We are talking about a woman who became the country’s first woman doctor (surgery), the first woman legislator, and the first woman deputy speaker of the Madras Legislative Council. A woman who fought for the rights of women throughout her life, as well as she cooperated extensively in the freedom struggle of the country. His name is Dr. Muthulakshmi Reddy.
Muthulakshmi Reddy was born on this day in the year 1886 in Pudukottai (Tamil Nadu). His father’s name was Narayan Swamy Iyer and his mother’s name was Chandramai Devdasi. Muthulakshmi’s father was a professor at Maharaja’s College while her mother Chandramai was from the Devadasi community. Muthulakshmi also had to face a lot of difficulties to study since childhood. Her father and some teachers taught her at home and she also topped the examination. Facing all the difficulties, Muthulakshmi did not disappoint her parents but became the first female doctor in the country. Muthulakshmi Reddy was the first Indian girl in the department of surgery at the Madras Medical College. He topped surgery in college and won a gold medal. He also fought for the liberation and empowerment of women. In the year 1914, she married Dr. T. Sundar Reddy with one condition.
Got a chance to meet Congress leader and freedom fighter Sarojini Naidu during his medical training. After that, he vowed to fight for the rights of women and the independence of the country. Muthulakshmi Reddy also had the distinction of becoming the country’s first woman legislator from the Madras Legislative Council in the year 1927. In the year 1956, she was also awarded the Padma Bhushan for her work for society. In the year 1986, on the birth date of Muthulakshmi, a postal stamp was also released in her memory.

डॉ० मुत्तुलक्ष्मी रेड्डी…
एक ऐसी महिला के बारे में बात कर रहें है जो देश की पहली महिला चिकित्सक (सर्जरी), पहली महिला विधायक और मद्रास विधान परिषद की पहली महिला उपाध्यक्ष बनी थीं.साथ ही बताते चलें कि वो लड़कों के स्कूल में प्रवेश लेने वाली देश की पहली महिला थीं. एक ऐसी महिला जो जीवन पर्यंत महिलाओं के अधिकार के लिए लड़तीं रहीं साथ ही देश की आज़ादी की लड़ाई में भी उन्होंने बढ़-चढ़कर सहयोग दिया. उनका नाम है डॉक्टर मुत्तुलक्ष्मी रेड्डी.
मुत्तुलक्ष्मी रेड्डी का जन्म आज ही के दिन वर्ष 1886 को पुडुकोट्टई (तमिलनाडु ) में हुआ था. उनके पिता नारायण स्वामी अय्यर और माता का नाम चंद्रामाई देवदासी. मुत्तुलक्ष्मी के पिता महाराजा कॉलेज में प्राध्यापक थे जबकि उनकी माता चंद्रामाई देवदासी समुदाय से थीं. मुत्तुलक्ष्मी को भी बचपन से ही पढ़ने के लिए काफी कठिनाइयों का सामना करना पड़ा. उनके पिता और कुछ शिक्षकों ने उन्हें घर पर ही पढ़ाया और वो परीक्षा में अव्वल भी रहीं. तमाम परेशानियों का सामना करते हुए मुत्तुलक्ष्मी ने अपने माता-पिता को निराश नहीं किया बल्कि देश की पहली महिला डॉक्टर बनीं. मुथुलक्ष्मी रेड्डी मद्रास मेडिकल कॉलेज में सर्जरी विभाग में पहली भारतीय लड़की थीं. उन्होंने कॉलेज में सर्जरी में टॉप किया और गोल्ड मेडल जीता था.उन्होंने महिलाओं की मुक्ति और सशक्तीकरण के लिए लड़ाई भी लड़ी. वर्ष 1914 में उन्होंने डॉक्टर टी. सुंदर रेड्डी से एक शर्त के साथ विवाह किया.
अपनी मेडिकल ट्रेनिंग के दौरानकांग्रेस नेता और स्वतन्त्रता सेनानी सरोजिनी नायडू से मिलने का मौका मिला. उसके बाद उन्होंने महिलाओं के अधिकारों और देश की आजादी के लिए लड़ने की कसम खाई. मुत्तुलक्ष्मी रेड्डी को वर्ष 1927 में मद्रास लेजिस्लेटिव काउंसिल से देश की पहली महिला विधायक बनने का गौरव भी हासिल हुआ.वर्ष 1956 में उन्हें समाज के लिए किये गए अपने कार्यों के लिए पद्मभूषण से भी सम्मानित किया गया. वर्ष 1986 को मुथुलक्ष्मी की जन्मतिथि पर उनकी स्मृति में एक डाक टिकट भी जारी किया.
