गुड फ्राइडे, जिसे पवित्र शुक्रवार या ग्रेट फ्राइडे, ‘होली फ्राइडे और ‘ब्लैक फ्राइडे’ के नाम से भी जाना जाता है. यह ईसाइयों का प्रमुख धार्मिक पर्व है, जो यीशु मसीह की मृत्यु और उनके बलिदान की याद में मनाया जाता है. यह दिन ईसा मसीह (यीशु) के सूली पर चढ़ाए जाने और उनकी मृत्यु की स्मृति में मनाया जाता है. इसे हर साल ईस्टर संडे से पहले आने वाले शुक्रवार को मनाया जाता है.
गुड फ्राइडे हर वर्ष मार्च या अप्रैल में पड़ता है. यह तिथि ईस्टर संडे (यीशु के पुनरुत्थान का दिन) के आधार पर निर्धारित होती है. ईस्टर संडे चंद्र कैलेंडर के अनुसार गणना की जाती है और यह वसंत ऋतु में पहले पूर्णिमा के बाद आने वाले रविवार को मनाया जाता है. गुड फ्राइडे इसी रविवार से पहले आने वाला शुक्रवार होता है.
बाइबिल के अनुसार, यीशु मसीह को उनके एक शिष्य यहूदा इश्करियोती ने धोखे से रोमन सैनिकों के हवाले कर दिया था. यहूदा ने यीशु को एक चुंबन के साथ पहचान दिलाकर गिरफ्तार करवाया. यीशु पर ईश-निंदा और राजद्रोह का आरोप लगाया गया और उन्हें पोंटियस पाइलट (रोमन गवर्नर) के सामने पेश किया गया. हालाँकि पाइलट को यीशु में कोई दोष नहीं दिखा, लेकिन भीड़ के दबाव में उन्होंने यीशु को सूली पर चढ़ाने की सजा सुना दी.
यीशु को क्रॉस (सूली) पर ले जाया गया और उनके हाथ-पैरों में कीलें ठोंक दी गईं. करीब छह घंटे तक सूली पर लटकने के बाद, यीशु ने अपने प्राण त्याग दिए. उनकी मृत्यु के समय आकाश में अंधेरा छा गया और पृथ्वी काँप उठी. ईसाई मान्यता के अनुसार, यीशु ने अपनी मृत्यु से मानव जाति के पापों का प्रायश्चित किया और उन्हें मोक्ष का मार्ग दिखाया.
इस दिन, चर्चों में विशेष प्रार्थना सभाएं होती हैं. श्रद्धालु प्रार्थना करते हैं और उनके बलिदान को याद करते हुए मौन व्रत और उपवास करते हैं. कई जगहों पर लोग ‘वे ऑफ क्रॉस’ का पुनः निर्माण करते हैं, जिसमें वे उस यात्रा को दोहराते हैं, जो यीशु ने क्रूस लेकर की थी. चर्च की घंटियाँ नहीं बजाई जातीं और संगीत भी शांत रहता है. इस दिन चर्च में “वे ऑफ द क्रॉस” (क्रॉस का मार्ग) नामक प्रार्थना सभा आयोजित की जाती है, जिसमें यीशु के क्रॉस तक जाने के 14 पड़ावों को दर्शाया जाता है.
“परमेश्वर ने जगत से ऐसा प्रेम रखा कि उसने अपना इकलौता पुत्र दे दिया, ताकि जो कोई उस पर विश्वास करे, वह नाश न हो, परन्तु अनन्त जीवन पाए।”— बाइबिल (यूहन्ना 3:16).
गुड फ्राइडे आत्म-चिंतन और कृतज्ञता का समय है. यह दिन यीशु मसीह के उस महान त्याग को याद कराता है, जिसने मानवता को पाप से मुक्ति दिलाई. यह न केवल ईसाइयों बल्कि सभी मनुष्यों के लिए सहनशीलता, करुणा और आत्मबलिदान का संदेश देता है.

Jesus was taken to the cross, and nails were hammered into his hands and feet. After hanging on the cross for about six hours, Jesus gave up his life. At the time of his death, the sky became dark and the earth trembled. According to Christian belief, Jesus atoned for the sins of mankind by his death and showed them the path to salvation.
On this day, special prayer meetings are held in churches. Devotees pray and observe silent fasts and vows of remembrance of his sacrifice. In many places, people recreate the ‘Way of the Cross’, in which they repeat the journey that Jesus made carrying the cross. Church bells are not played, and the music is muted. On this day, a prayer service called “Way of the Cross” is held in the church, which depicts the 14 stages of Jesus’ walk to the cross.
