In the year 1803, Dalton told that every substance is made up of small particles, which are called atoms. Dalton said at that time that the atom cannot be divided by any physical or chemical method, but later on, the atom was also divided and the dividing particles were called the fundamental particles of matter.

Fundamental Particles:- Fundamental particles in physics are those particles, which are not composed of any other particles and which cannot be divided. Let us tell you that, before the year 1932, only electrons and protons were considered basic particles. In the year 1932 AD, when a chargeless particle called neutron was discovered by Chadwick, then its number became three. After this, the number of basic particles increased rapidly and till the present time, the number of basic particles has reached above 30.

Electron: – was discovered by J.J. Thomson in the year 1897 AD. He is also called the father of modern physics. Electron is a negatively charged fundamental particle and revolves around the nucleus of the atom in orbits with different energy levels. There is a negative charge of 1.6 × 10-19 on it. Its mass is 9.1 × 10–31 kg. It is a stable fundamental particle.

Proton: – was discovered by Goldstein in the year 1896 AD. It is a positive fundamental particle, which resides in the nucleus of the atom. It is a permanent fundamental particle. It has a 1.6 × 10-19 Coulomb positive charge. Their mass is 1.67 × 10-27 kg.

Neutron: – was discovered by Chadwick in the year 1932. It is a chargeless fundamental particle, which resides in the nucleus of an atom. Its mass is equal to the mass of a proton. It is a temporary fundamental particle. Neutrons are used in biology and medicine. Being free of charge, it is used in nuclear fission.

Positron: – was discovered by Anderson in the year 1932 AD. It is a positively charged fundamental particle, whose mass and charge are equal to that of an electron. That is why it is also called the Anti-Particle of Electron.

Neutrino: – was discovered by Pauli in the year 1930 AD. These are fundamental particles without mass and charge. These are of two types, neutrino, and antineutrino. Their rotation is opposite to each other.

Pi-meson: – was discovered by H. Yukawa in the year 1935. It is of two types – positive pi meson and negative pi meson. It is a temporary fundamental particle. Its lifetime is 10-8 to 0. Its mass is 274 times that of an electron.

Photon: – It is a packet of energy, which moves with the speed of light. All electromagnetic rays are created from fundamental particles. Their rest mass is zero.
