On the day of Margashirsha Shukla Ekadashi, Lord Shri Krishna preached the Srimad Bhagavad Gita to Arjun in Kurukshetra. Hence this date became famous by the name of Geeta Jayanti. Fast Story: –

In ancient times, a king named Vaikhanas used to rule Gokul city. He was a very religious king and his subjects were spending their days happily and there was no crisis of any kind in the kingdom. What happened one day was that King Vaikhanas was resting in his bedroom and his dream he saw that his father was suffering a lot in hell. Seeing his father in such suffering, the king became restless and his sleep was disturbed the king kept thinking about his dream throughout the night but could not understand anything. The king sent for the Brahmins early in the morning. When the Brahmins arrived, the king told them about his dream and asked for a way to get free. Brahmindev said that only a sage named Parvat can solve this doubt of yours, hence you should go to him as soon as possible and ask for its solution. King Vaisanakh did the same and with his doubts, he reached the ashram of the mountain sage and after seeing the sage he prostrated himself and told about his dream. Parvata Muni saw the king’s father with the yogic vision that he was indeed suffering pain in hell. They came to know the reason for this and Parvat Muni said to the king, O king, your father has to face the punishment for the sins of his previous birth. Being under the control of his step-wife, he did not give respect to another woman, he had prohibited Ratidaan.

The king asked him, O sage, how can my father get rid of this? Parvat Muni told him that Rajan, if he fasts on Margashirsha Shukla Ekadashi as per the rituals and donates his virtue to his father, then he can get salvation. As soon as the king observed a fast on Margashirsha Ekadashi and donated his virtue to his father, auspicious songs started coming from the sky. The king directly saw that his father was going to Vaikuntha. He said, O son, after enjoying the pleasures of heaven for some time, I will attain salvation. All this was possible due to your fasting; you have fulfilled the duty of being a son in the true sense by freeing me from hellish life. Good luck to you son.
