गिद्धोर के कुमार सुरेश सिंह की उम्र 25 साल की थी जब वे खूंटी जिले में नौजवान आइएएस अधिकारी के तौर पर सेवा देने आये थे. उसी दौरान बीरबंकी नामक गांव में उन्होंने मुंडा आदिवासियों को मुंडारी गीत गाते हुए, उस पर नृत्य करते हुए देखा-सुना. उन गीतों में बिरसा नाम अक्सर आता था. एक नौजवान अधिकारी की लगन ही थी कि कुमार ने फिर मुंडारी भाषा को सीखा तब उन्होंने, बिरसा मुंडा नामक एक नायक को सामने लाया.
कुमार सुरेश सिंह झारखंड के इलाके में न आये होते तो झारखंड का विशाल आदिवासी समाज अब भी नायकत्व की तलाश में भटकता हुआ होता. आज अगर बिरसा मुंडा आदिवासियों के चाहत, स्वतंत्रता, न्याय और अधिकार के नायक के तौर पर सामने हैं तो उसका श्रेय कुमार सुरेश सिंह को जाता है. भारतीय प्रशासनिक सेवा के अधिकारी रहे कुमार सुरेश सिंह ने बिरसा मुंडा पर एक शोध आधारित 1966 में पुस्तक लिखी थी – ‘द डस्ट-स्टॉर्म एंड द हैंगिंग मिस्ट: ए स्टडी ऑफ बिरसा मुंडा एंड हिज मूवमेंट इन छोटानागपुर,’ जिसका हिन्दी रूपांतरण है ‘बिरसा मुंडा और उनका आंदोलन’. इस किताब को पढ़कर दुनिया अचंभित हुआ. तब दुनिया ने आदिवासियों के आंदोलन को जाना. कुमार सुरेश सिंह द्वारा लिखित पुस्तक में वर्णित क्रांतिकारी गीत, मंत्र, प्रार्थनाएं सभी मुंडारी भाषा का ही हिंदी रूपांतरण, भाषांतर या अनुवादित रूप है.
एक मुंडारी गीत जो हिंदी में इस प्रकार है – ओ स्वर्ग के पिता, धरती की आवाज सुनो हम सब मिलकर दुश्मनों को घेर लेंगे हम अपनी जमीन से गोरों को भगा देंगे. हम लोगों के बीच बड़े 53 मुंडा राजा हैं ओ गोरे आदमियों, भागो, तुरंत भागो तुम्हारा घर पश्चिम में है, तुम चले ही जाओ ओ गोरे आदमियों अपनी जहरीली हवा को लिए अपने देश जाओ तुम जरूर जरूर चले जाओ’.

History of Birsa Munda…
Kumar Suresh Singh of Giddor was 25 years old when he came to serve as a young IAS officer in the Khunti district. At the same time, in a village named Birbanki, he saw and heard the Munda tribals singing Mundari songs and dancing to them. Birsa’s name often appeared in those songs. It was the passion of a young officer that Kumar learned the Mundari language again, then he brought forth a hero named Birsa Munda.
If Kumar Suresh Singh had not come to Jharkhand’s area, then the vast tribal society of Jharkhand would still be wandering in search of heroism. Today, if Birsa Munda is in front of the tribals as the hero of their desire, for freedom, justice, and rights, then the credit goes to Kumar Suresh Singh. Indian Administrative Service officer Kumar Suresh Singh wrote a research-based book on Birsa Munda in 1966 – ‘The Dust-Storm and the Hanging Mist: A Study of Birsa Munda and His Movement in Chhotanagpur’, whose Hindi translation is ‘Birsa Munda and his Movement. The world was surprised to read this book. Then the world came to know about the movement of tribals. The revolutionary songs, mantras, and prayers described in the book written by Kumar Suresh Singh are all Hindi adaptations, translations, or translated forms of the Mundari language.
A Mundari song which goes like this in Hindi – Oh father of heaven, listen to the voice of the earth, we all together will surround the enemies, we will drive away the whites from our land. There are big 53 shaved kings among us, O white men, run, run immediately, your home is in the west, you must go, O white men, take your poisonous air, go to your country, you must definitely go.
