नवरात्रा के छठे दिन माँ कात्यायनी की अराधना की जाती है. माँ का नाम कात्यायनी क्यों पड़ा इसके पीछे एक रोचक कथा है. एक समय कत नामक एक ऋषि थे, उनके पुत्र कात्य हुए. कात्य के नाम से प्रसिद्ध कात्य गोत्र से विश्वप्रसिद्ध ऋषि कात्यायन उत्पन्न हुए. उन्होंने माँ भगवती की कठिन तपस्या की, और उनकी इच्छा थीं कि, माँ भगवती उनके घर पुत्री के रूप में जन्म ले… और माता ने भी उनकी यह प्रार्थना स्वीकार की. मान्यता यह है कि, अविवाहित कन्याएं अगर मां कात्यायनी देवी की पूजा करती हैं, तो उनके विवाह का योग जल्दी बनता है और योग्य वर की भी प्राप्ति होती है. माता का पूरा शरीर सोने के समान चमकीला हैं और उनकी सवारी सिंह हैं. माता की चार भुजाएं हैं, माता अपने दाए तरफ की ऊपर वाला हाथ अभयमुद्रा धारण किये हुए हैं, तथा माता के नीचे वाले हाथ में वरमुद्रा धारण किए हुए है, तथा माता के बाए तरफ उन्होंने अपने एक हाथ से कमल का पुष्प पकड़ा है और अपने दूसरे हाथ में तलवार धारण की हुई हैं.
श्रीमदभागवत महापुराण के अनुसार, ब्रज की गोपियों ने भगवान कृष्ण को पति के रूप में पाने के लिए यमुना के तट पर मां कात्यायनी की आराधना की थी. इसलिए मां कात्यायनी ब्रजमंडल की अधिष्ठात्री देवी के रूप में भी जानी जाती है. मां कात्यायनी की आराधना करने से शत्रु पराजीत होते हैं चुकिं माँ कात्यायनी को शत्रुहंता भी कहा जाता है. इस दिन साधक का मन ‘आज्ञा’ चक्र में स्थित होता है, चुकिं योगसाधना में आज्ञा चक्र का विशेष महत्व होता है. अगर किसी साधक का आज्ञा चक्र सक्रिय हो जाय तो, उसकी आज्ञा को कोई भी जीव नकार नहीं सकता है. माता कात्यायनी की आराधना करने से साधकों को अर्थ, धर्म, काम और मोक्ष चारों फलों की प्राप्ति हो जाती है. मनुष्य के रोग, शोक, संताप और भय नष्ट हो जाते हैं. माता कात्यायनी की आरधना करने से परम पद की भी प्राप्ति होती है.
भोग: –
माता कात्याayani को शहद बहुत ही प्रिय है, इसलिए नवरात्री के छठे दिन माता को शहद का भोग लगाया जाता है.
मन्त्र: –
‘या देवी सर्वभूतेषु शक्ति रूपेण संस्थिता।
नमस्तस्यै नमस्तस्यै नमस्तस्यै नमो नमः॥
पूजा के नियम: –
माता कात्यायनी उपासना करते समय पीले या लाल रंग के वस्त्र पहने और माँ को लाल-पीले व नील फूलों से चंदन, शक़्कर, दही, अक्षत, फल, पंचमेवे और पंचामृत अर्पित करें. माता के समक्ष शुद्ध घी का दीपक जलाएं तथा धूप अगरबत्ती जलाएं.

On the sixth day of Navaratri, Ma Katyayani is worshipped. There is an interesting legend behind why the Ma came to be named Katyayani. Once upon a time, there was a sage named Kata; his son was named Katya. From the Katya lineage—renowned after his name—emerged the world-famous sage Katyayana. He performed rigorous penance to please Ma Bhagavati, harboring a deep desire that she should be born in his home as his daughter… and the Ma graciously accepted his prayer. It is believed that if unmarried maidens worship Goddess Katyayani, the prospects for their marriage arise swiftly, and they are blessed with a worthy groom. The Mother’s entire body radiates a brilliance akin to gold, and her mount is a lion. The Ma possesses four arms: Her upper right hand is held in the Abhaya Mudra (the gesture of fearlessness), while Her lower right hand is held in the Vara Mudra (the gesture of granting boons); on Her left side, one hand holds a lotus flower, and the other wields a sword.
According to the Srimad Bhagavata Mahapurana, the Gopis (cowherd maidens) of Braj worshipped Ma Katyayani on the banks of the River Yamuna with the desire to attain Lord Krishna as their husband. Consequently, Ma Katyayani is also revered as the presiding deity (Adhishthatri Devi) of the Braj region. Worshipping Ma Katyayani leads to the defeat of enemies, as she is also known by the epithet Shatruhanta (the Slayer of Enemies). On this day, the mind of the spiritual aspirant (sadhak) becomes centered in the Aagya Chakra, a spiritual energy center that holds immense significance in the practice of Yoga. If an aspirant’s Aagya Chakra becomes fully activated, no living being can ever disregard or disobey their command. By worshipping Ma Katyayani, devotees are blessed with the attainment of all four ultimate goals of human life: Artha (material prosperity), Dharma (righteousness), Kama (fulfillment of desires), and Moksha (liberation). A person’s diseases, sorrows, afflictions, and fears are dispelled. By worshipping Ma Katyayani, one also attains the supreme spiritual state.
Offerings (Bhog): –
Honey is extremely dear to Ma Katyayani; therefore, on the sixth day of Navratri, honey is offered to the Mother as Bhog.

Worship Rituals: –
While worshipping Ma Katyayani, one should wear yellow or red attire and offer Ma red, yellow, and blue flowers, along with sandalwood paste, sugar, yogurt, unbroken rice (Akshat), fruits, five types of dry fruits (Panchmeva), and Panchamrit. Light a lamp filled with pure clarified butter (Ghee) before the Ma, and also light incense sticks.
