भारतीय रेल परिवहन दिवस 16 अप्रैल को मनाया जाता है. यह दिन भारतीय रेलवे के इतिहास में एक महत्वपूर्ण दिन के रूप में मनाया जाता है क्योंकि इसी दिन 1853 में भारत में पहली बार ट्रेन ने चलना शुरू किया था. यह ट्रेन मुंबई के बोरी बंदर (अब छत्रपति शिवाजी टर्मिनस) से ठाणे तक चली थी, जो कि लगभग 34 किलोमीटर की दूरी थी.
इस दिन मुंबई में ‘सार्वजनिक अवकाश’ की घोषणा की गई और रेलगाड़ी को 21 तोपों की सलामी दी गई. इस रेलगाड़ी ने यह दूरी 75 मिनट में तय की. इस पहली रेलगाड़ी में ‘फाकलैंड’ नामक भाप का इंजन लगा था और 14 डिब्बों में 400 यात्री सवार थे.
इतिहास: –
भारत में रेल की शुरुआत की कहानी अमेरिका में कपास की फसल से जुड़ी हुई है, जहां 1846 में कपास की फसल को भारी नुकसान पहुंचा था. इसके कारण ब्रिटेन के मैनचेस्टर और ग्लास्गो की कपड़ा मिलों को वैकल्पिक स्थान की तलाश करने पर विवश होना पड़ा था और भारत इनके लिए उपयुक्त स्थान था. भारत की ब्रिटिश सरकार को भी प्रशासनिक और सैन्य परिचालन की दृष्टि से रेलवे का विकास करना तर्कसंगत लग रहा था. ऐसे में 1843 में लॉर्ड डलहौजी ने भारत में रेल चलाने की संभावना तलाश करने का कार्य शुरु किया. इस उद्देश्य के लिए 1849 में ‘ग्रेट इंडियन पेनिनसुलर कंपनी कानून’ पारित हुआ और भारत में रेलवे की स्थापना का मार्ग प्रशस्त हुआ.

Indian Railway Transport Day is celebrated on 16 April. This day is celebrated as an important day in the history of Indian Railways because on this day in 1853, the train started running for the first time in India. This train ran from Bori Bunder (now Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus) in Mumbai to Thane, which was a distance of about 34 kilometers.
On this day, a ‘public holiday’ was declared in Mumbai and the train was given a 21-gun salute. This train covered this distance in 75 minutes. This first train had a steam engine named ‘Falkland’ and there were 400 passengers in 14 coaches.

The story of the beginning of railways in India is linked to the cotton crop in America, where the cotton crop suffered huge losses in 1846. Due to this, the textile mills of Manchester and Glasgow of Britain were forced to look for alternative locations and India was a suitable place for them. The British Government of India also found it logical to develop railways from the point of view of administrative and military operations. In such a situation, in 1843, Lord Dalhousie started the work of exploring the possibility of running railways in India. For this purpose, the ‘Great Indian Peninsular Company Act’ was passed in 1849 and paved the way for the establishment of railways in India.
