विश्व प्रेस स्वतंत्रता दिवस के अवसर पर ‘पोजीशन एंड डायरेक्शन ऑफ जर्नलिज्म’ विषय पर एक परिचर्चा कार्यक्रम में बोलते हुए केकेएम कॉलेज के सहायक प्राचार्य डॉ. गौरी शंकर पासवान ने कहा कि प्रेस की स्वतंत्रता और निष्पक्षता लोकतंत्र का प्राण है. यह समाज का आईना है. प्रेस की स्वतंत्रता इस बात के प्रमाण हैं, कि किसी देश में अभिव्यक्ति की कितनी आजादी है. पत्रकारिता और प्रेस में बिल्कुल स्वतंत्रता होनी चाहिए, तभी हमारा देश सच्चे अर्थों में लोकतंत्र साबित हो सकेगा. स्वतंत्र मीडिया लोकतंत्र का महत्वपूर्ण स्ट्रक्चर है, क्योंकि यह सच की आवाज को उजागर करता है तथा भ्रष्टाचार के विरुद्ध आवाज को देश दुनिया के कोने कोने तक फैला कर जन-जन को जागरूक बनाता है.
उन्होंने कहा कि स्वतंत्र प्रेस विकसित और सभ्य देश की निशानी है. मीडिया में वह ताकत होती है, जो किसी मदर बम, फादर बम गोले और बारूद में भी नहीं होती है. चीन, पाकिस्तान, जापान और जर्मनी में प्रेस को आजादी नहीं है. सरकार का सीधा नियंत्रण है. इस लिहाज से महारा देश भारत बहुत ठीक है. प्रेस स्वतंत्रता के अभाव में हम लोकतंत्र की कल्पना नहीं कर सकते, स्वतंत्र मीडिया सशक्त जनतंत्र की प्राथमिक शर्त है. आज विश्व के करीब 50 देशों में प्रेस परिषद है. प्रतिवर्ष 3 मई को प्रेस स्वतंत्रता दिवस मनाया जाता है. स्वतंत्र देश के लाभ को देखते हुए संयुक्त राष्ट्र संघ की आम सभा ने 1993 में 3 मार्च को प्रेस स्वतंत्रता दिवस मनाने की घोषणा की थी.
प्रेस स्वतंत्रता दिवस मीडियाकर्मियों और पत्रकारों में सुरक्षा की भावना भरता है और उनसे सही सूचना प्रकाशित करने की गुहार लगाता है. प्रेस की स्वतंत्रता और जिम्मेदारियों की ओर पत्रकारों का ध्यान आकृष्ट करता है. मीडिया भ्रष्ट नेताओं और अंडरवर्ल्ड के लोगों का हौसला पस्त करता है. आज पहले की अपेक्षा प्रेस की स्थिति में महत्वपूर्ण परिवर्तन हुआ है. स्वतंत्रता आंदोलन के समय से मीडिया सही दिशा में चलने और कार्य करने का प्रयत्न कर रही है. यह प्रेस स्वतंत्रता कभी-कभी पत्रकारों और प्रकाशकों पर भारी पड़ जाता है. अनावश्यक रूप से उन्हें प्रताड़ित किया जाता है. उन पर मुकदमा किया जाता है. उन पर तरह-तरह के जुल्म ढाए जाते हैं. पत्रकारिता के साथ इस तरह की घटनाएं लोकतंत्र को कमजोर करती है.

Speaking in a discussion program on the topic ‘Position and Direction of Journalism’ on the occasion of World Press Freedom Day, Dr. Gauri Shankar Paswan, Assistant Principal of KKM College, said that the freedom and impartiality of the press is the soul of democracy. It is the mirror of the society. Freedom of the press is proof of how much freedom of expression is there in a country. There should be absolute freedom in journalism and the press, only then our country can prove to be a democracy in the true sense. Independent media is an important structure of democracy because it exposes the voice of truth and makes people aware by spreading the voice against corruption to every corner of the country and the world.
He said that the free press is a sign of a developed and civilized country. Media has that power, which is not even in any mother bomb, father bomb shells, and gunpowder. There is no freedom of the press in China, Pakistan, Japan, and Germany. The government has direct control. In this context, Mahara country India is very good. We cannot imagine democracy in the absence of press freedom, free media is the primary condition of a strong democracy. Today there are press councils in about 50 countries of the world. Press Freedom Day is celebrated every year on 3rd May. In view of the benefits of an independent country, the General Assembly of the United Nations announced in 1993 that March 3 would be celebrated as Press Freedom Day.
Press Freedom Day fills the media persons and journalists with a sense of security and urges them to publish correct information. Attracts the attention of journalists toward the freedom and responsibilities of the press. The media demoralizes corrupt politicians and the people of the underworld. Today there has been a significant change in the condition of the press as compared to earlier. Since the time of the freedom movement, the media has been trying to walk and work in the right direction. This press freedom sometimes takes a toll on journalists and publishers. They are unnecessarily harassed. They are sued. Various kinds of atrocities are perpetrated on them. Such incidents with journalism weaken democracy.
