- स्कॉटिश चर्च कॉलेज:- आज ही के दिन वर्ष 1803 में राजा राम मोहन राय, और अलैकजेंडर ने पांच छात्रों के साथ स्कॉटिश चर्च कॉलेज शुरू किया था. कोलकाता के सबसे पुराने ईसाई मिशनरियों में से एक है, इसलिए यह अपने बुनियादी ढांचे में ही एक विरासत रखता है. हालाँकि इसमें सुदृढ़ शिक्षा के लिए आवश्यक सभी आधुनिक सुविधाएं मौजूद हैं. स्कॉटिश चर्च कॉलेज की एक उल्लेखनीय उपलब्धि व्यवस्थित स्नातक सह-शिक्षा की शुरूआत थी. हालाँकि कलकत्ता में एक या दो पुरुष कॉलेजों में छात्राओं को प्रवेश दिया जाता था, लेकिन स्कॉटिश चर्च कॉलेज ने एक निश्चित नीति के रूप में सह-शिक्षा को अपनाया था.
- ब्रिटिश सामानों की होली जलाने:- आज ही के दिन वर्ष 1905 में कलकत्ता के साप्ताहिक समाचार पत्र ‘संजीवनी’ ने ब्रिटिश सामानों के बहिष्कार का सर्वप्रथम सुझाव दिया था. बताते चलें कि, कृष्ण कुमार मित्र ने बंगाल विभाजन के प्रस्ताव के विरोध में अपनी बांग्ला पत्रिका संजीवनी के लेख में सर्वप्रथम सुझाव दिया था, कि भारतीय जनता द्वारा ब्रिटिश वस्तुओं का बहिष्कार करना चाहिए तथा सरकारी अधिकारियों एवं सरकारी संस्थाओं से सभी सम्बंध तोड़ लेने चाहिए.
- उर्दू भाषा की पत्रिका:- आज ही के दिन वर्ष 1912 में मौलाना अबुल कलाम आज़ाद ने उर्दू भाषा की पत्रिका अल हिलाल का प्रकाशन शुरू किया था. इस समाचार पत्र ने भारतीय स्वतंत्रता आंदोलन के कारणों का भी समर्थन किया साथ ही भारतीय मुसलमानों को आंदोलन में शामिल होने के लिए प्रोत्साहित भी किया.
- उद्योगपति तुलसी प्रसाद खेतान:- आज ही के दिन वर्ष 1913 में उद्योगपति तुलसी प्रसाद खेतान का जन्म हुआ था.
- भूख हड़ताल:- आज ही के दिन वर्ष 1929 में जतिन्द्र नाथ दास ने ऐतिहासिक भूख हड़ताल की शुरुआत की थी. लाहौर जेल में, दास ने यूरोप के लोगों के साथ भारतीय राजनीतिक कैदियों के लिए समानता की मांग करते हुए अन्य क्रांतिकारी सेनानियों के साथ भूख हड़ताल प्रारंभ किया था.
- अभिनेत्री बीना राय:- आज ही के दिन वर्ष 1932 में अभिनेत्री बीना राय का जन्म लखनऊ, उत्तर प्रदेश में हुआ था. उनका वास्तविक नाम ‘कृष्णा सरीन’ था. पचास के दशक की बेहतरीन अभिनेत्रियों में से वह एक थीं. उन्होंने वर्ष 1951 में प्रदर्शित फ़िल्म ‘काली घटा’ से अपना फ़िल्मी कैरियर शुरू किया था. अभिनेत्री बीना राय। 18 बरस के अपने कैरियर में बीना राय ने सिर्फ़ अट्ठाईस फ़िल्मों में काम किया और फिर वक़्त के बदलते रुख को भांपकर शालीनता के साथ फ़िल्मोद्योग से किनारा कर लिया था. बताते चलें कि ,बीना राय ने शादी के बाद भी फ़िल्मों में काम करना जारी रखा। शादीशुदा अभिनेत्री के कैरियर को लेकर उस ज़माने में भी तमाम तरह की आशंकायें जतायी जाती थीं। लेकिन बीना राय के मामले में ऐसी तमाम आशंकायें झूठी साबित हुईं, क्योंकि सही मायनों में उनके कैरियर ने गति शादी के बाद ही पकड़ी थी.
- राजनीतिज्ञ भीष्म नारायण सिंह:- आज ही के दिन वर्ष 1933 में असम और मेघालय के राज्यपाल भीष्म नारायण सिंह का जन्म पलामू जनपद के उदयगढ़ गांव में एक किसान परिवार में पैदा हुआ था. उनकी शिक्षा काशी हिन्दू विश्वविद्यालय से हुई थी. वर्ष 1967 में भीष्म नारायण सिंह पहली बार बिहार विधानसभा के सदस्य चुने गए थे. वर्ष 1984 में उन्हें असम और मेघालय का राज्यपाल बनाया गया। बाद में वह सिक्किम, अरुणाचल प्रदेश और तमिलनाडु के राज्यपाल भी रहे.
- निर्माता प्रकाश मेहरा:- आज ही के दिन वर्ष 1939 में निर्माता प्रकाश मेहरा का जन्म उत्तरप्रदेश के बिजनौर में हुआ था. मेहरा ने 50 के दशक में अपने फ़िल्मी जीवन की शुरूआत एक प्रोडक्शन कंट्रोलर की हैसियत से की थी. वर्ष 1968 में उन्होंने शशि कपूर की फ़िल्म हसीना मान जायेगी का निर्देशन किया जिसमें शशि कपूर ने दोहरी भूमिका निभाई थी. मेहरा ने फिल्म जंजीर का निर्माण और निर्देशन किया और यह फ़िल्म जबरदस्त हिट रही. जिसके बाद अमिताभ के डवांडोल कैरियर को पटरी पर ला दिया. इस फ़िल्म से अमिताभ के साथ प्रकाश मेहरा का रिश्ता गहरा हो गया और दोनों ने लगातार सात सुपरहिट फ़िल्में दी थी.
- आठवीं लोकसभा की सदस्य टी. कल्पना देवी:- आज ही के दिन वर्ष 1941 में आठवीं लोकसभा की सदस्य टी. कल्पना देवी का जन्म भाटलापेनुमरु आंध्र प्रदेश में हुआ था.
- उपन्यासकार सुनीता जैन :- आज ही के दिन वर्ष 1941 में हिन्दी और अंग्रेज़ी की आधुनिक कहानीकार और उपन्यासकार सुनीता जैन का जन्म अम्बाला, पंजाब में हुआ था. सुनीता हिन्दी और अंग्रेज़ी की आधुनिक कहानीकार और उपन्यासकार थीं. उन्होंने ‘स्टेट यूनिवर्सिटी ऑफ़ न्यूयार्क’ से अंग्रेज़ी साहित्य में एम. ए. किया. इसके बाद उन्होंने ‘यूनिवर्सिटी ऑफ़ नेब्रास्का’ से पीएच. डी. की उपाधि प्राप्त की. सुनीता जैन हिन्दी और अंग्रेज़ी दोनों ही भाषाओं में लेखन कार्य करती हैं. उनकी अब तक 70 से भी अधिक पुस्तकें प्रकाशित हो चुकी हैं. 8वें ‘विश्व हिन्दी सम्मेलन न्यूयॉर्क, वर्ष 2007 में ‘विश्व हिन्दी सम्मान’ से सम्मानित हिन्दी की पहली कवयित्री सुनीता जैन थी.
- ‘इंडियन इंडिपेंडेंस एक्ट’:- आज ही के दिन वर्ष 1941 में ‘इंडियन इंडिपेंडेंस एक्ट’ ब्रिटिश पार्लियामेंट में पारित हुआ था. आज से करीब 68 वर्ष पूर्व एक अद्भुत तोहफा ब्रिटिश संसद द्वारा भारत को दिया गया था. ज्ञात है की, तत्कालीन वायसराय लॉर्ड माउंट बेटन की योजना पर आधारित यह विधेयक 4 जुलाई, 1947 को ब्रिटिश संसद में पेश किया गया और 18 जुलाई, 1947 को शाही आदेश मिलने पर इस विधेयक को अधिनियम बना दिया.
- इंग्लैंड के खिलाफ खेला:- आज ही के दिन वर्ष 1974 में हेडिंग्ले में भारत ने अपना पहला वनडे मैच इंग्लैंड के खिलाफ खेला था.
- लोक सम्मान वापस लिये गये:- आज ही के दिन वर्ष 1977 में आपातकाल के दौरान भारत रत्न, पद्म विभूषण आदि जैसे लोक सम्मान वापस लिये गये थे.
- अभिनेत्री उर्वशी शर्मा:- आज ही के दिन वर्ष 1984 में अभिनेत्री उर्वशी शर्मा का जन्म दिल्ली में हुआ था. उर्वशी ने अपने कैरियर की शुरुआत वर्ष 2004 में आपके लिए हम से रखा. उन्होंने बॉबी देओल, अक्षय खन्ना अभिनीत फिल्म नकाब से बॉलीवुड में डेब्यू किया था। नकाब फिल्म के लिए वे फिल्मफेयर पुरस्कार में बेस्ट फिमेल एक्ट्रेस डेब्यू के लिए नॉमिनेट भी हुई थी. वर्ष 2009 में प्रदर्शित बाबर फिल्म में वे अभिनेता सोहम शाह के साथ लीड भूमिका में दिखाई दी थी. उनकी अंतिम फिल्म वर्ष 2012 में चक्रधर थी. उर्वशी वर्ष 2008 में टीवी रियलिटी शो फीयर फैक्टर: खतरों के खिलाड़ी के खिलाड़ी में भी दिखाई दी थी.
- उपन्यासकार आशापूर्णा देवी:- आज ही के दिन वर्ष 1995 में उपन्यासकार आशापूर्णा देवी का निधन हुआ था.
- ए.टी.पी. ख़िताब जीता:- आज ही के दिन वर्ष 1995 में भारत के लिएंडर पेस ने हॉल आफ़ फ़ेम टेनिस चैंपियनशिप में अपने जीवन का प्रथम ए.टी.पी. ख़िताब जीता था.
- मज़बूत संबंधों की इच्छा जताई:- आज ही के दिन वर्ष 2004 में रूसी राष्ट्रपति पुतिन ने साइबेरिया और देश के सुदूर पूर्ववर्ती इलाकों के विकास के लिए भारत से और मज़बूत संबंधों की इच्छा जताई थी.
- तिहरे बम धमाकों से दहल उठी:- आज ही के दिन वर्ष 2011 में देश की आर्थिक राजधानी मुंबई तिहरे बम धमाकों से दहल उठी थी. ये धमाके मुंबई के झवेरी बाजार, ओपेरा हाउस और दादर में हुए थे. जिसमें मरने वालों की कुल संख्या 20 से अधिक और घायलों की संख्या 130 थी.
