आज एक ऐसे कलाकार के बारे में बात कर रहें हैं जिन्हें आज भी लोग उनकी ख़ास शैली के कारण जानते हैं. एक ऐसा कलाकार जिनकी ख़ास शैली के कारण उस दौर के अभिनेताओं की छुट्टी हो गई थी. बताते चलें कि वर्तमान समय तक उनके जैसे किरदार दूसरा कोई भी नहीं निभा पाया. उस कलाकार का वास्तविक नाम है शमशेर राज कपूर जिन्हें हम सभी शम्मी कपूर के नाम से जानते हैं.
शम्मी कपूर का जन्म 21 अक्टूबर, 1931 को मुम्बई ( महाराष्ट्र) में थिएटर कलाकार पृथ्वीराज कपूर के दुसरे पुत्र थे. पृथ्वीराज कपूर को भारतीय जन नाट्य संघ (इप्टा) के संस्थापक सदस्यों में से एक होने का भी गौरव हासिल है उनकी माता का नाम रामसरनी ‘रमा’ मेहरा था. शम्मी कपूर के परिवार में पत्नी नीला देवी, बेटा आदित्य राज और बेटी कंचन देसाई हैं. शम्मी ने भी अपनी कैरियर की शुरुआत वर्ष 1953 में फ़िल्म ‘ज्योति जीवन’ से अपनी अभिनय पारी की शुरुआत की.
शम्मी कपूर रुपहले पर्दे पर तब अपने अभिनय की शुरुआत की, जब उनके बड़े भाई राज कपूर के साथ ही देव आनंद और दिलीप कुमार छाए हुए थे. पारिवारिक पृष्ठभूमि होने के बावजूद भी शम्मी को फ़िल्म जगत में अपनी जगह बनाने में असफल रहें. पहले दौर में उन्होंने कई फिल्में की जैसे – रेल का डिब्बा, शमा परवाना और हम सब चोर हैं. उनकी शुरुआती दौर की फ़िल्में बॉक्स ऑफिस पर फ्लॉप रहीं.
शम्मी के सफलता का श्रेय उनके नए लुक को जाता है. उन्होंने पचास के दशक में ‘डक-टेल’ शैली में अपने बाल कटवाकर ‘तुमसा नहीं देखा’ के साथ खुद को नए लुक में पेश किया और सफलता उनके कदम चूमने लगी. वर्ष 1961 में फ़िल्म ‘जंगली’ की सफलता के साथ ही पूरा दशक उनकी फ़िल्मों के नाम रहा. इस फ़िल्म के बाद ही वह सभी प्रकार की फ़िल्मों में एक नृत्य कलाकार के रूप में अपनी छवि बनाने में कामयाब रहे.’जंगली’ फ़िल्म का गीत ‘याहू’ दर्शकों को खूब पसंद आया…

‘भारत के एल्विस प्रेसली’ कहे जाने वाले शम्मी कपूर सिर्फ किरदार ही नहीं वो खुद भी जिंदादिल इंसान थे. बताते चलें कि, शम्मी बड़े शौकीन मिज़ाज थे. वो तरह-तरह की गाड़ियाँ चलाने का शौक़ रखते थे साथ ही शाम को गोल्फ़ खेलना, समय के साथ चलना वे बख़ूबी जानते थे. यहां तक की इंटरनेट की दुनिया में आगे रहते थे. ज्ञात है कि, जब शम्मी का कैरियर बुलंदियों के दौर पर था उस दौरान उनकी पत्नी गीता बाली का निधन हो गया. उस वक्त उनके कदम कुछ ठिठके ज़रूर थे पर फ़िल्मी पर्दे के रंगरेज़ अपने उसी अंदाज़ में अभिनय से लोगों को मदमस्त करते रहे.
समय के साथ और बढ़ते मोटापे के कारण शम्मी कपूर चरित्र अभिनेता के रूप में फ़िल्मों में काम करते रहे. उन्होंने ‘मनोरंजन’ और ‘बंडलबाज’ नामक दो फ़िल्मों का निर्देशन भी किया. अपनी ख़ास शैली के कारण लोकप्रिय रहे शम्मी कपूर ने 14 अगस्त, 2011 को ब्रीज कैंडी अस्पताल (मुंबई ) में अंतिम सांस ली.

वर्ष 1968 में फ़िल्म ‘ब्रह्मचारी’ के लिए उन्हें सर्वश्रेष्ठ अभिनेता का फ़िल्म फेयर पुरस्कार भी मिला था.
वर्ष 1982 में ‘विधाता’ फ़िल्म के लिए श्रेष्ठ सहायक अभिनेता का पुरस्कार मिला.
वर्ष 1995 में फ़िल्म फेयर लाइफ़ टाइम अचीवमेंट अवार्ड मिला.
वर्ष 1999 में ज़ी सिने लाइफ़ टाइम अचीवमेंट अवार्ड से सम्मानित किये गये.
वर्ष 2001 में स्टार स्क्रीन लाइफ़ टाइम अचीवमेंट पुरस्कार से नवाजे गये.

Shammi Kapoor
Today we’re talking about an artist who is still known for his distinctive style. An artist whose unique style made the actors of his era lose their jobs. It’s worth noting that no one else has been able to portray characters like him to this day. The real name of that artist is Shams her Raj Kapoor, whom we all know as Shammi Kapoor.
Shammi Kapoor was born on October 21, 1931, in Mumbai (Maharashtra), the second son of theater artist Prithviraj Kapoor. Prithviraj Kapoor also holds the distinction of being one of the founding members of the Indian People’s Theatre Association (IPTA). His mother was Ramsarni ‘Rama’ Mehra. Shammi Kapoor’s family includes his wife Neela Devi, son Aditya Raj, and daughter Kanchan Desai. Shammi also began his acting career in 1953 with the film ‘Jyoti Jeevan’.
Shammi Kapoor made his acting debut on the silver screen when his elder brother Raj Kapoor, along with Dev Anand and Dilip Kumar, were still in the limelight. Despite his family background, Shammi failed to establish himself in the film industry. In his early days, he appeared in several films, such as Rail Ka Dibba, Shama Parwana, and Humsab Chor Hain. His early films flopped at the box office.
Shammi’s success is attributed to his new look. In the 1950s, he cut his hair into a duck-tail style and presented himself with a new look in “Tumsa Nahin Dekha,” and success followed. With the success of the 1961 film “Junglee,” the entire decade was dominated by his films. It was after this film that he established himself as a dancer in all genres. Dubbed “India’s Elvis Presley,” Shammi Kapoor was not just a character, but a lively person. Shammi was a very avid traveler. He loved to drive various cars and play golf in the evenings. He knew how to keep up with the times. He was even ahead of the curve in the internet world. It is known that Shammi’s wife, Geeta Bali, passed away when his career was at its peak. While his career was somewhat hampered at that time, the silver screen’s star continued to captivate audiences with his acting.
Over time, and due to his increasing obesity, Shammi Kapoor continued to work as a character actor. He also directed two films, “Manoranjan” and “Bandalbaaz.” Popular for his distinctive style, Shammi Kapoor breathed his last on August 14, 2011, at Breach Candy Hospital in Mumbai.
