International Teachers’ Day

In a land steeped in tradition, the teacher is accorded a status even higher than that of the Divine, for it is the teacher who dispels the darkness of ignorance and spreads the light of knowledge. Teachers and mentors play a role akin to the *Trimurti* (Brahma, Vishnu, and Mahesh) in shaping our lives.

While International Teachers’ Day is celebrated globally on October 5th, Teachers’ Day in India is observed on September 5th. The primary objective of International Teachers’ Day is to draw the global community’s attention to the contributions, social roles, rights, and working conditions of teachers, as well as the quality of education.

International Teachers’ Day was inaugurated on October 5, 1994, by UNESCO and its partner organizations. It commemorates the 1966 conference held in Paris, where a joint recommendation by UNESCO and the International Labour Organization regarding the status of teachers was adopted—an initiative aimed at honoring the work, contributions, and rights of teachers worldwide.

The progress of any nation rests upon its human capital, and teachers play a pivotal role in developing that capital. A teacher is instrumental in shaping an innocent child and refining their personality, acting as a guide, counselor, motivator, facilitator, and conductor of the learning process.

In today’s modern and virtual era, the role of teachers is becoming increasingly complex compared to the past. While the internet, artificial intelligence, digital education, and social media have made access to knowledge easier, the significance, role, and nature of teaching have also evolved. Today, a teacher’s primary task is not merely to dictate “what to study,” but to teach students how to find accurate information, verify its credibility, and utilize it judiciously.

Teachers across the globe face numerous challenges. For instance, beyond actual teaching, teachers face additional pressures from administrative tasks, evaluation duties, and other responsibilities; the need for continuous training to keep pace with evolving technology and new pedagogical methods; and the rising expectations of students, parents, institutions, and society.

In the context of India—a vast and diverse nation—ensuring equal educational opportunities amidst linguistic, economic, social, and geographical diversity poses a significant challenge. The National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 has emphasized making education more holistic, multidisciplinary, skill-based, and student-centric. Teachers play a pivotal role in the successful implementation of such an educational system.

In this era of the virtual world, digital technology has unlocked unprecedented possibilities in education. While online classes, digital libraries, educational apps, virtual laboratories, and AI-based tools can make learning more accessible, it is the teacher who can directly understand a student’s emotional state, instill self-confidence, recognize their talent, and guide them through difficult situations. Education is a powerful tool for reducing social inequalities, and a teacher is someone who focuses specifically on a student’s capabilities and potential.

Teachers are not merely individuals who deliver the curriculum; they are guides, sources of inspiration, and mentors who shape our character. They teach us not only mathematics, science, or languages but also life values, discipline, and ethics. A good teacher helps cultivate self-confidence, curiosity, and critical thinking skills in their students. International Teachers’ Day offers an occasion to deeply appreciate the global importance of education and acknowledge the unique role teachers play in nation-building. This day provides us with an opportunity to express gratitude to our mentors and honor the knowledge they have imparted.
