रुपहले पर्दे ही चरित्र अभिनेताओं की संसार होता है. इस संसार में अभिनय व संवाद अदायगी का अहम् रोल होता है. आज हम एक ऐसे ही चरित्र अभिनेता के बारे बात कर हैं जिन्होंने, एक फिल्म में कहा था “हम बोलेगा तो बोलोगे की बोलता है “. जिनके चेहरे पर हमेशा मेकअप और भावनाओं का तूफ़ान नज़र आता है साथ ही अपने हर किरदार में जान डालते हुए यह अहसास करा जाता है कि उनके बिना यह किरदार बेकार हो जाता. ऐसे ही जीवंत अभिनय तथा बेहतरीन संवाद अदायगी के बलबूते दर्शकों के दिलों में खलनायक का भयावह रुप उकेरने वाले अदाकार ‘प्राण’ को कभी शब्दों में नहीं ढ़ाला जा सकता है.
प्राण का जन्म 12 फ़रवरी, 1920 को पुरानी दिल्ली के बल्लीमारान इलाके में बसे एक रईस परिवार में हुआ था. उनके बचपन का नाम ‘ प्राण कृष्ण सिकंद ‘ था. प्राण बचपन से ही पढ़ाई में होशियार थे और बड़े होकर उनका फोटोग्राफर बनना चाहते थे. बताते चलें कि, प्राण सिगरेट के बेहद शौकीन थे. महज, 12 साल की उम्र से ही सिगरेट पीना शुरू कर दिया था. प्राण के बारे में कहा जाता था कि, शहर के सभी पान दुकानदार उनके देखते ही उनकी पसंद की सिगरेट निकल कर रख देते थे.
पान की दुकान पर प्राण की मुकालात वली मोहम्मद से हुई. उन्होंने प्राण को घूरकर देखा और पता लिखकर दिया और मिलने कहा. लेकिन, प्राण ने ध्यान नहीं दिया. कुछ दिनों बाद पुन: मुलाकात हुई और वली ने पुरानी बात दुहराई. काफी कोशिस करने के बाद प्राण ने अभिनय करने के लिए राजी कर लिया. उनकी पहली फिल्म पंजाबी थी जिसमे प्राण ने हीरो की भूमिका अदा की थी और उसके निर्देशक ‘दलसुख पंचोली’ थे.
बंटवारे के बाद प्राण को अपना फिल्मी करियर मुंबई आकर दोबारा से शुरू करना पड़ा. इस दौरान प्राण को कई मुश्किलों का सामना करना पड़ा. एक समय ऐसा आया कि प्राण अपनी हिम्मत छोड़ चुके थे तभी उनकी मुलाकात लेखक सआदत हसन मंटो से हुई, जिन्होंने उन्हें देव आंनद की फिल्म जिद्दी में रोल दिलवाने में बड़ी भूमिका निभाई . इसके बाद उन्होंने मुड़कर नहीं देखा. उन्होंने अपने कैरियर में कई फ़िल्में की उनमे कश्मीर की कली, खानदान, औरत, बड़ी बहन, जिस देश में गंगा बहती है, हाफ टिकट, उपकार ,पूरब और पश्चिम और डॉन आदि.
बताते चलें कि, प्राण की शुरुआती फ़िल्में हों या बाद की फ़िल्में उन्होंने अपने आप को कभी नहीं दोहराया. उन्होंने अपने हर किरदार के साथ पूरी ईमानदारी से न्याय किया, चाहे वो भूमिका छोटी हो या बड़ी. उनकी बेहतरीन संवाद अदायगी की विशिष्ट शैली लोग अभी तक नहीं भूले हैं वहीँ, कुछ ऐसी भी फ़िल्में हैं जिनमें नायक पर खलनायक प्राण ही भारी पड़ गए.

- लेकिन मैं उस क़िस्म का जेलर नहीं हूं. मैं न तो छुट्टी पर जाऊंगा और न तबादले की दरख़्वास्त करूंगा. तुम्हारा वो रिकॉर्ड है, तो हमारा भी एक रिकॉर्ड है. हमारी जेल से संगीन से संगीन क़ैदी जो बाहर गया है उसने तुम्हारे उस दरबार में दुआ मांगी है तो यही दुआ मांगी है कि अगर दोबारा जेल जाए तो रघुवीर सिंह की जेल में न जाए.
बताते चलें कि, प्राण ने अबतक 350 से अधिक फ़िल्मों में अभिनय किया. उन्हें 03 बार ‘फ़िल्मफेयर के सर्वश्रेष्ठ सहायक अभिनेता’ का पुरस्कार मिला. साथ ही उन्हें वर्ष 1997 में फ़िल्मफेयर के लाइफ टाइम अचीवमेंट के ख़िताब से भी सम्मानित किया गया. प्राण को हिन्दी सिनेमा में उनके योगदान के लिए भारत सरकार ने वर्ष 2001 में पद्म भूषण सम्मान से सम्मानित किया गया था. उसके बाद वर्ष 2012 में भारतीय सिनेमा के सर्वोच्च राष्ट्रीय सम्मान दादा साहब फाल्के पुरस्कार से भी सम्मानित किया गया.

On whose face a storm of make-up and emotions is always visible, along with putting life into each of his characters, it is felt that without him this character would have become useless. The actor ‘Pran’, who engraves the sinister form of the villain in the hearts of the audience with such lively acting and excellent dialogue delivery, can never be put into words.
Pran was born on February 12, 1920, in a wealthy family in the Ballimaran area of Old Delhi. His childhood name was ‘Pran Krishna Sikand’. Pran was smart in his studies since childhood and wanted to become his photographer when he grew up. Let us tell you that Pran was very fond of cigarettes. Just started smoking cigarettes at the age of 12. It was said about Pran that all the five shopkeepers of the city used to put out the cigarette of his choice on seeing him.
Pran met Wali Mohammad at the paan shop. He stared at Pran and wrote down the address and asked to meet him. But, Pran did not pay attention. After a few days, they met again and Vali repeated the old thing. After much effort, Pran agreed to act. His first film was Punjabi in which Pran played the role of hero and its director was ‘Dalsukh Pancholi’.
After the partition, Pran had to start his film career again after coming to Mumbai. During this, Pran had to face many difficulties. There came a time when Pran had given up his courage, then he met writer Saadat Hasan Manto, who played a big role in getting him a role in Dev Anand’s film Ziddi. After this, he did not look back. He did many films in his career, among them Kashmir Ki Kali, Khandaan, Aurat, Badi Behen, Jis Desh Me Ganga Behti Hai, Half Ticket, Upkar, Purab Aur Paschim and Don, etc.
Let’s tell that, whether it is Pran’s early films or his later films, he never repeated himself. He did full justice to his every character, be it small or big. People have not yet forgotten the special style of his excellent dialogue delivery, while there are some such films in which the villain’s life overshadowed the hero.

Let us tell you that Pran has acted in more than 350 films till now. He received the award for ‘Best Supporting Actor of Filmfare’ 03 times. Along with this, he was also awarded the title of Life Time Achievement of Filmfare in the year 1997. Pran was awarded the Padma Bhushan in 2001 by the Government of India for his contribution to Hindi cinema. After that, in the year 2012, he was also honored with the Dadasaheb Phalke Award, the highest national honor of Indian cinema.
