विश्व स्वास्थ्य संगठन (WHO) के अनुसार, मनुष्यों में होने वाली सभी संक्रामक बीमारियों में से लगभग 60% से अधिक ज़ूनोटिक होती हैं, और 75% से अधिक नई या उभरती हुई संक्रामक बीमारियाँ जानवरों से उत्पन्न होती हैं. हाल के वर्षों में हमने कोविड-19 जैसी महामारियों का अनुभव किया है, जो ज़ूनोटिक मूल की थीं. ये बीमारियाँ सार्वजनिक स्वास्थ्य, पशु स्वास्थ्य और पर्यावरण पर गहरा प्रभाव डालती हैं.
