सागर, पूर्वी चीन सागर, जापान सागर, उत्तरी सागर, काला सागर, लाल सागर, बाल्टिक सागर और पीला सागर.
बताते चलें कि, प्रशांत महासागर सबसे बड़ा महासागर है, जो कि पृथ्वी के 1/3 भाग को घेरे हुए है. जलवायु निर्धारण में महासागरों व सागरों का महत्वपूर्ण योगदान होता है.ज्ञात है कि, पहले अण्टार्कटिक महासागर (दक्षिणी महासागर) को महासागर का दर्जा नहीं प्राप्त था. वर्ष 2000 में उसे इंटरनेशनल हाइड्रोग्राफ़िक आर्गेनाइजेशन द्वारा महासागर का दर्जा दिया गया. पृथ्वी के दक्षिणी ध्रुवीय क्षेत्र के चारों तरफ दक्षिणी महासागर का विस्तार है.

Seas:- South China Sea, Mediterranean Sea, Bering Sea, Caribbean Sea, Sea of Okhotsk, East China Sea, Sea of Japan, North Sea, Black Sea, Red Sea, Baltic Sea and Yellow Sea.
Let us tell you that the Pacific Ocean is the largest ocean, which surrounds 1/3 of the Earth. Oceans and seas have an important role in determining the climate. It is known that earlier the Antarctic Ocean (Southern Ocean) did not have the status of an ocean. In the year 2000, it was given the status of ocean by the International Hydrographic Organization. The Southern Ocean extends around the southern polar region of the Earth.
