भारत के पूर्वी समुद्र तट पर स्थित ओड़िशा राज्य 86 वां स्थापना दिवस के रूप में ‘उत्कल दिवस’ मना रहा है. ओड़िशा अपनी समृद्ध साहित्यिक और सांस्कृतिक धरोहरों की धरती है. यह छत्तीसगढ़, झारखंड, बंगाल और आंध्रप्रदेश का भी पड़ोसी राज्य है. उत्कल भूमि बंगाल की खाड़ी में पुरी के समुद्र तट पर विराजमान महाप्रभु श्री जगन्नाथजी की छत्रछाया में एक लाख 55 हज़ार 707 वर्ग किलोमीटर में विस्तारित है. यह राज्य आज ही के दिन एक अप्रैल 1936 को ‘उड़ीसा’ के नाम से अस्तित्व में आया था.
इस प्रदेश का नाम 65 साल बाद वर्ष 2011 में ‘उड़ीसा’ से बदलकर “ओड़िशा’ कर दिया गया. यह हमारे देश के महान क्रांतिकारी, स्वतंत्रता सेनानी और आज़ाद हिन्द फ़ौज के संस्थापक नेताजी सुभाषचंद्र बोस की जन्म स्थली भी है. कटक में उनका जन्म हुआ था. स्वतंत्रता संग्राम के दिनों में महान कवि, लेखक और समाजसेवी स्वर्गीय मधुसूदन दास ने ही आधुनिक ओड़िशा राज्य की परिकल्पना की थी. उन्होंने अलग उत्कल प्रदेश निर्माण के लिए जनता को संगठित कर ‘उत्कल सम्मेलनी’ की भी स्थापना की और इस संस्था के माध्यम से राज्य निर्माण के लिए प्रबल जनमत का निर्माण किया.
फलस्वरूप तत्कालीन ब्रिटिश प्रशासन ने एक अप्रैल 1936 को बिहार प्रान्त से अलग करके ओड़िशा राज्य का गठन किया. लेकिन तब तक मधुसूदन दास अपने सपनों के ओड़िशा को पृथक राज्य के रूप में देखने के लिए दुनिया में नहीं थे. उनका जन्म 28 अप्रैल 1848 को हुआ था और ओड़िशा राज्य बनने के लगभग 2 साल पहले 4 फरवरी 1934 को उनका निधन हो गया. बहरहाल, उनके सपनों का ओड़िशा अपनी 4 करोड़ 19 लाख से अधिक जनसँख्या के साथ आधुनिक और स्वतंत्र भारत के प्रगतिशील राज्य के रूप में विकास के पथ पर निरन्तर अग्रसर है.
यह सहज, सरल, सौम्य और धर्मप्राण लोगों का प्रदेश है, जहाँ के हर जन -मन में और कण -कण में भगवान जगन्नाथ जी की महिमा व्याप्त है. मधुसूदन दास के अलावा गंगाधर मेहेर और गोपबन्धु दास जैसे अनेक प्रसिद्ध कवियों ने देश के सांस्कृतिक मानचित्र पर ओड़िशा को पहचान और प्रतिष्ठा दिलाई है. (स्वराज करुण ) छत्तीसगढ़, झारखण्ड, बंगाल और आंध्रप्रदेश राज्यों का पड़ोसी होने के कारण ओड़िशा के सीमावर्ती जन-जीवन पर इन राज्यों की संस्कृति का भी असर देखा जा सकता है, वहीं इन चारों राज्यों की सीमाओं पर भी उत्कल संस्कृति का गहरा प्रभाव नज़र आता है.
उत्कल संस्कृति वास्तव में जगन्नाथ संस्कृति है. पुरी के भगवान जगन्नाथ सम्पूर्ण भारत के आराध्य देवता हैं. बहन सुभद्रा और भ्राता बलभद्र जी के साथ हर साल आषाढ़ शुक्ल द्वितीय को उनकी ऐतिहासिक रथयात्रा न सिर्फ़ ओड़िशा बल्कि भारत के सभी राज्यों में धूमधाम से मनायी जाती है.

As a result, on April 1, 1936, the then-British administration separated it from Bihar province and formed the state of Odisha. But till then Madhusudan Das was not in the world to see his dream of Odisha as a separate state. He was born on 28 April 1848 and died on 4 February 1934, almost 2 years before the formation of Odisha state. However, the Odisha of his dreams with its population of more than 4 crores 19 lakhs is continuously progressing on the path of development as a progressive state of modern and independent India.
This is the state of easy, simple, gentle, and pious people, where the glory of Lord Jagannath ji prevails in every mind and every particle. Apart from Madhusudan Das, many famous poets like Gangadhar Meher and Gopabandhu Das have brought recognition and prestige to Odisha on the cultural map of the country.
