(The Power of Being Understood)

International Translation Day

Language and communication are essential to understanding any culture or civilization. Those who facilitate this connection are known to us as translators or interpreters. International Translation Day is observed every year on September 30th. This day is dedicated to translators, interpreters, and all those professionals who serve as bridges between different languages and cultures.

The purpose of International Translation Day is to recognize the importance of the role of translators and to promote dialogue and understanding between different languages and cultures. This day tells how translators and interpreters play an important role in connecting different societies, be it business, science, politics or literature.

The United Nations and other global organizations recognized it as an official day, understanding the need and importance of translation. In the year 2017, the United Nations General Assembly officially declared September 30 as International Translation Day, to raise awareness about this important work.

The important day of September 30 is celebrated in honour of Saint Jerome, who is known as the first translator of the Bible. St. Jerome translated the Bible from Greek and Hebrew into Latin and is considered the patron saint of translators. St. Jerome died on September 30, so this day was chosen in his memory.

Translation makes communication between different languages and cultures possible. It connects people from different countries and communities and promotes global dialogue. Translators help spread the richness of literature, art, and cultural heritage by translating them from one language to another. The role of translators is important in business deals, scientific research, and the dissemination of international policies.

Every year, International Translation Day features a special theme that focuses on various aspects of translation and language services. The theme for 2026 is “Linguistic Diversity and Language Rights,” with the subtitle “The Power of Being Understood”.

Translators and interpreters do not just translate languages, but they also help in understanding one culture to another. Without their hard work, communication on a global scale would be impossible. Thus, International Translation Day is a day to honour all the translators and interpreters who play a vital role in connecting the world.
