Papankusha Ekadashi…

During a satsang, a devotee asked Maharaj Ji, “Maharaj Ji, please suggest a way to destroy one’s own sins and also liberate one’s family and clan.” Val Vyas Suman Ji Maharaj says that once, Dharmaraja Yudhishthira also asked Lord Vasudeva this very question. Lotus-eyed Shyamsundar replied, “O Yudhishthira! This Ekadashi, which destroys sins, is called Papankusha Ekadashi, celebrated on Ashwin Shukla Ekadashi. O King! On this day, one should worship Lord Padmanabha in the prescribed manner, as this Ekadashi bestows desired results and leads to heaven.

The fruits of rigorous penance attained by humans for a long time can be achieved simply by saluting Lord Garudadhwaj. Those who, out of ignorance, commit numerous sins but also pay obeisance to Hari do not go to hell.” Merely chanting the name of Lord Vishnu bestows the merits of all the pilgrimages in the world. Those who seek refuge in Lord Vishnu, the wielder of the Sharnga bow, never have to suffer the tortures of Yamaraja. Those who, being Vaishnavas, denigrate Shiva, or those who, being Shaivites, denigrate Vishnu, are surely destined for hell. The rewards of thousands of Vajpeya and Ashvamedha sacrifices do not even equal one-sixteenth of the Ekadashi fast. There is no other virtue comparable to Ekadashi in the world, nor is there anything as sacred as it in the three worlds. Similarly, there is no other fast comparable to this Ekadashi. As long as one does not observe the Ekadashi fast of Lord Padmanabha, sin resides in one’s body.

O King! This Ekadashi bestows heaven, salvation, health, a beautiful wife, food, and wealth. Even the Ganges, Gaya, Kashi, Kurukshetra, and Pushkar are not as virtuous as this Ekadashi fast. By fasting and keeping a vigil on Harivasar and Ekadashi, one easily attains the status of Vishnu. Furthermore, O King! Those who observe this fast liberate ten generations of their maternal lineage, ten generations of their paternal lineage, ten generations of their female lineage, and ten generations of their friends. They assume divine forms, four-armed, wearing yellow clothes and holding a rosary in their hand, and ascend to Vishnuloka. O best of kings! By observing this fast in childhood, youth, and old age, even sinful people attain salvation instead of suffering. Those who observe this Papankusha Ekadashi fast on the Shukla Paksha of the month of Ashwin attain Hariloka at the end of their lives and are freed from all sins. Just as donating gold, sesame seeds, land, a cow, food, water, an umbrella, and shoes prevents a person from seeing Yamaraj.

Worship materials: –

Altar, Kalash, Saptdhan (seven grains), Panch Pallava (five leaves), Roli (blossom), Gopi Chandan (sandalwood paste), Ganga water, milk, curd, cow ghee lamp, betel nut (betel nut), honey, Panchamrit (panchamrit), Mogra incense sticks, seasonal fruits, flowers, Amla (Indian gooseberry), pomegranate, cloves, coconut, lemon, Navaidh (sweet), banana, and Tulsi leaves and buds.

Fasting method: –

First, you should wake up early on Ekadashi morning, bathe, and take a vow to fast. An idol or picture of Lord Vishnu is then installed. Then, incense, lamps, coconut, and flowers should be used to worship Lord Vishnu. Finally, meditate while remembering the form of Lord Vishnu. Then, recite the Vishnu Sahasranaam (six thousand names) and perform the ritualistic worship while reading the story. Note: A vigil should be observed on the night of Ekadashi. The next day, on Dwadashi, the fast should be concluded by donating food and offering Dakshina to Brahmins in the morning.

Story:

In ancient times, a very cruel hunter named Krodhan lived on the Vindhya Mountains. He spent his entire life in violence, plunder, alcoholism, and falsehood. When the end of his life approached, Yamaraj ordered the messengers of Yama to bring Krodhan. The messengers arrived ahead of time and informed him that tomorrow was his last day. Fearing death, Krodhan ran to the ashram of Maharishi Angira and fell at his feet. Pleased by his pleadings, the Maharishi instructed him to observe the fast of Ekadashi on the Shukla Paksha of the Ashwin month. The hunter also observed the fast and worshipped Papakunsha Ekadashi as per the prescribed rituals and, with the blessings of the Lord, ascended to Vishnuloka. The messengers of Yama, rubbing their hands, returned to Yamaloka without Krodhan.

Result:

Ekadashi helps all beings attain their ultimate goal: devotion to God. This day is considered highly auspicious and fruitful for serving the Lord with complete devotion. On this day, if a person, free from desires and serving the Lord with a pure heart, is truly blessed.
