‘लक्ष्मण-रेखा’ इतिहास साक्षी है कि जब जब मनुष्य ने इस लक्ष्मण रेखा की मर्यादा का उल्लंघन किया है, अनर्थ घटा है. वह चाहे राष्ट के संबंध में हो चाहे समाज, राजनीति, पर्यावरण के संदर्भ में. इसी अवधारणा पर और विशेषकर पर्यावरण पर केंद्रित भगवतीशरण मिश्र रचित यह उपन्यास है. विवाह पूर्व साथी से शारीरिक स्पर्श को भी प्रदूषण बताते हुए सटीक तर्क़ दिए गए है. पूरे उपन्यास में दो प्रेमियों की भावनाओं के उहापोह के साथ पर्यावरण महत्ता को प्रतिपादित कर सुखद अंत उकेरा गया है.
देखिए, मनुष्य को वनों-पर्वतों से एक स्वाभाविक प्रेम होता है,आकर्षण. इसीलिए सभी व्यक्ति वनों को देखकर उनमें प्रवेश कर प्रफुल्लित हो जाते हैं. लोग अपने घरों के सामने के लॉनों में, प्रांगण में यहाँ तक कि छत के गमलों में भी पौधे लगाते हैं. इसके मूल में उनके मन में कहीं अंदर बैठा वृक्षों-वनों के प्रति प्रेम ही है, और उसका अत्यंत तर्कसंगत कारण है. कोई भी जीव जहाँ पैदा होता है, वहीं भागने को तत्पर रहता है. पेड़ों पर पैदा होने वाले पक्षी पिंजड़ा खुलते ही पेड़ों की शाखाओं पर जा बैठते हैं, बंदर को कितना भी बाँधकर रखिए, पालिए-पोसिए, बंधन-मुक्त होते ही वह किसी तरु-शाखा पर जा बैठेगा.
मछली, मगरमच्छ, कच्छप एवं अन्य जलजीवों को जल के किनारे लाइए तो वे, अवसर मिलते ही पुनः जल में प्रवेश कर जाएँगे. मनुष्य वन में ही पैदा हुआ, वृक्षों के नीचे पला-बढ़ा. आरंभिक अवस्था में वन्य जीवों के मध्य ही सह-अस्तित्व की भावना से रहता-बढ़ता रहा. यह पृथक् बात है कि इनमें से कुछ खूँखार जानवरों से वह भयभीत भी रहा और कुछ कमजोर जीवों का आखेट कर अपनी उदर-पूर्ति भी करता रहा, पर उसका मूल प्रदेश वन ही रहा. सभ्यता के क्रमिक विकास से वह वनों के बाहर अवश्य आ गया पर वन, पौधे और वृक्ष अब भी उसको अपनी ओर दृढ़ता से खींचते हैं. वनों से उसका प्रेम स्वाभाविक और अकृत्रिम है. ये तो चंद स्वार्थी, अर्थलोलुप लोग हैं जो वनों के विनाश पर तुले हैं. मानव-जाति मूलतः वन-प्रेमी और प्रकृति प्रेमी है.

Whether it is in relation to the nation or in the context of society, politics, environment. This novel written by Bhagwati Sharan Mishra is focused on this concept and especially on the environment. Accurate arguments have been given stating that even physical touch with the pre-marital partner is pollution. In the entire novel, a happy ending has been engraved by rendering the importance of the environment with the excitement of the feelings of two lovers.
See, man has a natural love for forests and mountains, attraction. That’s why all people get elated after seeing the forests and entering them. People plant plants in the lawns in front of their houses, in the courtyard, and even in the roof pots. Its root is love for trees and forests sitting somewhere inside their mind, and there is a very logical reason for it. Wherever any living being is born, it remains ready to run away. Birds born on trees sit on the branches of trees as soon as the cage is opened, no matter how much you keep the monkey tied, bring it up, as soon as it is free from bondage, it will sit on a tree branch.
If you bring fish, crocodiles, turtles, and other water creatures to the water’s edge, they will enter the water again as soon as they get an opportunity. The man was born in the forest and grew up under the trees. In the initial stage, it lived and grew with the feeling of co-existence among the wild animals. It is a different matter that he was afraid of some of these ferocious animals and also kept hunting some weak creatures to feed himself, but his original state remained forest. With the gradual development of civilization, he has definitely come out of the forests, but the forests, plants, and trees still strongly pull him towards them. His love for forests is natural and artificial. These are a few selfish, greedy people who are hell-bent on the destruction of forests. The human race is basically a forest lover and nature lover.
