- कटवा की लड़ाई:- आज ही के दिन वर्ष 1763 में बंगाल के नवाब मीर कासिम को कटवा की लड़ाई में ब्रिटिश सेना ने बुरी तरह पराजित किया था.
- मंगल पांडे:- आज ही के दिन वर्ष 1827 में स्वतंत्रता संग्राम के अग्रदूत मंगल पांडे का जन्म उत्तर प्रदेश के बलिया जिले के नगवा नामक गांव में एक “ब्राह्मण” परिवार में हुआ था. इनके पिता का नाम दिवाकर पांडे था. ब्राह्मण” होने के कारण मंगल पाण्डेय वर्ष 1849 में 22 साल की उम्र में ब्रिटिश ईस्ट इंडिया कंपनी की सेना में बंगाल नेटिव इन्फेंट्री की 34वी बटालियन में भर्ती किये गए, जिसमें ज्यादा संख्या में ब्राह्मणो को भर्ती की जाती थी. मंगल पाण्डेय ने अपने साथियों को खुलेआम विद्रोह करने के लिये कहा पर किसी के ना मानने पर उन्होने अपनी बंदूक से अपनी प्राण लेने का प्रयास किया.
- मुस्लिम नेता ख़्वाजा नजीमुद्दीन:- आज ही के दिन वर्ष 1894 में बंगाल के मुस्लिम नेता ख़्वाजा नजीमुद्दीन का जन्म ढाका वर्तमान बंगला देश में एक सम्पन्न ज़मींदार परिवार में हुआ था. उन्होंने अलीगढ़ और इंग्लैंड में शिक्षा प्राप्त की थी. ‘मुस्लिम लीग’ में सम्मिलित होकर नज़ीमुद्दीन ने अपना सार्वजनिक जीवन आरंभ किया. वर्ष 1935 के शासन सुधारों के अंतर्गत प्रदेशों में चुनाव हुए, तो बंगाल में मुस्लिम लीग के स्थान पर फ़जलुल हक़ की ‘कृषक प्रजा पार्टी’ ने अधिक स्थान प्राप्त किए. वर्ष 1946 में लीग को वहाँ पूर्ण बहुमत मिला और विभाजन के बाद भी नज़ीमुद्दीन ही पूर्वी बंगाल के पहले मुख्यमंत्री बने.
- बंगाल के विभाजन:- आज ही के दिन वर्ष 1905 में ब्रिटिश भारत सरकार ने बंगाल के विभाजन को लागू करने के निर्णय की घोषणा की थी. ज्ञात है कि, बंगाल विभाजन के निर्णय की घोषणा भारत के तत्कालीन वाइसराय कर्जन के द्वारा किया गया था. एक मुस्लिम बहुल प्रान्त का सृजन करने के उद्देश्य से ही भारत के बंगाल को दो भागों में बाँट दिये जाने का निर्णय लिया गया था.
- कवियित्री नालापत बालमणि अम्मा:- आज ही के दिन वर्ष 1909 में मलयालम भाषा की प्रसिद्ध कवियित्री नालापत बालमणि अम्मा का जन्म केरल के मालाबार ज़िले के पुन्नायुर्कुलम में हुआ था. उनके पिता का नाम पिता चित्तंजूर कुंज्जण्णि राजा और माता का नाम नालापत कूचुकुट्टी अम्मा था. उनका जन्म एक रूढ़िवादी परिवार में हुआ, जहां लड़कियों को विद्यालय भेजना अनुचित माना जाता था. इसलिए उनके लिए घर में शिक्षक की व्यवस्था कर दी गयी थी, जिनसे उन्होंने संस्कृत और मलयालम भाषा सीखी. नालापत बालमणि अम्मा केरल की राष्ट्रवादी साहित्यकार थीं. उन्होंने राष्ट्रीय उद्बोधन वाली कविताओं की रचना की. वे मुख्यतः वात्सल्य, ममता, मानवता के कोमल भाव की कवयित्री के रूप में विख्यात हैं। फिर भी स्वतंत्रतारूपी दीपक की उष्ण लौ से भी वे अछूती नहीं रहीं. वर्ष 1929-1939 के बीच लिखी उनकी कविताओं में देशभक्ति, गाँधी का प्रभाव, स्वतंत्रता की चाह स्पष्ट परिलक्षित होती है.
- दिनेश सिंह:- आज ही के दिन वर्ष 1925 में द्वितीय से नौवीं लोकसभा के सदस्य दिनेश सिंह का जन्म हुआ था.
- खगोल भौतिकविद जयंत नार्लीकर:- आज ही के दिन वर्ष 1938 में भारतीय खगोल भौतिकविद जयंत नार्लीकर का जन्म कोल्हापुर (महाराष्ट्र) में हुआ था. उनके पिता विष्णु वासुदेव नार्लीकर बनारस हिन्दू विश्वविद्यालय में गणित के अध्यापक थे तथा माँ संस्कृत की विदुषी थीं. नार्लीकर की प्रारम्भिक शिक्षा वाराणसी में हुई. बनारस हिन्दू विश्वविद्यालय से स्नातक की उपाधि लेने के बाद वे कैम्ब्रिज विश्वविद्यालय चले गये. उन्होने कैम्ब्रिज से गणित की उपाधि ली और खगोल-शास्त्र एवं खगोल-भौतिकी में दक्षता प्राप्त की. वर्ष 1970 के दशक में नार्लीकर भारतवर्ष वापस लौट आये और टाटा मूलभूत अनुसंधान संस्थान में कार्य करने लगे. वर्ष 1988 में विश्वविद्यालय अनुदान आयोग के द्वारा उन्हे खगोलशास्त्र एवं खगोलभौतिकी अन्तरविश्वविद्यालय केन्द्र स्थापित करने का कार्य सौपा गया.
- भूतपूर्व 39वें मुख्य न्यायाधीश अल्तमस कबीर:- आज ही के दिन वर्ष 1948 में भारत के भूतपूर्व 39वें मुख्य न्यायाधीश अल्तमस कबीर का जन्म हुआ था.
- क्रिकेट खिलाड़ी रोजर बिन्नी:- आज ही के दिन वर्ष 1955 में क्रिकेट खिलाड़ी रोजर बिन्नी का जन्म बैंगलोर, मैसूर के एक स्कॉटिश मूल के एंग्लो-इंडियन परिवार में हुआ हुआ था. रोजर बिन्नी भारत के पूर्व भारतीय ऑलराउंडर है जो देश के पहले ऐसे एंग्लो-इंडियन क्रिकेटर हैं जो वर्ष 1983 में विश्व कप जीतने वाली इंडियन क्रिकेट टीम के मुख्य सदस्य रह चुके है. रोजर एक आलराउंडर बल्लेबाज और एक अच्छे फील्डर थे, लेकिन उन्हें उनकी बोल्लिंग ने ही भारतीय टीम में बनाए रखा. मैच में गेंद को दोनों तरह से स्विंग करने की उनकी क्षमता टीम के लिए रामबाण थी.
- पत्रकार एवं लेखक हर्षा भोगले:- आज ही के दिन वर्ष 1961 में पत्रकार एवं लेखक हर्षा भोगले का जन्म हैदराबाद के एक मराठी भाषी परिवार में हुआ था. भोगले ने अपने कैरियर की शुरुआत APCA के क्रिकेट खिलाडी के तौर पर की और छोटे स्तर की क्रिकेट में हिस्सा लिया. उन्होंने हैदराबाद में रहते हुए 19 साल की उम्र में आकाशवाणी में कमेंट्री की शुरुआत की. वर्ष 1991-92 में वे ऑस्ट्रेलियाई ब्राडकास्टिंग कारपोरेशन के तरफ से भारत के क्रिकेट सीरीज के दौरान आमंत्रित किये जाने वाले पहले भारतीय क्रिकेट कमेंटेटर बने.
- बैंकों का राष्ट्रीयकरण:- आज ही के दिन वर्ष 1969 में भारत सरकार ने देश के 14 बड़े बैंकों का राष्ट्रीयकरण करने का निर्णय लिया गया था. इंदिरा गांधी, जो उस समय प्रधान मंत्री और वित्त मंत्री दोनों थीं, ने देश के 14 सबसे बड़े निजी बैंकों का राष्ट्रीयकरण करने का निर्णय लिया.

- Battle of Katwa: – On this day in the year 1763, Nawab Mir Kasim of Bengal was badly defeated by the British army in the Battle of Katwa.
- Mangal Pandey: – On this day in the year 1827, Mangal Pandey, the pioneer of the freedom struggle, was born in a “Brahmin” family in a village named Nagwa in the Ballia district of Uttar Pradesh. His father’s name was Diwakar Pandey. Being a “Brahmin”, Mangal Pandey was recruited in the year 1849 at the age of 22 in the 34th Battalion of the Bengal Native Infantry in the British East India Company’s army, in which a large number of Brahmins were recruited. Openly asked to revolt, but when no one agreed, he tried to take his own life with his gun.
- Muslim leader Khwaja Nazimuddin: – On this day in the year 1894, the Muslim leader of Bengal Khwaja Nazimuddin was born in a wealthy Zamindar family in present-day Dhaka, Bangladesh. He was educated in Aligarh and England. Nazimuddin started his public life by joining the ‘Muslim League’. Under the governance reforms of 1935, when elections were held in the provinces, in place of the Muslim League in Bengal, Fazlul Haq’s ‘Krishak Praja Party’ got more seats. In the year 1946, the League got an absolute majority there and even after partition, Nazimuddin became the first Chief Minister of East Bengal.
- Partition of Bengal: – On this day in the year 1905, the British Government of India announced the decision to implement the partition of Bengal. It is known that the decision to partition Bengal was announced by the then Viceroy of India, Curzon. The decision to divide India’s Bengal into two parts was taken for the purpose of creating a Muslim-majority province.
- Poetess Nalapat Balamani Amma:- On this day in the year 1909, famous Malayalam poetess Nalapat Balamani Amma was born in Punnayurkulam in the Malabar district of Kerala. His father’s name was Pita Chittanjur Kunjjanni Raja and his mother’s name was Nalapat Koochukutty Amma. He was born in a conservative family, where it was considered inappropriate to send girls to school. That’s why a teacher was arranged for him at home, from whom he learned Sanskrit and Malayalam languages. Nalapat Balamani Amma was a nationalist litterateur from Kerala. He composed poems with national appeal. She is mainly known as the poetess of Vatsalya, Mamta, soft sense of humanity. Still, she did not remain untouched even by the hot flame of the lamp of freedom. Patriotism, the influence of Gandhi, desire for independence are clearly reflected in his poems written between 1929-1939.

- Astrophysicist Jayant Narlikar:- On this day in the year 1938, Indian astrophysicist Jayant Narlikar was born in Kolhapur (Maharashtra). His father Vishnu Vasudev Narlikar was a mathematics teacher at Banaras Hindu University and his mother was a scholar of Sanskrit. Narlikar’s early education took place in Varanasi. After graduating from Banaras Hindu University, he went to Cambridge University. He took a degree in mathematics from Cambridge and gained expertise in astronomy and astrophysics. Narlikar returned to India in the 1970s and started working at the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research. In the year 1988, the University Grants Commission entrusted him with the task of setting up an Inter-University Center for Astronomy and Astrophysics.
